Skimboarder's toe: findings on high-field MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose is to report hyperdorsiflexion injuries of the metatarsophalangeal joints associated with the sport of skimboarding and to describe the MRI appearance of these injuries. CONCLUSION: Skimboarding can be associated with hyperdorsiflexion injuries of the metatarsophalangeal joint. MRI shows that such injuries are associated with hyperdorsiflexion of the extensor hallucis longus or extensor digitorum longus tendon, causing tear of the extensor expansion. Unlike turf toe, in which the plantar plate is involved, skimboarder's toe involves structures dorsal to the metatarsopha

Proximal first metatarsal opening wedge osteotomy: geometric analysis on saw bone models.

BACKGROUND: For hallux valgus correction, distal first metatarsal osteotomy is generally used for minor to moderate deformities, diaphyseal osteotomy for moderate deformities and basal osteotomy or arthrodesis for severe deformities. With the advent of locking plates, there has been renewed interest in opening wedge basal osteotomy. OBJECTIVE: We undertook this study in order to understand the power and limitations of this osteotomy. METHOD: Proximal opening wedge osteotomies were performed on saw bone models in four orientations, with three different wedge sizes: (1) perpendicular to the gr

The effect of triceps surae contracture force on plantar foot pressure distribution.

BACKGROUND: Triceps surae contractures have been associated with foot and ankle pathology. Achilles tendon contractures have been shown to shift plantar foot pressure from the heel to the forefoot. The purpose of this study was to determine whether isolated gastrocnemius contractures had similar effects and to assess the effects of gastrocnemius or soleus contracture on midfoot plantar pressure. METHODS: Ten fresh frozen cadaver below-knee specimens were loaded to 79 pounds (350 N) plantar force with the foot unconstrained on a 10-degree dorsiflexed plate. Combinations of static gastrocnemius

Ground reaction forces on the plantar surface of the foot after talectomy in the myelomeningocele.

Results of talectomies in 19 patients with severe foot deformities secondary to myelomeningocele were evaluated with an average follow-up of 12 years, 7 months. Although an apparently plantigrade foot was usually obtained, talectomy rarely succeeded in distributing weightbearing forces uniformly over the plantar surface. Photoelastic force-plate analysis incorporating three-dimensional contour mapping clearly identified areas of high ground-foot reaction forces (GFRs) and high-pressure gradients. We suggest that such high-pressure areas predispose these patients to neurotrophic ulceration.

Operative Outcomes of Grade 3 Turf Toe Injuries in Competitive Football Players.

BACKGROUND: Turf toe is a term used to describe a hyperextension injury to the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Although the vast majority of turf toe injuries can be treated successfully without operative intervention, there are instances where surgery is required to allow the athlete to return to play. Although there is a plethora of literature on turf toe injuries and nonoperative management, there are currently few reports on operative outcomes in athletes. METHODS: We obtained all cases of turf toe repair according to the ICD-10 procedural code. The inclusion criteria included: age great

Pedobarographic Analysis Following Pemberton's Pericapsular Osteotomy for Unilateral Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: An Observational Study.

Successful clinical and radiographic outcomes have been reported in patients with unilateral developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) following Pemberton pericapsular osteotomy (PPO). However, residual gait deviations are seen in both the affected and unaffected limbs. To date it is not known whether these deviations result in abnormal plantar pressure in such patients. This study investigated this possibility by performing pedobarographic, clinical, and radiographic examinations after PPO in 20 patients (age: 102.5 ± 19.0 months) with unilateral DDH who underwent PPO at 34.2 ± 9.8 months of a

Changes in Foot Biomechanics During Pregnancy: Associations With Plantar Pressure, Low Back Pain and Daily Function in Taiwanese Women.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal data on pregnancy-related changes in plantar loading and balance are limited, particularly among Asian populations. This study investigated trimester-specific alterations in plantar pressure, static and dynamic balance, and pain-related functional interference in pregnant Taiwanese women. METHODS: Eighty-eight pregnant women were prospectively assessed across six gestational time points (8-36 weeks). Plantar pressure distribution and static balance were measured using a pressure plate system (FOOTPLATEC), and dynamic balance was evaluated using the timed up and go (TU

An Anatomical Basis for the Myofascial Trigger Points of the Abductor Hallucis Muscle.

Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by pain and a limited range of joint motion caused by muscle contracture related to motor-end-plate dysfunction and the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). It is the most frequent cause of musculoskeletal pain, with a worldwide prevalence varying between 13.7% and 47%. Of the patients with myofascial pain syndrome, approximately 17% have pain in the medial hindfoot area. The abductor hallucis muscle is located in the medial, posterior region of the foot and is related to painful plantar syndromes. The objective of this study was to describe

Successful replantation of both lower legs in a 41-year-old man.

Both severed legs were replanted in a 41-year-old man. Bilateral tibia and fibula were shortened by 4 cm equally. Tibial fixation was performed with reconstruction plate. Four weeks after the replantation, active and passive exercises were initiated in both of the knee joints. Four months after surgery, the patient was capable of walking independently for 20-30 m without the aid of crutches. After 28 months' follow-up, plantar sensitivity was defined as S3. This patient was satisfactory with the cosmetic and functional results.

Plantar pressure distribution can be used to identify sarcopenia in maintenance hemodialysis patients.

Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) often suffer from sarcopenia, which affects their balance and significantly increases the risk of falls and death. Actively identifying sarcopenia, understanding the relationship between sarcopenia and the distribution of plantar pressure and balance ability in MHD patients, and reducing the risk of unstable falls are crucial. This study aims to develop an auxiliary screening model for sarcopenia in MHD patients based on machine learning methods using plantar pressure biomechanical indicators, while also paying attention to the gender differen

Gadolinium-based contrast agents aggravate mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia in a nitroglycerine-induced migraine model in male mice.

In the diagnosis of migraine, which is a neurovascular disease, gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are used to rule out more serious conditions. On the other hand, it remains unclear as a scientific gap whether GBCAs may trigger migraine-related pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of GBCAs on mechanical and thermal pain behaviour in a nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced migraine model in mice. NTG (10 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to adult (6-8weeks old) BALB/c mice 2 h before behavioral tests 5 times every other day on days 1st, 3rd, 5th and 9th to induce migra

The Impact of Football Boot Design on Lower Limb Injury Risk: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Football boots-serving as the critical interface between the player and the playing surface-play a decisive role in modulating the risk of non‑contact lower‑limb injuries. Although numerous studies have investigated the effects of stud configuration, sole‑plate stiffness, and boot-foot-surface interaction on lower‑limb biomechanics, an integrated evaluation of their injury implications remains lacking. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search (2005-2025) was conducted across Elsevier, EBSCO, Web of Science, PubMed Central, and Footwear Science. Thirty‑two stu

[Lapidus arthrodesis].

The tarso-metatarsal 1 joint (TMT-I) arthrodesis is a treatment option or moderate to severe hallux valgus (HV) deformities. Instability of the TMT1 joint is still a debatable indication. Using stable osteosynthesis techniques allows early postoperative weight bearing. Plantar plating combined with a lag screw is the biomechanical most stable construct. An additional intermetatarsal screw can improve the horizontal stability. Clinical results are good and radiological parameters stay constant, even in the long term.

Management of nonreducible lesser toe interphalangeal dislocation: an unusual injury.

Interphalangeal joint dislocations of the lesser toes are relatively rare in clinical practice. Most nonreducible interphalangeal joint dislocations occur as a result of rupture or interposition of the plantar plate or of the collateral ligament in the joint space, thus hindering a closed reduction and, in most cases, compelling an open reduction. A post-reduction radiologic exploration is then essential to identify such an entity and proceed consequently. In some cases, such as the one introduced herein, a misdiagnosis, along with an inadequate surgical correction may lead to recurrence of th

Fracture-dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint: open reduction through a medial incisional approach.

A case of traumatic fracture-dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is reported. This type of injury is extremely rare. The injury was associated with complete disruption of the following anatomic structures: conjoined tendon of abductor hallucis and medial head of flexor hallucis brevis, plantar plate, and the intersesamoid ligament. Additionally, there was a transverse fracture of the tibial sesamoid. Excision of the fractured tibial sesamoid trapped within the joint and primary repair was achieved through a medial incisional approach. A complete description of the repair and rat

A Traumatic Loss of the Calcaneus and Heel Pad From a Lawnmower Injury in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Traumatic calcaneal injuries with combined soft tissue loss are extremely rare in pediatric patients, posing significant reconstructive challenges due to contamination and the need to preserve growth potential. We report a case of a 10-year-old female who sustained a lawnmower-induced degloving injury with partial calcaneal loss, plantar heel pad avulsion, and posterior calf soft tissue damage. Management included emergent debridement followed by staged reconstruction aimed at preserving the distal calcaneal growth plate. At 11 months post-injury, the patient achieved complete wound closure, i
