Intraosseous xanthoma simultaneously treated with mandibular prognathism using sagittal split ramus osteotomy in the mandible: a case report and literature review.

Xanthomas are benign lesions characterized by the aggregation of lipid-laden histiocytes and foamy cells within tissues. Intraosseous xanthomas (IOXs), especially those in the jaw bone, are rare, with only around 50 cases documented. This case report describes an IOX located at an osteotomy site in the mandible during sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). Preoperative radiographs revealed a heterogenic radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in the right ramus. After meticulous curettage of the lesion, proximal and distal segments were fixed in the semi-rigid plates and screws. At the one-year followup

Three-dimensional region-based study on the relationship between soft and hard tissue changes after orthognathic surgery in patients with prognathism.

Both deep understanding and reliable prediction of postoperative soft tissue changes are crucial for planning orthognathic surgery. Instead … d tissue movements. An overall pattern of facial soft tissue movement was observed in patients with prognathism who underwent orthognathic surgery. The experiment results have shown that mean ratios for the average soft-to-hard tissue movements in the facial regions varied, which may not exactly be similar to the published reports because of the population bi …

Influence of maxillary clockwise rotation with posterior impaction and mandibular setback by SSRO or IVRO for mandibular prognathism on volume change in upper airway.

PURPOSE: In orthognathic surgery for skeletal mandibular prognathism, maxillary clockwise rotation with posterior impaction and mandibular setback is often performed. Change in airway volume after orthognathic surgery is one of the concerns. The present study was performed to evaluate the effects of maxillary clockwise rotation with posterior impaction and the influence of different mandibular techniques, including sagittal splitting ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), on upper airway volume changes before and after bimaxillary surgery for mandibular prognathi…

Orthognathic correction and corticobasal implant-supported prostheses as a treatment modality for partial edentulism with mandibular prognathism: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular prognathism manifests as elongation of the mandible in the anteroposterior direction, resulting in a sunken appearance of the middle third of the face and sad look of the eyes. It adversely affects esthetics, function, and oral health, reducing the patients' self-esteem. It therefore presents a significant challenge. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 23-year-old woman presented with prognathic features characterized by mandibular protrusion, maxillary retrusion, a prominent chin, and reduce self-esteem. Intraoral examination revealed multiple extracted teeth, severe fracture of…

3D evaluation of the morphological and volumetric changes of the tongue and oral cavity before and after orthognathic surgery for mandibular prognathism: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: The volumetric ratio of the tongue to the oral cavity has been recognized to be one of the important factors for the maintenance of stable occlusion. Oral cavity capacity is changed after orthognathic surgery in patients with mandibular prognathism; however, the volumetric changes of the oral cavity including the tongue before and after surgery have not been analyzed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphological and volumetric changes of the tongue and oral cavity following orthognathic surgery using a newly developed vinyl polysiloxane impression method. MATERIALS …

Whole-exome sequencing in a Japanese pedigree implicates a rare non-synonymous single-nucleotide variant in BEST3 as a candidate for mandibular prognathism.

Mandibular prognathism is a phenotype of facial deformity seen in populations around the world, but with higher incidence among East Asian populations. Five genome-wide nonparametric linkage analyses and a genome-wide association study to identify susceptibility loci of the phenotype have shown inconsistent results. To explore variants related to mandibular prognathism, we undertook whole-exome sequencing in a Japanese pedigree. The pedigree was ascertained as mandibular prognathism. The pedigree comprised 15 individuals from 4 generations. Four affected individuals across 2 generations and 5 …

Implant Treatment after Sagittal Splitting Ramus Osteotomy and Alveolar Ridge Augmentation in Patient with Mandibular Prognathism and Multiple Missing Maxillary Teeth.

An abnormal maxillomandibular ridge relationship frequently hinders oral implant treatment in patients with jaw deformities. Here, we describe a patient who was experiencing difficulty using dentures due to multiple maxillary tooth loss and mandibular prognathism. Treatment comprising sagittal splitting ramus osteotomy and alveolar ridge augmentation using bone grafts harvested from the mandibular ramus followed by implant treatment yielded good outcomes. The patient was a 47-year-old woman presenting with an unstable upper partial denture. Although prior prosthetic treatment for mandibular pr…

Maxillary Expansion and Mandibular Setback Surgery With and Without Mandibular Anterior Segment Osteotomy to Correct Mandibular Prognathism With Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Mandibular prognathism is usually treated with mandibular setback surgery. However, this approach reduces the pharyngeal airway space, and can aggravate obstructive phenomena in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). While maxillary expansion is known to lead to an increase in the pharyngeal airway volume (PAS), its effect on the PAS in mandibular setback surgery has not yet been reported. The authors report a surgical approach with maxillary expansion in 2 patients with mandibular prognathism that was accompanied by OSA: maxillary midsagittal expansion with minimum maxillary advancement…

Strategic camouflage treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion (mandibular prognathism) using bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular anterior subapical osteotomy.

This case report presents the camouflage treatment that successfully improved the facial profile of a patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion using bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular anterior subapical osteotomy. The patient was an 18-year-old woman with chief complaints of crooked teeth and a protruded jaw. Camouflage treatment was chosen because she rejected orthognathic surgery under general anesthesia. A hybrid type of bone-borne rapid maxillary expander with palatal mini-implants was used to correct the transverse discrepancy, and a mandibular anterior subapical os
