Between April, 1980 and August, 1985, 240 patients were operated on for localised or generalised intraabdominal infection and in addition received anti-microbial therapy. Thirty-one patients were treated with latamoxef, 33 with ceftazidime, 20 with ceftriaxone, 47 with imipenem/cilastatin, and 109 with a combination of aminoglycosides and clindamycin (control group). The indications for surgery included: post operative peritonitis; gall bladder empyema; perforated gastroduodenal ulcer; perforation of the small intestine with or without ileus; perforated appendicitis; perforation of the colon.

Considerable controversy surrounds the subject of tympanoplasty in children. This prospective study looked at the results of type-I tympanoplasty in children. Forty-five children in the age group of five to 14 years were selected for the study. All these cases had a central perforation without any evidence of cholesteatoma. Gestational thrombocytopenia (GT) is commonly observed in pregnancies with otherwise limited obstetric and hematologic complications. However, few data are available on the natural history of the disease, and on the recurrence of thrombocytopenia in subsequent pregnancies. We studied 20 patients with acute optic neuritis prospectively for 12 months. Visual fields, color vision, and VEPs to 15' checks were initially abnormal in all patients. Visual acuity was abnormal in 90% and contrast sensitivity in 95% of patients. We devised a graded visual impairment scale (GVIS) to include all visual functions tested. Complete recovery of visual function occurred in 65% of cases. Recovery in the majority of patients was rapid and complete within the first 2 months. Of 61 cases of ibuprofen overdosage reported consecutively to the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center from September 1985 through April 1986, 16 were excluded because of incomplete follow-up or concurrent medication ingestion. A toxic reaction developed in 7 (16%) of the remaining 45 patients. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, mild central nervous system depression, coma, tachycardia, apnea, metabolic acidosis with or without respiratory alkalosis, hematemesis, and oliguric renal failure were noted. The frequency with which polyneuropathy developed was investigated in patients with cancer of the larynx and pharynx who participated in a double-blind trial of the radiosensitizing drug misonidazole. Fourteen of 36 patients receiving misonidazole (total dose of about 11 g/m2) developed neuropathy, while this occurred in only 2 of 34 patients in the placebo group. A prospective study of all patients (15 years and over) admitted to acute medical beds at a medium sized general hospital was carried out. This prospective study confirms that patellofemoral pain arises predominantly in a young population and is more common in females. Patellar malalignment and its progression to patellar subluxation can be managed conservatively with improvement in the majority of cases. Arthroscopic lateral release may be necessary for selected patients with patellar malalignment and subluxation, while more aggressive surgical therapy should be considered in patients with patellar compression syndrome and recurrent dislocation. If the relationship is causal it may be possible to identify a time sequence between coitus, penetration of bacteria through the mucous plug in the cervix, the development of infection in the extraplacental membranes near the cervical os, spread of the infection to the amniotic fluid and complications of the infection. A one-year prospective study of mandibular fractures that included 253 consecutive patients with 422 mandibular fractures was completed at Charity Hospital, New Orleans.
