Effects of age and naloxone on testicular function were studied in golden hamsters exposed to short photoperiods. Subjection of hamsters to short photoperiods of 6 h light: 18 h darkness for 6 weeks led to testicular regression in young adult (5-6 months) or middle-aged (11-12 months) golden hamsters but not in prepubertal hamsters of 1-2 months of age. The middle-aged hamsters had decreased testis width by week 4 of treatment and the young hamsters by week 5. Daily injection of naloxone at the time of 'lights on' partially prevented testicular regression in young and middle-aged hamsters but …

This study evaluated the response of milk production and endocrine profile to a switch from short-day photoperiod (SDPP) with natural light to long-day photoperiod (LDPP) with white light-emitting diode (WLED) or induction lighting (IL) in lactating dairy cows. Nine Holstein cows (198 ± 10.0 days in milk) were initially exposed to SDPP of 10:14 h light-dark cycle (10L:14D) with natural light (SDPP period), followed by a long-day photoperiod (LDPP; 16L:8D) using either WLED (443 nm peak, LDPP-W, n = 5) or IL (IL; 529 nm peak, LDPP-I, n = 4). Each period comprised a 1-week adaptation and a 2-wee…

Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) is an important crop whose productivity is severely constrained by salinity. Here, we identify the photoperiod regulator E1 family as negative regulators of soybean salt tolerance. Under salt stress, the e1 e1la e1lb triple mutant (e1-3m) show higher antioxidant enzyme activities and proline accumulation, together with reduced hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde levels, whereas E1 overexpression increases salt sensitivity. Integrated RNA-seq and ChIP-seq analyses identify GmCIPK25, a positive regulator of salt tolerance, as a direct target of E1. E1, E1La, an…

Perinatal exposure to different photoperiods can lead to differences in behaviour and sleep during adulthood. Information about acute photoperiod is first processed in the brain through the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the primary brain nuclei responsible for circadian rhythms. In these nuclei, the photoperiodic information is coded and related to the excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance of GABA. We investigated in mice, whether behavioural effects of perinatal photoperiod (PNP) in adulthood are represented in a difference in the E/I balance in SCN cells. We exposed males and females to a shor…

BACKGROUND: The photo period has a great effect on the testicular efficiency of Rams, as it differs between breeding in comparison to, Non- Breeding periods. The male hormone also shows great variation according to the photo period.
AIM: This study aimed to examine the seasonal variation in ram fertility (ultrasonographic, hormonal, histopathological).
METHODS: Throughout the breeding and non-breeding seasons, blood samples were collected weekly from the animals' jugular veins. On the same day as the measurement, 10 ml of blood from each animal was collected in Vacutainer tubes, and testoste

We evaluated the influence of light sources and photoperiod on blood physiological variables in four trials. In each trial, 720 1-d-old Ross × Ross 708 chicks were randomly distributed into 12 environmentally controlled rooms (30 males/30 females/room). The experimental design was a 4 × 3 factorial treatments consisting of four light sources [incandescent (ICD, standard), compact fluorescent, neutral light emitting diode, and cool poultry-specific-filtered LED] and three photoperiods [long/continuous (23L:1D), regular/intermittent (2L:2D), and short/non-intermittent (8L:16D)] from d8-d56 at 50…

This study describes the diel rhythms in several indoleamines, melatonin, and related 5-methoxyindoles in the pineal organ of rainbow trout in vivo. In addition, the effect of different photoperiod conditions was evaluated. Melatonin levels displayed clear daily rhythms in the pineal organ of rainbow trout kept experimentally under long (LD 16:08), neutral (LD 12:12), and short (LD 08:16) photoperiods. Duration of melatonin signal was dependent on the night length of prevailing photoperiod, while peak amplitude was higher when lengthening the photoperiod. Significant daily rhythms in 5-HT cont…

Seasonal changes in day length enhance or suppress immune function in individuals of several mammalian species. Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) are long-day breeders that adjust reproductive physiology and behavior, body mass, and immune function following exposure to short photoperiods. Photoperiods of intermediate-duration, encountered in nature by juvenile hamsters born in early-spring and by those born in mid-summer, trigger gonadal development in the former cohort and inhibit the onset of puberty in the latter. Divergent reproductive responses to the same intermediate photoperiod de…

Avian song is a sexually dimorphic behavior which is regulated seasonally. This regulation involves the construction and growth of song cont … ent only in males. Binding in MAN was present in both sexes. Although the effects of short and long photoperiods on male house sparrow IMEL binding in song structures revealed no systematic changes, there were significant differences in binding under different photoperiods in HVC and RA. The concept of critical day length is well established among rodents; reproductive function is maintained when day lengths are greater than some specific threshold. In addition to day length cues, seasonal breeding in deer mice can also be regulated by food availability. The caloric threshold necessary to support reproduction remains unspecified for seasonally breeding rodents. The present study examined the interaction between photoperiod and food availability on reproductive function in adult male deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). A critical caloric intake profile was constructed in long (…

Effects of short-day photoperiod, pinealectomy, and melatonin on sexual maturation were tested in Peromyscus leucopus from either Connecticut (CT) or Georgia (GA). Laboratory reared-stocks from CT and GA were exposed to short daylength (photoperiod) from birth or 25 days of age. At 12 wk of age, delay in sexual maturation was indicated in most CT mice by decreased testis length, combined testes weight, and seminal vesicle weight. Conversely, GA animals did not delay sexual maturation when exposed to short-day photoperiod from either birth or 25 days of age. These results indicate that response…

Photoperiod serves as a critical environmental signal that orchestrates seasonal reproduction in mammals, influencing not only sperm production but also sperm activity. Nevertheless, the molecular basis of this photoperiodic regulation of sperm activity during development remains poorly understood. Here, we show that short photoperiod (8L:16D) exposure during jucenile stage significantly impairs sperm motility in Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), reducing motile sperm percentage, progressive motility, and straight-line velocity, without altering gross sperm morphology. Quantitative prote…

Natural selection favours individuals able to physiologically adjust to seasonal environmental cues, such as photoperiod, and time their reproduction accordingly. Although it is known that differences along the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis can explain differences in reproductive timing across the dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) range, it remains unknown whether these differences arise from local adaptation or early-life environmental effects. We exposed nestlings from a single population to photoperiods mimicking development at the northern and southern extents of the species' br…

Photoperiodic sensitivity is an essential factor that may affect agricultural practices under current climate scenarios. This study used pea (Pisum sativum) to examine effects of varying photoperiods on growth and photosynthetic parameters and then reveal the mechanistic basis of this process by linking them with tissue-specific distribution of auxin and regulation of related genes. This was achieved by transcriptome sequencing, genome-wide gene family identification, and expression pattern analysis. Best results in terms of growth and yield were obtained with a 20 h/4 h light/dark photoperiod…

Brown algae contain phlorotannins with recognized biological and ecological functions, but the responses of phenolic metabolism to different light environments remain incompletely understood. In this study, Sargassum muticum was cultivated for 15 days under different photoperiods (12L:12D, 16L:8D, and 20L:4D) and light qualities (white, blue, and red light). Growth, photosynthetic performance, oxidative stress indicators, and phlorotannin content were examined, together with transcriptomic and untargeted metabolomic responses. Extended photoperiods were associated with increased growth and a t…

Circadian and seasonal variations produce variations in physiological processes throughout the day and the year, respectively. In this sense, both the light and the moment of feeding are strong modulators of the central and peripheral clocks. However, little is known about its influence on certain metabolic parameters and on the composition of liver and muscle fatty acids (FA). In the present study, 24 Fischer 344 rats were exposed for 11 weeks to different photoperiods, L6, L12 and L18, with 6, 12 and 18 h of light/day, respectively. They were fed a standard diet. Serum metabolic parameters, …

Changes in photoperiod length are transduced into neuroendocrine signals by melatonin (MEL) secreted by the pineal gland triggering seasonally adaptive responses in many animal species. Siberian hamsters, transferred from a long-day 'summer-like' photoperiod (LD) to a short-day 'winter-like' photoperiod (SD), exhibit a naturally-occurring reversal in obesity. Photoperiod-induced changes in adiposity are mediated by the duration of MEL secretion and can be mimicked by exogenously administered MEL into animals housed in LD. Evidence suggests that MEL increases the sympathetic nervous system (SNS…

Cognitive impairments are observed when learned associations are being acquired or retrieved during a period of circadian disruption. However, the extent of the functional impacts on previously acquired associations following circadian rhythm re-entrainment is unknown. The impacts of repeated photoperiod shifts on learning and memory in male and female rats were examined. For these experiments, rats were trained on a spatial version of the Morris water task (MWT) and a visual discrimination task designed for the 8-arm radial maze. Following asymptotic performance on these tasks, rats experienc…

Adult mammalian brains are capable of some structural plasticity. Although the basic cellular mechanisms underlying learning and memory are being revealed, extrinsic factors contributing to this plasticity remain unspecified. White-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) are particularly well suited to investigate brain plasticity because they show marked seasonal changes in structure and function of the hippocampus induced by a distinct environmental signal, viz., photoperiod (i.e. the number of hours of light/day). Compared to animals maintained in 16 h of light/day, exposure to 8 h of light/day f…
