Carbon starvation is one of the proposed mechanisms of drought-induced plant mortality. However, it has not been implicated in drought mortality as much as hydraulic failure. We tested the role of carbon on responses to drought by limiting stem photosynthesis and increasing tissue non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in saplings of the tropical tree Calophyllum longifolium Willd. (Calophyllaceae). We first artificially increased [NSC] by exposing half of the saplings to 2,000 µmol mol-1 of CO2, while the other half remained at ambient [CO2] for 6 wk. Following CO2 treatments, there were no signi

Synergistic interactions between soil-borne fungi and plant-parasitic nematodes can cause significantly more damage to a crop than either pathogen alone. For peppermint, synergistic interactions between Verticillium dahliae and plant-parasitic nematodes have only been described for the migratory endoparasite Pratylenchus, whereas there is no information for such interactions for ectoparasitic or sedentary endoparasitic nematodes. To determine whether species of these nematode groups co-occur with V. dahliae on peppermint, and to evaluate whether their interactions with V. dahliae on peppermint

Rubia cordifolia L. (RCL) is a plant with both commercial and medicinal values, widely distributed worldwide. Its roots have been used to treat various diseases, including abnormal uterine bleeding, arthritis, and kidney stones. However, its stems are often overlooked and regarded as waste. This study employed response surface methodology to optimize the ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) process for polysaccharides from RCL waste stems (RCLP), and compared energy consumption and carbon emissions with hot water extraction (HWE). The underlying mechanism of UAE for polysaccharide extraction w

Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) is a valuable technique for visualising RNA molecules in their native cellular context. Still, its application in plant tissues is often limited by tissue autofluorescence and the lack of optimised protocols. Here, we developed and validated a simple, reproducible FISH workflow to detect Apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd) in cucumber. Systematic optimisation of probe chemistry, tissue selection, and sampling stage significantly improved assay sensitivity and reproducibility. The AZDye594-labelled antisense riboprobe produced higher signal-to-background rat

Plant extracts are considered as a large source of active biomolecules, especially in phytosanitary and pharmacological fields. Anthyllis henoniana is a woody Saharan plant located in the big desert of North Africa. Our previous research paper proved the richness of the methanol extract obtained from the stems in flavonoids and phenolic compounds as well as its remarkable antioxidant activity. In this research, we started by investigating the phytochemical composition of the methanol extract using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill), a member of the Apiaceae family (Umbelliferaceae), is a hardy and perennial herb, with grooved stems, intermittent leaves, petiole with sheath, usually bisexual flower and yellow umbrella. Although fennel is a typical aromatic plant generally considered native to the Mediterranean shores, it has become widespread in many regions of the world and has long been used as a medicinal and culinary herb. The aim of this review is to collect recent information from the literature on the chemical composition, functional properties and toxicology of fennel. Collected da

The scale insects reduce plant photosynthetic ability by sucking sap from leaves and causing significant damage to the tea crop in most tea-producing countries. They suck the sap from stems and tea leaves, which not only prevents further growth but also reduces the nutritional quality of the leaves by promoting the growth of sooty molds. However, due to the widespread use of organosynthetic pesticides in recent decades, most insect pests have developed high levels of pesticide resistance, reducing the effectiveness of insecticide application. Bio-control agents are environmentally safe and pro

The association between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and cell wall composition with regard to the mitigation of cadmium (Cd) toxicity in Brassica napus L. was investigated. Cd caused growth retardation, leaf chlorosis, and decreased endogenous H2S content in Brassica napus roots. Stimulating l-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD)-mediated H2S production with H2S releaser (NaHS) markedly improved plant growth, reduced Cd content in stems and leaves, and rescued Cd-induced chlorosis. Furthermore, increased Cd retention was observed in root cell walls, indicating that NaHS reduced Cd movement from the roots to

Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is one of the most widely used techniques for gene expression analysis in molecular biology. However, the accuracy of relative gene expression quantification largely depends on the stability of the reference genes used for normalization. Sambucus nigra L. (elderberry) is a valuable medicinal and edible plant rich in anthocyanins and other bioactive compounds. Despite its increasing research and application value, no reference genes have been validated for this species. In this study, we applied RT-qPCR alongside four algorithms (GeNorm, NormFind

Plants constitute a source of natural phytochemical components which are widely known for their potential biological activities. This work concerned a study of the antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities of squirting cucumber (Ecballium elaterium L.) parts (flowers, fruits, leaves and stems) using different solvent extracts (cyclohexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water). The different squirting cucumber parts had an appreciable anti-tumour activity in the less polar extracts contrarily to the antioxidant activity. Squirting cucumber flowers had an appreciabl

Hemipteran plant sap feeders acquire food by inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the apoplast (xylem sap feeders) or symplast (phloem sap feeders). When feeding, these insects seal their stylets inside the plant with a salivary sheath, minimising embolisms. The main impact of the insect on the host or food plant consists of sucking plant sap, transmitting phytopathogenic agents, or triggering galls as hypertrophic and/or hyperplastic neoformations. This paper proposes a rapid method for locating and counting the salivary sheaths of Philaenus spumarius (the Meadow Spittlebug), the

To identify cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) and Cd hyperaccumulators for Cd-contaminated waters. A potential species of constructed wetland plants (P. oleracea) was examined for their CdS NPs and Cd ions tolerance and accumulation. This study evaluated the P. oleracea life traits response, Cd accumulation, bioaccumulation factor (BCF), and translocation factor (TF) to assess their abilities to absorb and accumulate Cd. P. oleracea demonstrates high tolerance to both CdS NPs and Cd stress, with no significant effects observed on biomass, leaf color, plant height, or root length. High ac

With growing scientific interest in cannabinoids, a number of studies have focused on biological activities of cannabidiol and its major source, inflorescence and leaf of Cannabis sativa plant. However, recent analytical chemistry studies have reported the pharmacological significance of non-cannabinoid phytochemicals that are rich in other parts of the plant. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Cannabis extracts from plant parts of shelled seeds, roots, and stems containing no or trace amounts of cannabinoids. Among water and ethanol extracts

This paper deals with the removal of heavy metals from marginal soil mixtures from the Cobre Las Cruces and Aznalcóllar mining areas containing high concentrations of metals (Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb and As) by means of phytoremediation using Jatropha curcas L., and the subsequent production of biocatalysts from the plant biomass. First, J. curcas L. was sowed in eight mixtures of these mining soils to study its adaption to these high-contaminated soils and its growth during 60 days in a greenhouse under conditions simulating the South of Spain's spring climate. Later, the most suitable

Stem cell polyphenols represent a promising avenue for enhancing wound healing through their multifaceted biological activities. Polyphenols, naturally occurring compounds with potent antioxidant properties, can modulate inflammatory responses, reduce oxidative stress, and promote the proliferation and migration of essential cells involved in tissue repair, such as fibroblasts and keratinocytes. Additionally, they play a critical role in angiogenesis, facilitating improved blood supply to healing tissues. Research indicates that the synergistic use of polyphenols with stem cell therapies could

The Cu accumulation capacity of stem cuttings of Portulaca oleracea was assessed in two different soils, alfisol and vertisol, which differ from each other mainly due to their clay content - several fold lower in the former than in the latter. The DTPA extractable concentration of Cu in soil and the level of its accumulation in stem cuttings were, therefore, greater in alfisol than in vertisol. In the mixed soils, the DTPA extractable as well as plant accumulated levels of Cu decreased with an increase in the proportion of vertisol. With an increase in the soil available and plant accumulated

The Brazilian ironstone outcrops (cangas) impose challenging conditions for establishing species. Adapted species should exhibit different responses to xeric conditions of cangas. To understand these adaptations, our plant model was Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein, an endemic and threatened species restricted to the cangas of the Amazon Forest. Herein, we investigate structural adaptations that are important for its conservation, including anatomical characteristics of stems and leaves. To this goal, we evaluated the plant anatomy, including developmental aspects, between plan

The Mucuna macrocarpa Wall, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, exhibits significant cultivation-dependent variations in the accumulation and yield of its medicinal components. Salicylic acid (SA) has demonstrated the potential to regulate plant growth, which can be strategically used to enhance medicinal yield, offering a promising approach for high-yield cultivation in medicinal plants. This study aimed to investigate the changes in the medicinal components of Mucuna macrocarpa seedlings (4 months old) at different concentrations of SA (0, 0.1, 0.5, 0.9, and 1.3 mM) in a pot experiment. Bulbil is an important asexual reproductive structure of bulbil plants. It mainly grows in leaf axils, leaf forks, tubers and the upper and near ground ends of flower stems of plants. They play a significant role in the reproduction of numerous herbaceous plant species by serving as agents of plant propagation, energy reserves, and survival mechanisms in adverse environmental conditions. Despite extensive research on bulbil-plants regarding their resources, development mechanisms, and utilisation, a comprehensive review of bulbil is lacking, hindering progress in exploiting bulbil resources.
