Preliminary evidence for therapeutic impact of intravesical glucosamine on protamine sulfate and potassium chloride-induced bladder overactivity in rat model.

PURPOSE: To investigate the protective effect of intravesical glucosamine in treating overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS: Ninety-two female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided into 4 groups i.e. protamine sulfate (PS), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and glucosamine-treated PS (GPS), and normal saline control (NC) were used. We induced hyperactivity in rats via intravesical infusion of PS and potassium chloride (KCl), whereas the NC group underwent a sustained intravesical saline infusion for 1 h. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a potential antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory agent was employed as posi…

Are ascitic electrolytes usable in cirrhotic patients? Correlation of sodium, potassium, chloride, urea, and creatinine concentrations in ascitic fluid and blood.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of ascitic cirrhosis requires monitoring of blood biochemistry. A direct measure of ascites could simplify the medical procedure. We aimed to assess the correlation of sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), urea (U), and creatinine (Creat) in ascitic fluid and venous blood. METHODS: Ascitic fluid and venous blood samples were collected simultaneously from 70 cirrhotic patients. Na, K, Cl, U, and Creat were measured in all samples using a biochemical auto-analyzer. RESULTS: Results are expressed as the mean and SD of 200 concomitant samples of ascitic fluid and venou

Diet, evolution and aging--the pathophysiologic effects of the post-agricultural inversion of the potassium-to-sodium and base-to-chloride ratios in the human diet.

Theoretically, we humans should be better adapted physiologically to the diet our ancestors were exposed to during millions of years of hominid evolution than to the diet we have been eating since the agricultural revolution a mere 10,000 years ago, and since industrialization only 200 years ago. Among the many health problems resulting from this mismatch between our genetically determined nutritional requirements and our current diet, some might be a consequence in part of the deficiency of potassium alkali salts (K-base), which are amply present in the plant foods that our ancestors ate in a

Biochar, zeolite, and ferric chloride effectively separate phosphorus and nitrogen (plus potassium) in swine manure: A coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation approach.

We studied the effectiveness of different coagulants (0.15 M FeCl3, 0.40 M HCl, and 2.5% H3PO4) in separating key plant macronutrients (N as NH4+, P, and K) from swine manure into solid and liquid fractions for their sustainable use in agriculture. This study assesses how these coagulants impact nutrient recovery and separated fraction's characteristics, aiming to improve the solid-liquid separation process using biochar and zeolite. The FeCl3 treatment, biochar, and zeolite showed optimum nutrient recovery among the tested coagulants for solid (93% of total P) and liquid (90% and 50% of total

Successful management of live ectopic pregnancy with high beta-hCG titres by ultrasound-guided potassium chloride injection and systemic methotrexate.

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (Mtx) is accepted modality for conservative treatment of ectopic pregnancy. However, there is no consensus regarding its use in live ectopic pregnancy and high serum beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta-hCG) titres. CASE REPORT: We report a successful management of live ectopic pregnancy in a 27-year-old nulliparous woman, with very high beta-hCG titres (89,200 mIU/mL), using ultrasound-guided intra-sac potassium chloride (KCl) injection and systemic Mtx. Successful resolution of the ectopic pregnancy, with negative serum beta-hCG (<1 mIU/mL) was achieved after th…

Molecular cloning, primary structure, and characterization of two members of the mammalian electroneutral sodium-(potassium)-chloride cotransporter family expressed in kidney.

Electrically silent Na(+)-(K+)-Cl- transporter systems are present in a wide variety of cells and serve diverse physiological functions. In chloride secretory and absorbing epithelia, these cotransporters provide the chloride entry mechanism crucial for transcellular chloride transport. We have isolated cDNAs encoding the two major electroneutral sodium-chloride transporters present in the mammalian kidney, the bumetanide-sensitive Na(+)-K(+)-Cl- symporter and thiazide-sensitive Na(+)-Cl- cotransporter, and have characterized their functional activity in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Despite their d

Block of potassium outward currents in the crayfish stretch receptor neurons by 4-aminopyridine, tetraethylammonium chloride and some other chemical substances.

The effects of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) and tetraethylammonium (TEA) on the outward potassium currents in the rapidly and slowly adapting stretch receptor neurons (SRNs) of the crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) were studied using a two micro-electrode voltage-clamp technique. The leakage current was not affected by either 4-AP or TEA. External 4-AP blocked the peak outward current in a dose-dependent manner (1:1 stoichiometry) with an apparent dissociation constant (Kd) of 2.3 +/- 0.2 mM (mean +/- SEM) in the slowly and 1.4 +/- 0.2 mM in the rapidly adapting SRN, the block being voltage depend

Severe phlebitis and cutaneous necrosis following peripheral administration of high-concentration potassium chloride: A case report and vascular access management implications.

Electrolyte imbalance management is crucial in diverse clinical scenarios, with intravenous potassium repletion often required. High-concentration infusions can pose severe complications if extravasation occurs, leading to phlebitis, local tissue damage, or in severe cases, cutaneous necrosis. This risk is elevated in geriatric patients due to factors like reduced tissue elasticity and sensitivity. We report a case of phlebitis and skin necrosis in an elderly woman after peripheral KCl infusion (6% [800 mmol/L]). A woman in her early 70 s presented with obstructive jaundice and critically low

Plasma Potassium Negatively Correlates With Sodium Chloride Cotransporter Abundance and Phosphorylation in Urinary Extracellular Vesicles From Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease.

AIM: Using urinary extracellular vesicles (uEVs), we have demonstrated the functional 'renal-K switch' mechanism (the WNK-SPAK-NCC pathway) in both healthy subjects and those with primary aldosteronism. The close relationship between blood pressure and CKD has led to the hypothesis that high potassium intake may be reno-protective through the same mechanism. This study used uEVs to evaluate whether plasma potassium negatively correlates with NCC and its phosphorylation (pNCC) in patients with CKD. METHODS: Morning blood and second morning urine were collected on a single occasion between 8 an

Daphnetin Ameliorates the Amyloid β-Induced Alzheimer Disease via Restoring Potassium-Chloride Co-Transporter 2 (KCC2) Ion Channel Functions in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by downregulation of potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily a member 2 (KCNA2) proteins. Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily a member 2 is involved in the regulation of neuronal excitability by restoring neuronal potassium-chloride co-transporter 2 (KCC2) functions. Coumarin derivatives exert neuroprotective effects via upregulation of KCC2 proteins. Daphnetin (DPN; 7,8-dihydroxy coumarin) is a polyphenolic compound known to attenuate cognitive dysfunction. However, the role of DPN in the attenu

Effects of eutrophic water with ammonium chloride, urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium-β-glycerophosphate on Myriophyllum verticillatum and epiphytic bacteria.

With the rapid development of industry and agriculture, excessive nitrogen and phosphorus released into natural surface water have caused eutrophication. Applying submerged plants to manage eutrophic water has attracted widespread attention. However, there are limited studies on the effects of different nitrogen and phosphorus in the water environment on submerged plants and their epiphytic biofilm. Therefore, this paper investigated the effects of eutrophic water with ammonium chloride (IN), urea (ON), potassium dihydrogen phosphate (IP), and sodium-β-glycerophosphate (OP) on Myriophyllum ver

[The use of oral potassium chloride (BS 560) in the treatment of mixed acid-base imbalance in patients with chronic broncho-pulmonary diseases].

The Authors, after giving an outline of metabolic alterations on acid-base balance in chronic obstructive lung disease, describe the need of correction of electrolytic umbalance, signally in relationship to metabolic alkalosis dued to hypochloremia. The Authors emphasize the importance of correction of jonic balance during long term therapy in such patients, especially diuretic and steroid long term treatment. The Authors studied the comparative effects on jonic assessment by correction with potassium chloride e.v. and potassium chloride by oral administration with a new capsulate preparation,…

Mitigating electrolyte measurement discrepancies in high triglycerides samples: a comparative analysis of direct and indirect ISE for sodium, potassium and chloride measurements.

Elevated triglyceride (TG) levels, common in hypertriglyceridemia, can significantly interfere with electrolyte analysis, particularly by the indirect ion-selective electrode (ISE) method. However, comprehensive data on the concentration-dependent measurement differences for potassium, sodium and chloride, along with validated corrective algorithms, are lacking. This study assessed the discrepancies in these electrolytes between direct and indirect ISE methods in serum samples with high TGs, while developing correction formulas for the indirect ISE. A total of 154 serum samples with high TGs a

Potassium and ANO1/ TMEM16A chloride channel profiles distinguish atypical and typical smooth muscle cells from interstitial cells in the mouse renal pelvis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although atypical smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the proximal renal pelvis are thought to generate the pacemaker signals that drive pyeloureteric peristalsis, their location and electrical properties remain obscure. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Standard patch clamp, intracellular microelectrode and immunohistochemistry techniques were used. To unequivocally identify SMCs, transgenic mice with enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (eYFP) expressed in cells containing α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were sometimes used. KEY RESULTS: Atypical SMCs were distinguished from typical SM
