Transgenic mice expressing the cell receptor for poliovirus have been generated and are susceptible to poliovirus infection. TgPVR mice have been used to answer questions about the pathogenesis of poliovirus infection. Despite the widespread pattern of PVR expression, poliovirus infection in TgPVR mice is restricted to only a few sites, indicating that poliovirus tropism is not controlled solely by the ability of cells to bind virus. Correlation has been revealed between the circulation of polioviruses among the population and environmental objects. A rise in the circulation of polioviruses, type I, was caused by a decrease in collective immunity to this virus type. Water supply and sewage system purification was found ineffective with respect to enteroviral contamination. Vaccinal prophylaxis, carried out for many years, did not lead to the elimination of poliovirus strains, genetically different from vaccine ones.

A macroscopic (tube) complement fixation test for poliomyelitis, using infected tissue culture fluids, is described. The test was applied to 27 individuals with a clinical diagnosis of poliomyelitis. In 18 patients it was possible to make a laboratory diagnosis of poliomyelitis on the basis of a rise in complement-fixing antibody titer and in 4 others on the basis of a high stationary antibody titer.
