Neural correlates of absolute pitch differ between blind and sighted musicians.

Several reports have indicated a higher incidence of absolute pitch in blind than in sighted musicians. Employing a pitch memory task, we examined whether a blind absolute pitch musician would rely on different neural correlates than a group of sighted absolute pitch musicians. The blind musician showed significantly more activation of bihemispheric visual association areas, lingual gyrus, parietal and frontal areas than the sighted musicians. Sighted musicians showed more activation of the right primary auditory cortex and the cerebellum when compared with the blind musician. These difference

Auditory perceptual and visual-spatial characteristics of gaze-evoked tinnitus.

Auditory perceptual and visual-spatial characteristics of subjective tinnitus evoked by eye gaze were studied in two adult human subjects. This uncommon form of tinnitus occurred approximately 4-6 weeks following neurosurgery for gross total excision of space-occupying lesions of the cerebellopontine angle and hearing was lost in the operated ear. In both cases, the gaze-evoked tinnitus was characterized as being tonal in nature, with pitch and loudness percepts remaining constant as long as the same horizontal or vertical eye directions were maintained. Tinnitus was absent when the eyes were

The perception of body verticality (subjective postural vertical) in peripheral and central vestibular disorders.

The perception of body verticality (subjective postural vertical, SPV) was assessed in normal subjects and in patients with peripheral and central vestibular lesions and the data were compared with conventional neuro-otological assessments. Subjects were seated with eyes closed in a motorized gimbal which executed cycles of tilt at low constant speed (1.5 degrees s-1), both in the frontal (roll) and sagittal (pitch) planes. Subjects indicated with a joystick when they entered and left verticality, thus defining a sector of subjective uprightness in each plane. The mean angle of tilt (identifyi

The Accompanying Effect in Speech: How Pitch, Loudness, and Formants Coadjust to Simultaneous Perturbations.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to further investigate the accompanying effect in speech motor control by examining how pitch, loudness, and formants (first formant [F1]) coadjust at the trial level when auditory feedback is simultaneously perturbed in any two of three acoustic dimensions. Additionally, the study also assessed whether shift direction predictability modulates these cross-dimensional responses. METHOD: Forty-six native Mandarin speakers produced the sustained vowel /ɛ/ for 3 s while auditory feedback was shifted either unpredictably or predictably in single-shift conditions (pitch on

Effects of peak pressure and energy of impulses.

Peak pressure has been one of the key parameters of impulse noise used to assess the hazard to hearing. It is used in most international noise exposure limits. France uses an A-weighted energy limit. There is a rough correspondence between peak pressure and the hazard to hearing for a given type of impulse noise. However, when the effects of different types of impulses are compared, this correspondence breaks down. One of the alternate measures of impulse intensity is weighted energy. Weighted energy is appealing for a number of reasons. It does not depend on details of the pressure-time histo

Cochlear nonlinearities inferred from two-tone distortion products in the ear canal of the alligator lizard.

Distortion products ( DPs ) evoked by two-tone stimuli at frequencies F1 and F2 were measured in the ear-canal sound pressure of the alligator lizard. The largest sound pressures measured, other than those at F1 and F2, where at the cubic difference frequencies 2F1-F2 and 2F2-F1. All cubic DPs were greatly reduced by destruction of the basilar membrane, which suggests that its nonlinear properties are the source of the DPs . Measurements following acoustic overstimulation show a complex relationship between the magnitude of DPs and cochlear state, as assessed by measurements of cochlear potent

Implicit auditory sensory memory and short-term memory for musical and verbal stimuli in children with cochlear implants.

The spectrally degraded signal delivered by cochlear implants (CIs) has been suggested to constrain the encoding and temporary retention of sequential auditory information. However, research on short-term memory (STM) in children with CIs has predominantly focused on the verbal domain, with musical STM and implicit auditory sensory memory receiving comparatively limited attention. This study investigated the domain-specific nature of auditory STM in children with CIs relative to typically hearing (TH) peers, alongside implicit auditory sensory memory and music perception. Seventy-five children

Reduced Learning of Sound Categories in Dyslexia Is Associated with Reduced Regularity-Induced Auditory Cortex Adaptation.

A main characteristic of dyslexia is poor use of sound categories. We now studied within-session learning of new sound categories in dyslexia, behaviorally and neurally, using fMRI. Human participants (males and females) with and without dyslexia were asked to discriminate which of two serially-presented tones had a higher pitch. The task was administered in two protocols, with and without a repeated reference frequency. The reference condition introduces regularity, and enhances frequency sensitivity in typically developing (TD) individuals. Enhanced sensitivity facilitates the formation of "

Common parietal activation in musical mental transformations across pitch and time.

We previously observed that mental manipulation of the pitch level or temporal organization of melodies results in functional activation in the human intraparietal sulcus (IPS), a region also associated with visuospatial transformation and numerical calculation. Two outstanding questions about these musical transformations are whether pitch and time depend on separate or common processing in IPS, and whether IPS recruitment in melodic tasks varies depending upon the degree of transformation required (as it does in mental rotation). In the present study we sought to answer these questions by ap

Instrumental and perceptual evaluations of two related singers.

The primary goal of this study was to characterize a performer's singing and speaking voice. One woman was not admitted to a premier choral group, but her sister, who was comparable in physical characteristics and background, was admitted and provided a valuable control subject. The perceptual judgment of a vocal coach who conducted the group's auditions was decisive in discriminating these 2 singers. The singer not admitted to the group described a history of voice pathology, lacked a functional head register, and spoke with a voice characterized by hoarseness. Multiple listener judgments and

Intense sounds may alter the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition.

Morphological and structural changes have been observed in various cochlear elements following exposure to intense sounds. Whether these changes are sufficient to locally alter the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition is unknown. Here a psychophysical test for mechanical changes in the partition is developed and applied. Monaural exposures to an intense 1700-Hz tone were preceded and followed by a binaural task in which the subject adjusted the interaural time difference of a 250-Hz tone in order to perceive it as centered inside his head. If the local gradients of mass, stiffness,

The perception threshold of the vestibular Coriolis illusion.

BACKGROUND: The vestibular Coriolis illusion is a disorienting sensation that results from a transient head rotation about one axis during sustained body rotation about another axis. Although often used in spatial disorientation training for pilots and laboratory studies on motion sickness, little is known about the minimum required rotation rate to produce the illusion. OBJECTIVE: This study determined the perception threshold associated with the Coriolis illusion. METHODS: Nineteen participants performed a standardized pitching head movement during continuous whole-body yaw rotation at rat

Gender differentiates effects of acoustic stimulation in patients with tinnitus.

Gender constitutes a major factor to consider when tailoring subtype-based therapies for tinnitus. Previous reports showed important differences between men and women concerning basic perceptual tinnitus characteristics (i.e., laterality, frequency, tinnitus loudness) as well as psychological reactions linked to this condition. Therapeutic approaches based on acoustic stimulation involve processes beyond a pure masking effect and consist of sound presentation temporarily altering or alleviating tinnitus perception via residual and/or lateral inhibition mechanisms. Presented stimuli may include

Vocal emotion recognition in Parkinson's disease: Beyond a general deficit.

Vocal emotion recognition allows listeners to infer the emotional state of speakers from their vocal cues. This ability relies on sequential … tage selectively associated with impaired pitch discrimination. These findings suggest that altered pitch perception may contribute to vocal emotion recognition difficulties in PwPD, and may inform clinical management, ultimately contributing to improving PwPD's quality of life.

A distinct set of brain areas process prosody-the melody of speech.

Human speech carries information beyond the words themselves: pitch, loudness, duration, and pauses-jointly referred to as 'prosody'-emphasize critical words, help group words into phrases, and convey emotional and other socially-relevant information. Using a novel fMRI paradigm, we identify a set of prosody-responsive brain areas and then richly characterize them across 8 experiments (25 experimental conditions; n=51 participants). These areas-located on the lateral temporal surface bilaterally and in the frontal lobe-respond to the presence of prosody in both meaningful and meaningless speec

[Clinical study of speech understanding in noise].

The goal of this study was to determine the extent to which the difficulty frequently experienced by hearing-impaired listeners in understanding noisy speech can be clinically described in terms of the auditory site of lesion. To this end, shifts of speech reception threshold in noise, using standardized franco-québécois bisyllabic word lists, were obtained from noise-exposed workers and compared to Plomp's model to ascertain content validity. Shifts resulted from monaural listening to a broad-band speech spectrum noise held constant at 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio. In this manner, increasing th

Gravity-Dependent Modulation of Downbeat Nystagmus and Subjective Visual Vertical in the Roll Plane.

Downbeat nystagmus (DBN) is the most common form of acquired central vestibular nystagmus. Gravity perception in patients with DBN has previously been investigated by means of subjective visual straight ahead (SVA) and subjective visual vertical (SVV) in the pitch and roll planes only during whole-body tilts. To our knowledge, the effect of head tilt in the roll plane on the SVV and on DBN has not yet been systematically studied in patients. In this study, we investigated static and dynamic graviceptive function in the roll-plane in patients with DBN (patients) and healthy-controls (controls)
