A road map through the multi-faceted world of female genital cosmetic surgical techniques.

The demand for female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) has significantly increased in recent years for two reasons: the advancement of surgical operations and the increased attention to women's esthetic and sexual well-being. Three authors independently analyzed different databases up to April 1, 2024. They selected the relevant data according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two team members retrieved and evaluated the full text of the articles for eligibility, extracted the data independently, and included populations, intervention type, and outcomes using a pre-piloted standard method. FIGO statement: Cosmetic genital surgery.

Cosmetic genital surgery refers to various procedures that involve surgical alteration of the vulvovaginal anatomy for aesthetic reasons in women without structural or functional abnormalities. The growing demand for such procedures stems from exposure to media and online content that reinforced the notion that certain genital appearances do not conform to an idealized aesthetic standard. There is, however, a lack of strong evidence and limited published research to support the claim that cosmetic genital surgery is safe and effective. FIGO asserts that it is ethically inappropriate for obstet

The Full Continuum of Robotic Breast Surgery: Robotic-assisted Mastectomy, Robotic DIEP Flap, and Robotic Supermicrosurgery.

In recent years, robotic surgery has rapidly expanded to improve surgical outcomes in a variety of surgical subspecialties. Although plastic surgery has taken longer to integrate robotic surgery into practice, the advantages of robotic-assisted surgery, including improved visualization and resolution, minimally invasive approaches, and the ability to surpass human precision and scale, have driven its more recent adoption into plastic surgery. Currently, procedures performed with robotic assistance that are considered part of the continuum of surgical treatment of breast cancer include robotic-

Effect of a Perioperative Educational Video in Patients Undergoing Mohs Reconstruction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and most are treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) by fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeons. Complex reconstruction in cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas often requires a plastic surgery consult. The uncertainty regarding reconstructive options and cosmetic appearance is difficult emotionally and cognitively for patients. OBJECTIVES: To improve patient understanding about MMS reconstruction with plastic surgeons, we investigated the utility of a multimedia presentation during perioperative edu

Use of Robotic Surgery in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Robotic systems offer enhanced precision, dexterity, and visualization, which are essential in addressing the complex nature of plastic surgery procedures. Despite widespread adoption in other surgical specialties, such as urology and gynecology, their application in plastic surgery remains underexplored. This review examines the use of robotic systems in plastic and reconstructive surgery with a focus on clinical outcomes. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. Search terms included ("robotic surgery" OR "surgical r…

Surgical Capacity Assessment and Leverage in the Palestinian Land (SCALPEL-I) Study: The First Nationwide Plastic Surgery Capacity Evaluation in Palestine.

BACKGROUND: Access to surgical care in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs), especially in war-torn areas such as the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), is a global health priority. The plastic surgical capacity in the oPt has not been evaluated. This study provides the first systematic evaluation of plastic surgical capacity in the oPt. METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted between December 2022 and February 2023 included facilities providing plastic surgery services in the oPt, except private centers run by nonsurgeons. Smoking and Postoperative Complications in Plastic and General Surgical Procedures: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis of 294,903 Patients from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database from 2005 to 2014.

BACKGROUND: Smoking as a risk factor for postoperative complications is more relevant in elective plastic surgery than in urgent general surgery. From 2005 to 2014, the U.S. smoking rate decreased from 20.9 percent to 16.8 percent. This study compares smoking prevalence in plastic and general surgery patients, and postoperative complications when smoking is isolated as an independent risk factor. METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was used to examine smoking and 30-day postoperative complications for plastic and general surgery pro

Auxiliary usage of botulinum toxin A in plastic surgery in China.

BACKGROUND: Currently, botulinum toxin A (BTA) is mainly used in the treatment of muscle spasms and in cosmetic procedures, and its cosmetic indications are expanding rapidly. There have been sporadic reports focused on the preoperative usage of BTA complementing plastic surgery. We briefly summarize the current experience of BTA complementing plastic surgery in China based on clinical experience. METHODS: We reported a brief review of the preoperative use of BTA as an accessory to plastic surgery (blepharoplasty, chin augmentation, mandibular angle ostectomy, rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid fil

Aesthetically Thriving through Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): An Evaluation of Patient Motivation and Perception on Aesthetic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Procedures.

Although the cancellation of elective procedures due to the COVID-19 outbreak has been a vital precaution, it has resulted in the suspension of aesthetic procedures and surgeries worldwide. Consequently, this postponement and other factors might have a negative impact on patients planning to undergo aesthetic procedures. Understanding the changes in patient motivation and perception in comparison to the prepandemic period is imperative for proper adjustment of plastic surgery clinics.A prospective questionnaire study was conducted on patients with cancelled aesthetic surgeries or procedures to

Craniosynostosis surgery practice patterns in the United States: what are we doing and how are we doing it?

OBJECTIVE: The surgical management of craniosynostosis varies without consensus on technique or standard outcomes reporting. The authors of this study aimed to investigate current surgical management of craniosynostosis in the United States. METHODS: Two hundred seventy-five surgeons actively treating craniosynostosis in the United States were surveyed. The results from a 28-item instrument were analyzed according to surgeon specialty, surgeon tenure, and geographic location of practice. RESULTS: The overall response rate was 47.6% (131/275), and final analyses included 58 plastic and recons
