Corneal endothelial damage with neodymium:YAG laser.

Acute corneal endothelial changes following Nd:YAG laser application were evaluated in two series of rabbits. The first series underwent anterior capsulotomy, while the second series received laser applications at calculated distances ranging from 0.0 mm to 1.8 mm posterior to the endothelium. The rabbits were killed 24 hours after treatment and the endothelium evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. None of the eyes undergoing anterior capsulotomy showed endothelial damage, but the endothelium was focally denuded when laser shots were applied within 1.0 mm of it, and Descemet's membrane

Successful recovery from misdirection syndrome in nanophthalmic eyes by performing an anterior vitrectomy through the anterior chamber.

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of iridectomy, capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy through the anterior chamber to treat misdirection syndrome in pseudophakic nanophthalmic eyes. METHODS: This was a non-comparative study of seven nanophthalmic eyes from four consecutive patients. All eyes developed misdirection syndrome after successful cataract surgery. Treatment for misdirection syndrome involved capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy through a peripheral iridectomy from the anterior chamber using a 25-gauge vitreous cutter. The best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure and an

Combined pars plana and limbal approach for removal of congenital cataracts.

UNLABELLED: We describe a combined pars plana-limbal approach using a 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy system for removal of congenital cataracts in a 5-month-old boy. The operated eye had anterior capsulotomy, lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy through a pars plana transconjunctival incision created with a 25-gauge trocar. A limbal port incision was used to introduce an infusion micro cannula to maintain the anterior chamber. Incisions did not require suture closure. Following the procedure, inflammation was mild, the pupil was circular and centric, and…

Posterior capsule opacity in Retinitis Pigmentosa according to different biomaterials of intraocular lenses: Our clinical experience.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Complicated Cataract is frequently associated with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). This retinopathy is a great cause of visual impairment, and cataract surgery may resolve partially the situation and restore sight. Unfortunately, in this case there is a very high incidence of Posterior Capsule Opacity (PCO) ranging in several studies a percentage of 100% at six months. Our goal was to evaluate whether the high incidence of PCO is associated to specific type of Intraocular Lens (IOL) biomaterials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational retrospective study deals with 75 eyes o

Pseudophakic keratoplasty: posterior chamber lens implantation in the presence of ruptured capsule.

A technique is described for implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens during keratoplasty for bullous keratopathy when a large capsulotomy and vitreous prolapse are present. Seven cases of pseudophakic or aphakic bullous keratopathy with anterior chamber, iris-fixated, or no intraocular lens in place are reported. A completely intact posterior capsule is not necessary to support safely a sulcus-fixated posterior chamber lens. Anterior segment reconstruction, careful removal of existing intraocular lenses (except a posterior chamber lens), vitrectomy through the ruptured posterior c
