There are limited reports of the prevalence of positive reactions in healthy adults to patch tests with standard allergens; there are no recent comprehensive studies from Australia. Healthy adult volunteers (n = 219) from the Western Australian community were patch tested using the European standard series of allergens. 542 patients (330 women, 212 men) with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested to standard series allergens between January 1983 and June 1987. The present study was undertaken to determine the infectivity of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts for immunosuppressed adult C57BL/6N mice after the oocysts had been stored from 1-48 months at 4 degrees C in 2.5% potassium dichromate. A standard patch test series was tested for 7 years (1977-1983) in a total of 11,962 patients. Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic inflammatory disease among children in industrialised countries. Many factors influence this disease in a negative way and contact allergy is one such factor.
