Rupture of a non-rheumatoid popliteal cyst: a syndrome mimicking thrombophlebitis.

Rupture of a popliteal cyst and dissection of its contents into the calf may produce pain, swelling, a positive Homan's sign and other findings closely resembling thrombophlebitis of the calf. The correct diagnosis is not often made, and the patient is subjected to needless long term anticoagulant therapy with its potential complications. To avoid this, it is essential that this possibility be kept in mind in all patients in whom the diagnosis of thrombophlebitis is considered. The history of preexisting arthritis of the knee, joint effusion and popliteal cyst are strongly suggestive of a rupt

Posterior compartment syndrome resulting from a dissecting popliteal cyst. Case report.

Calf swelling, associated with an intra-articular effusion of the knee, should be considered a dissecting popliteal cyst until proven otherwise. The posterior compartment syndrome caused by an increase in pressure within the deep posterior compartment of the leg is usually secondary to trauma. This case history of a dissecting popliteal cyst reports another unusual cause of the posterior compartment syndrome. Popliteal cysts, especially dissecting ones, are typical of connective tissue diseases, and are not limited to rheumatoid arthritis.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing cyst wall preservation against cyst wall resection during arthroscopic popliteal cyst decompression.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal arthroscopic management for popliteal cyst decompression remains uncertain, with ongoing debate between preserving the cyst wall or completely removing it. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes and complications of arthroscopic popliteal cyst decompression with cyst wall preservation and cyst wall resection. METHODS: A systematic review adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines was conducted. It encompassed studies that focused on arthroscopic popliteal cyst decompression, considering both cyst wall p

Enlarging, Multilobulated Popliteal Cyst After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

CASE: A 69-year-old woman presented with a 5-year history of an enlarging popliteal cyst 7 years after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large, multilobulated popliteal cyst. Initial diagnostic workup was inconclusive but repeat evaluation met criteria for culture-negative prosthetic joint infection (PJI). She underwent revision TKA, intraoperative cultures identified Micrococcus luteus, and she remains on antibiotic suppression. At her 4-year follow-up, she demonstrated complete resolution of the popliteal cyst with minimal pain. CONCLUSION: Popliteal cysts

Popliteal Cyst Compressive Tibial Neuropathy and Venous Insufficiency: A Case Report.

Popliteal cysts are a collection of synovial fluid found in the popliteal fossa that typically form in adults in association with traumatic injuries, degenerative conditions, or inflammatory arthritis of the knee. While often asymptomatic, popliteal cysts may become problematic as enlarging and ruptured cysts may compress surrounding neurovascular structures, resulting in lower extremity edema or peripheral neuropathy. We report a unique case of a symptomatic popliteal cyst in a patient with both compressive neuropathy and venous congestion in the setting of a non-ruptured popliteal cyst after

Popliteal cyst before William Baker: first report in the Galenic Corpus.

INTRODUCTION: A popliteal cyst, also known as Baker cyst, is a benign fluctuant swelling of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa in the popliteal fossa at the back of the knee. The cyst is named after William Morrant Baker, who is considered to have first described this fluid collection with new sac formation outside of the knee-joint in 1877. We herein present a short description contained in the Galenic Corpus that appears to match to what we now call the Baker cyst. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Α thorough survey of Kühn's Galenic Corpus was performed. RESULTS: The 14th book of Kühn's edition

Proximal dissection of a popliteal giant synovial cyst: a case report.

Giant synovial cysts in patients with rheumatoid arthritis are well-recognized soft-tissue masses adjacent to the knee. Cases involving the elbow, hip, and other synovial joints have been reported as well. Regardless of location, these expanding, space-occupying lesions usually present with nonspecific symptoms of swelling and pain. Less commonly, the original presentation may be related to the secondary effects of the cyst on nearby anatomic structures. We present a case of a giant synovial cyst originating posteriorly in the knee, which, rather than dissecting distally into the calf, dissect

[Pseudothrombophlebitis due to an expansive popliteal cyst associated with Reiter's syndrome].

Popliteal cysts presenting as thrombophlebitis are unusual diseases of the popliteal fossa and are commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis or meniscal tears. The authors report the case of a 38-year-old man with Reiter's syndrome in which a synovial cyst of the popliteal space, mimicking symptoms suggestive of deep venous thrombosis, complicated the course of the arthritis. Clinical and diagnostic features of this rare popliteal pathology are discussed and the usefulness of noninvasive diagnostic methods for detecting this disease, in particular that of echotomography, is emphasized. Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery: treatment by cyst removal.

Controversy still exists concerning the optimal treatment for adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery: complete removal of the cyst without arterectomy or arteriectomy with venous replacement. In the two cases presented here, it was possible to completely excise the cyst and to preserve a solid arterial wall despite the magnitude of lesions documented on preoperative angiograms. Good functional and anatomic outcome has been maintained for 5 and 9 years, respectively. According to the available literature on pathologic data, complete cyst excision without arterial reconstruction is o

Popliteal cyst mimicking thrombophlebitis as the first indication of knee disease.

Five patients, none of whom were previously known to have knee disease, developed leg swelling which was misdiagnosed as thrombophlebitis. Four were treated with anticoagulants and one developed a large calf hematoma requiring fasciotomy. The primary physicians failed to appreciate evidence of knee disease in these patients, although the rheumatology consultant found knee effusion, and a popliteal cyst was found by arthrography or ultrasonography in every case. The occurrence of popliteal cyst as the first sign of knee disease emphasizes the importance of careful examination of the knee in all
