BACKGROUND: Target organ damage is crucial for hypertension risk stratification. However, the lack of sensitive assessment tools for early target organ damage in the presence of elevated blood pressure limits timely intervention. This study used the retina to investigate subclinical neurovascular damage and identify early imaging biomarkers.
METHODS: We monitored male spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar-Kyoto controls weekly from 4 to 9 weeks of age. Weekly assessments included noninvasive blood pressure and multimodal fundus imaging, including optical coherence tomography, optical coh

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aims to examine the correlation between Serum Uric Acid (SUA) and Carotid Artery Plaque (CAP) in Ischaemic S … CAP risk increased with SUA levels increment for Hypertension (HTN) patients and under-60-year-old prehypertension patients (P < 0.05). The Area under the ROC curve values were all greater than 0.7 (P < 0.01). Furthermore, based on sex stratification, the SUA-CAP relationship could be more significant in males. However, in normal BP patients, there appears to be …

INTRODUCTION: Studies disagree as to whether there is a greater prevalence of hypertension among HIV/AIDS patients and the role of antiretroviral therapy.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the prevalence of hypertension and risk factors in a cohort of HIV-infected patients, with emphasis on antiretroviral therapy.
METHOD: Case-control study conducted at baseline of a cohort, between June/2007 and December/2008 in Pernambuco/Brazil. Blood pressure was classified as normal, prehypertension, and hypertension.
RESULTS: Of 958 patients, 245 (25.6%) had hypertension (cases), 325 (33.9%) had prehypertension, an…

Primary aldosteronism (PA) secondary to excessive and/or autonomous aldosterone secretion from the renin-angiotensin system accounts for ∼10% of cases of hypertension and is primarily caused by bilateral adrenal hyperplasia (BAH) or aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs). Although the diagnosis has traditionally been supported by low serum potassium levels, normokalaemic and even normotensive forms of PA have been identified expanding further the clinical phenotype. Moreover, recent evidence has shown that serum aldosterone correlates with increased blood pressure (BP) in the general population

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between the source of dietary fat and blood pressure for Chinese people aged between 30-59 with the aim of elucidating methods of hypertension prevention.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study using national survey data.
PARTICIPANTS: 1,104 adults aged between 30-59 with normal blood pressures in 2006 were included in the study. Adults with history of prehypertension, hypertension, or were taking hypertension drugs in 2006 were excluded. Participants with implausibly high or low daily total energy intakes (<600 kcal/d or >5000 kcal/d) were excluded. Preg…

Hypertension is the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor underlying atrial fibrillation and is present in up to 40% of patients with atrial fibrillation. Furthermore, attributable risk studies have shown that a history of hypertension contributes to up to 24% of incident atrial fibrillation. New data suggest that even early forms of hypertension (prehypertension and aortic stiffness) are associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation development. Hypertension and prehypertension are therefore critical mediators for the development of atrial fibrillation. Mechanisms for the assoc…

OBJECTIVE: Immune system abnormalities have been linked to hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). The goal of our study was to examine different lymphocyte subpopulations in the prehypertensive and developmental phases of hypertension in the SHR.
DESIGN: Blood samples were obtained from SHR and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats at the following time-points: 2 weeks and 1, 2, 3 and 4 months. Lymphocytes were separated from the whole blood.
METHODS: Monoclonal antibodies were used to fluorescently label the following lymphocyte subpopulations; total T cells, T non-helper cells, T help

AIM: The association between prehypertension (pre-HTN) and abnormal left ventricular (LV) geometric patterns is unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of echocardiographic studies aimed to provide a new piece of information on LV geometric alterations in untreated pre-HTN individuals.
DESIGN: Studies were identified by crossing the following search terms: 'prehypertension,' 'high normal blood pressure,' 'heart,' 'LV hypertrophy' (LVH), 'LV geometry,' 'LV mass,' and 'echocardiography.'
RESULTS: A total 60 949 participants (38 536 normotensive, 14 453 pre-HTN, and 7960 HTN individuals) were inc…

UNLABELLED: Heightened sympathetic outflow is a major contributor to the development of hypertension. The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) are critical regions for generating and regulating sympathetic activity associated with hypertension. Although presympathetic neural circuitry in the healthy brain is well characterized, it remains unclear whether these pathways undergo alterations in hypertension. Here, we determined presympathetic neural circuits by injecting pseudorabies virus (PRV), a transsynaptic retrograde tracer, into the adrena

The Dahl salt-sensitive rat (DS) is a model of genetically determined arterial hypertension exacerbated by dietary salt. We report two additional abnormalities of DS rats, which are both genetically determined and enhanced by salt: 1) immunoglobulin disorders and 2) renal dysfunctions. These abnormalities precede and are not the result of the arterial hypertension. In young, prehypertensive DS rats the plasma and tissue concentrations of immunoglobulin (Ig) G, but not of IgM or IgA, are decreased compared with those of the salt-resistant strain (DR). A high-salt diet (8.0% NaCl) decreases the

Casein-derived peptides have been shown to reduce blood pressure in animal studies, but evidence from human trials remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the antihypertensive effect and possible mechanisms of a hydrolyzed casein peptide tablet containing GPFPIIV and FFVAPFPEVFGK (HCP-C7C12) in prehypertensive/hypertensive patients. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 131 participants were recruited and randomly allocated to either the test product group (HCP) taking tablets containing HCP-C7C12 or the placebo group for an eight-week intervention. 114

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the brain circumventricular subfornical organ (SFO) mediate the central hypertensive actions of Angiotensin II (ANG II). However, the downstream signaling events remain unclear. Here we tested the hypothesis that angiotensin type 1a receptors (AT1aR), ER stress, and ROS induce activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) during ANG II-dependent hypertension. To spatiotemporally track NF-κB activity in the SFO throughout the development of ANG II-dependent hypertension, we used SFO-targeted ade

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between maternal blood pressures throughout pregnancy and the risk of delivering a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonate.
METHODS: Women were prospectively enrolled at 9-14 weeks and had serial blood pressure measurements throughout pregnancy. SGA prevalence was compared to maternal blood pressure at enrollment, average blood pressure during each trimester, and blood pressure trends throughout gestation. Blood pressure was categorized as normotension, prehypertension, or hypertension using Joint National Committee on Hypertension-7 (JNC-7) definition…
