Antilipopolysaccharide improves survival in primates subjected to heat stroke.

Recent investigations have suggested that endotoxins or lipopolysaccharides (LPS) may play a role in heat stroke pathophysiology. In this study we wish to investigate whether prophylactic administration of anti-LPS hyperimmune plasma improves survival of experimental heat stroke in primates. Eleven monkeys were anesthetised and heat-stressed to a rectal temperature of 43.5 degrees C (group A) and then allowed to recover at room temperature. Five had received a prophylactic i.v. dose of equine anti-LPS (experimental group), while the other six (control group) received an equivalent i.v. dose of…

The integration of dominance and social bonding in primates.

Social dominance is usually viewed from the perspective of intragroup competition over access to limited resources. The present paper, while … e, aggression becomes a well-integrated, even constructive component of social life. In some higher primates this process of integration has reached the stage where status differences are strongly attenuated. In these species, sharing and trading can take the place of overt competition. The views underlying this "reconciled hierarchy" model are only partly …

Cross-protection in nonhuman primates against Argentine hemorrhagic fever.

The susceptibility of the marmoset Callithrix jacchus to Tacaribe virus infection was investigated to perform cross-protection studies between Junin and Tacaribe viruses. Five marmosets inoculated with Tacaribe virus failed to show any signs of disease, any alterations in erythrocyte, leukocyte, reticulocyte, and platelet counts or any changes in hematocrit or hemoglobin values. No Tacaribe virus could be recovered from blood at any time postinfection. Anti-Tacaribe neutralizing antibodies appeared 3 weeks postinfection. The five Tacaribe-infected marmosets and four noninfected controls were c

Poxvirus in West African nonhuman primates: serological survey results.

Ten species of nonhuman primates in West African habitat were analysed for variolavaccinia subgroup haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) and neutralization antibodies. The animals were taken in 27 different sampling zones in parts of the Ivory Coast, Mali, and Upper Volta. Of the 195 tested, 15 (8%) had elevated HI antibodies after nonspecific reactions were reduced with potassium periodate pretreatment. Positive neutralization antibodies were found in 21% (44 of 206). Antibodies were detected in serum from monkeys living near two areas where monkeypox cases in humans had occurred. Four samples w…

Monitoring resuscitation of primates from hemorrhagic and septic shock.

Monitoring data in 16 primates subjected to septic or hemorrhagic shock and resuscitated with various solutions is presented. From a paractical standpoint, central venous pressure and urine output appear to be the best indices to use in the emergency department for resuscitation of the shock victim. The sophisticated measurements such as cardiac output, thermodye volumes, pulmonary artery wedge pressure and oxygen consumption should be reserved for the individual with depressed cardiovascular reserves and who needs "fine tuning" of his volume status.

Evaluation of narcotic and narcotic antagonist interactions in primates.

Multiple and single drug interactions were studied in morphine-dependent monkeys whose dependency was maintained by self-infusion. Naloxone, naltrexone, and cyclazocine precipitated abstinence syndrome which the animals generally controlled with increased morphine intake. Methadone and L-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM) initially reduced, then increased, the morphine intake. Multiple interactions were studied using ethanol, seconal, diazepam, amphetamine, and diphenylhydantoin.

Outbreaks of monkeypox and serological surveys in nonhuman primates.

In connexion with the recent detection of cases of monkeypox in man in West and Central Africa, the frequency of monkeypox outbreaks in monkeys since 1958, when the disease was first recognized in captive animals, has been investigated. Special incidence surveys were made for this purpose. During the last 3 years, a serological survey has been conducted to find natural foci of monkeypox virus, and a total of 2 242 sera from monkeys of different species from various parts of Africa and Asia have been examined for poxvirus antibodies. The survey failed to detect any significant indication of pox

Neurotensin drives theca cell migration during ovulation in primates†.

Theca cells are a critical steroidogenic cell type of the ovarian follicle and corpus luteum. The ovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surge (or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)) stimulates theca cell relocation from the stroma surrounding the dominant follicle to full integration into the developing corpus luteum. Luteinizing hormone/human chorionic gonadotropin also stimulates granulosa cells to produce local mediators of ovulation, including the peptide neurotensin (NTS). To determine if hCG-stimulated NTS regulates theca cell relocation within the ovulatory follicle, vehicle or an NTS rece

Comparison of the Distribution of Fitness Effects Across Primates.

The distribution of fitness effects (DFE) of mutations is a key determinant of both the efficacy of natural selection and the genetic load of populations. It also provides an indirect summary of the underlying fitness landscape, so the extent to which the DFE is conserved across species is informative about the invariance of those landscapes. Here, we infer the DFE of amino-acid--changing mutations in 38 catarrhine subspecies using site-frequency spectrum (SFS)--based methods. We find that effective population size (Ne) is the dominant axis of cross-species variation in the population-scaled D

Exploring gastrointestinal helminth infections in Amazonian non-human primates.

Although gastrointestinal helminths have a high prevalence in non-human primates (NHPs), there is still a large lack of knowledge about their interactions with climate-driven seasonal patterns, particularly in tropical rainforests. Using gastrointestinal dissections from 11 free-ranging NHP species (N = 190 individuals) donated by indigenous subsistence hunters, we investigated gastrointestinal helminth infections in two areas in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Helminth richness included seven nematodes, two cestodes, and one acanthocephala. Parasites were detected in 85.3% of NHPs, with the…

Estrogen regulates placental immune processes in non-human primates†.

The placenta is a crucial organ for sustaining pregnancy through nutrient exchange, hormone production, and immune modulation. Estrogen is an important modulator of immune function in pregnancy. This study investigates estrogen's effect on placental immune cell expression and whether there are sex-specific differences in an established non-human primate model of estrogen depletion. Pregnant baboons were assigned to three groups: untreated (n = 8), treated with the aromatase inhibitor letrozole (n = 8, 115 μg/kg/day) from days 100 to 165 of gestation, and treated with letrozole plus estradiol b

Genetically engineered pig heart transplantation in non-human primates.

BACKGROUND: Improvement in gene modifications of donor pigs has led to the prevention of early cardiac xenograft rejection and significantly prolonged cardiac xenograft survival in both heterotopic and orthotopic preclinical non-human primate (NHP) models. This progress formed the basis for FDA approval for compassionate use transplants in two patients. METHODS: Based on our earlier report of 9-month survival of seven gene-edited (7-GE) hearts transplanted (life-supporting orthotopic) in baboons, we transplanted 10 gene-edited pig hearts into baboons (n = 4) using non-ischemic continuous perf

Basicranial evidence suggests picrodontid mammals are not stem primates.

The Picrodontidae from the middle Palaeocene of North America are enigmatic placental mammals that were allied with various mammalian groups … dae. Results of cladistic analyses incorporating these novel data suggest picrodontids are not stem primates nor euarchontan mammals and that the proposed dental synapomorphies uniting picrodontids with plesiadapiforms and, by extension, primates evolved independently. Results highlight the need to scrutinize proposed synapomorphies of highly autapomorphic …

Structural and Cognitive Mechanisms of Group Cohesion in Primates.

Living in groups is more stressful and less straightforward than we usually assume. In order to live in large groups, mammals need to find solutions that allow these stresses to be defused. I show that, in primates, this has involved successively adding increasingly costly structural, behavioural, and cognitive solutions that are dependent on the evolution of large brains. Primate social evolution consists of a series of glass ceilings on group size that restrict the habitats that species could occupy. Group-living creates stresses that, all else equal, naturally lead to group fragmentation, a…

Landscape drives zoonotic malaria prevalence in non-human primates.

Zoonotic disease dynamics in wildlife hosts are rarely quantified at macroecological scales due to the lack of systematic surveys. Non-human primates (NHPs) host Plasmodium knowlesi, a zoonotic malaria of public health concern and the main barrier to malaria elimination in Southeast Asia. Understanding of regional P. knowlesi infection dynamics in wildlife is limited. Here, we systematically assemble reports of NHP P. knowlesi and investigate geographic determinants of prevalence in reservoir species. Meta-analysis of 6322 NHPs from 148 sites reveals that prevalence is heterogeneous across Sou…

Neuromelanin accumulation drives endogenous synucleinopathy in non-human primates.

Although neuromelanin is a dark pigment characteristic of dopaminergic neurons in the human substantia nigra pars compacta, its potential role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) has often been neglected since most commonly used laboratory animals lack neuromelanin. Here we took advantage of adeno-associated viral vectors encoding the human tyrosinase gene for triggering a time-dependent neuromelanin accumulation within substantia nigra pars compacta dopaminergic neurons in macaques up to similar levels of pigmentation as observed in elderly humans. Furthermore, neuromelanin accumu
