Seed dormancy shapes gene drive dynamics in plants.

Gene drives offer revolutionary potential for the management of problematic plant populations, such as invasive weeds and herbicide-resistant species, by rapidly spreading desired genetic alterations. Two recent studies have provided experimental demonstrations of engineered CRISPR gene drive systems in plants (CAIN and ClvR). However, the successful application of such systems in the field will critically depend on an accurate understanding of plant-specific life-history traits, especially seed dormancy, a ubiquitous yet frequently overlooked eco-evolutionary force. In this study, we develop …

Cross-kingdom communication between plants and parasitic nematodes.

Plant-parasitic nematodes and their hosts engage in a continuous exchange of signals cross-kingdom. On the one hand, parasites exploit host- … , in concert. In this Tansley insight, we review the current understanding of communication between plants and parasitic nematodes, framed by the developmental timeline. We focus on notable, reciprocal signals between plant and parasite that gate key life cycle transitions in the parasite, while acknowledging that these processes are embedded within, and …

Update: carbonic anhydrases in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria.

This update discusses the physiological roles of carbonic anhydrase (CA) in plants and algae. It examines some new observations about the functions and assumed functions of CA in plants and algae. Specifically, CA does not regulate pH within plant cells as in blood, which has a high CO2 concentration. Nor do the chloroplast CAs help deliver CO2 to Rubisco during C3 photosynthesis in plants. However, CAs are essential to plants and algae. An under-appreciated function of CA is supplying bicarbonate for many other carboxylases in plants and algae. These CA-requiring carboxylases are involved in …

Nucleation-Mode-Particle Emissions from Biosolid Processing Plants.

Although modern technologies have significantly reduced mass emissions of particulate matter, there remains growing concern about the number emissions of particles smaller than 10 nm in diameter. Despite their minimal contribution to total aerosol mass, these particles have high surface-to-volume ratios, making them highly reactive and capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory tract. Here we show that biosolid processing facilities can emit nanoparticles. Repeated and persistent episodes of elevated particle number concentrations (PNs) were observed downwind from a facility, frequently

Can Mimosa pudica Plants Enumerate Light Exposure Events?

Plants sense and respond to information present in their surrounding environment. Recent work has sought to characterize the limits of these information processing abilities. Here, we present evidence that the movements of Mimosa pudica plants are mediated by the number of illumination events to which they have been exposed. The plants were repeatedly presented with 2 days in which light was provided for half of the day, followed by a third day in which light was not provided. The nyctinastic movements of the plants shifted to follow this light-light-dark pattern. During early, dark hours prio…

Symbiosis vs pathogenesis in plants: Reflections and perspectives.

Plant-microbe partnerships constitute a complex and intricately woven network of connections that have evolved over countless centuries, involving both cooperation and antagonism. In various contexts, plants and microorganisms engage in mutually beneficial partnerships that enhance crop health and maintain balance in ecosystems. However, these associations also render plants susceptible to a range of pathogens. Understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms governing these associations is crucial, given the notable susceptibility of plants to external environmental influences. Based on quo…

Molecular translocation between parasitic plants and their hosts.

Parasitic plants are a special group deriving their nutrients from another plant, some of which such as witchweeds (Striga spp.) and broomrapes (Orobanche and Phelipanche spp.) are referred as weeds responsible for severe crop losses in agriculture. The parasite attaches to and feeds off its host using a haustorium, which also facilitates the transport of various molecules between the parasite and its host. These translocation molecules have received extensive attention from researchers. In this review, we summarize the existing knowledge on the transfer of molecules such as pathogens, herbici…

New Insights Concerning Phytophotodermatitis Induced by Phototoxic Plants.

The present review explores the underlying mechanisms of phytophotodermatitis, a non-immunologic skin reaction triggered by certain plants followed by exposure to ultraviolet radiation emitted by sunlight. Recent research has advanced our understanding of the pathophysiology of phytophotodermatitis, highlighting the interaction between plant-derived photosensitizing compounds (e.g., furanocoumarins and psoralens) and ultraviolet light leading to skin damage (e.g., erythema, fluid blisters, edema, and hyperpigmentation), identifying these compounds as key contributors to the phototoxic reaction…

Genome Evolution in Plants: Complex Thalloid Liverworts (Marchantiopsida).

Why do some genomes stay small and simple, while others become huge, and why are some genomes more stable? In contrast to angiosperms and gymnosperms, liverworts are characterized by small genomes with low variation in size and conserved chromosome numbers. We quantified genome evolution among five Marchantiophyta (liverworts), measuring gene characteristics, transposable element (TE) landscape, collinearity, and sex chromosome evolution that might explain the small size and limited variability of liverwort genomes. No genome duplications were identified among examined liverworts and levels of

Molecular regulation of zinc deficiency responses in plants.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants and animals. Because of its low availability in arable soils worldwide, Zn deficiency is becoming a serious agricultural problem resulting in decreases of crop yield and nutritional quality. Plants have evolved multiple responses to adapt to low levels of soil Zn supply, involving biochemical and physiological changes to improve Zn acquisition and utilization, and defend against Zn deficiency stress. In this review, we summarize the physiological and biochemical adaptations of plants to Zn deficiency, the roles of transporters and metal-bindin…

Brassinosteroids in Plants: Crosstalk with Small-Molecule Compounds.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are known as the sixth type of plant hormone participating in various physiological and biochemical activities and play an irreplaceable role in plants. Small-molecule compounds (SMCs) such as nitric oxide (NO), ethylene, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are involved in plant growth and development as signaling messengers. Recently, the involvement of SMCs in BR-mediated growth and stress responses is gradually being discovered in plants, including seed germination, adventitious rooting, stem elongation, fruit ripening, and stress responses. The cross…

Plants as a realized niche for Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a human pathogen. It is the causative agent of listeriosis, the leading cause of bacterial-linked foodborne mortality in Europe and elsewhere. Outbreaks of listeriosis have been associated with the consumption of fresh produce including vegetables and fruits. In this review we summarize current data providing direct or indirect evidence that plants can serve as habitat for L. monocytogenes, enabling this human pathogen to survive and grow. The current knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the interaction of this bacterium with plants is addressed, and whether this f…

H2S signaling in plants and applications in agriculture.

The signaling properties of the gasotransmitter molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is endogenously generated in plant cells, are mainly observed during persulfidation, a protein post-translational modification (PTM) that affects redox-sensitive cysteine residues. There is growing experimental evidence that H2S in higher plants may function as a mechanism of response to environmental stress conditions. In addition, exogenous applications of H2S to plants appear to provide additional protection against stresses, such as salinity, drought, extreme temperatures and heavy metals, mainly through…
