This paper reviews our institutional experience in the management of rhino-facial entomophthoromycosis, a rare subcutaneous fungal infection. A patient with primary pulmonary sporotrichosis with infiltration and cavitation is reported. Treatment for one year with potassium iodide resulted in marked resolution of the inflammatory lesions but persistent cavitation and fungal infection. Cure followed bisegmental lung resection with no recurrence during eight-year follow-up. Excellent results are reported in 10 patients treated by resection despite less then optimal preoperative iodide therapy. Surgical treatment of primary sporotrichosis with cavitation is indicated and should be unattended by complications or recurrence.

A new carbon paste electrode (CPE) for the determination of iodide ion based on a cetyltrimethylammonium iodide (CTMAI) ion pair as an electroactive material is described. The electrode shows a linear response for iodide ion over the concentration range of 4 x 10(-5) M to 1 x 10(-1) M with a lower detection limit of 4 x 10(-5) M at 25 degrees C. Necrotizing panniculitis due to potassium-bromide is a drug induced allergic reaction following stimulation of lymphocytes as demonstrated for the first time by a lymphocyte transformation test (LTT). We named the disease "halogen panniculitis" because of similar generally known reactions to iodides and describe the typical symptoms in three own cases. Bromoderma tuberosum tends to be a similar kind of allergy. A case of nasofacial zygomycosis in a 64-year-old female patient from Barcarena, State of Pará, is reported. This is the second time that the disease is recognized in Northern Brazil. The diagnosis was initially suspected by the direct observation of broad coenocytic hyphae in biopsy specimens of the nasal cavity mucosa. Later, the cause of the disease was confirmed by the mycologial and histopathological findings.
