BACKGROUND: Neurosyphilis is caused by the invasion of Treponema pallidum into the central nervous system. General paresis (GP) is a type of neurosyphilis. The main manifestation of general paresis is dementia; however, this is different from the other types of dementia, which can be cured by adequate doses of penicillin in the early stage. Neurosyphilis is the "great imitator" because it can mimic many types of medical disorders. In addition, the manifestations of neurosyphilis are not typical. Psychiatric disorders as a cause of general paresis have become more common due to the use of antib

Dr. Haakon Sæthre was a leader of Norwegian neurology and psychiatry. He was resourceful, compassionate and had immense pride in his independent homeland. He described Sæthre-Chotzen syndrome (acrocephalosyndactyly type III). When Nazi Germany occupied Norway during World War II, Sæthre fearlessly and actively resisted, from revoking his medical association membership, to hiding persecuted Jews as patients in his psychiatric ward and aiding in their escape to Sweden, to managing the largest "illegal" food warehouse in Oslo with Danish humanitarian aid. As a prominent and noticeable citizen, he

A preliminary and retrospective review--with a southern perspective--of some traveller's pathologies, mostly imported, and leading to hospital admission in Guadeloupe (FWI). End stage patients (cancer, AIDS...) frequently travel for a last, "compassional" trip. Ischemic heart disease is the leading pathology imported from the mother country (France). As well as in diabetes or psychiatric illness, destabilization frequently occurs as a consequence of travel (jet lag). Compulsive tennis plus dehydration cause the very common stone passage of nephrolithiasis. Concern is growing for heroin withdra

Most efforts to care for children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS have been geared toward handling their physical health needs disregarding their mental health burden, including suicidality and mental health-seeking behaviour. We aimed to determine rates of psychiatric disorders, suicidal tendencies, and health-seeking behaviour among a group of children and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS in Enugu, Nigeria. A total of 288 children and adolescents aged 9-19 years living with HIV/AIDS in four health facilities providing antiretroviral therapy (ART) services were studied. The questionnaire was ad

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the diagnostic trajectories following a first psychiatric diagnosis in childhood or adolescence. Such knowledge could aid clinicians in treatment, risk prediction, and psychoeducation. This study presents a comprehensive nationwide overview of diagnostic trajectories in children and adolescents after their first diagnosis in child and adolescent psychiatric hospitals.
METHODS: Patients aged 0 to 17 years who received their first psychiatric diagnosis between January 1996 and December 2011 were identified through the Danish National Patient Registries. Shifts

OBJECTIVE: Research on the role psychiatric factors in HIV disease management has yielded discrepant findings, possibly because prior studies did not include comprehensive psychiatric screeners. This study administered a validated screener to examine psychiatric correlates of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) utilization and viral load.
DESIGN: Community-recruited, HIV-positive impoverished persons provided sociodemographic information, completed a Diagnostic Interview Schedule that screened for psychiatric disorders, and provided a blood sample to measure HIV disease markers.

Mental health services in low income countries are inadequate. Health care delivery services in these countries are mainly focused on vector-borne diseases and HIV/AIDS. To make the situation worse, trained health workers are leaving developing countries for higher paying jobs elsewhere; this "brain drain" is robbing countries of their energetic and highly trained manpower. In response to this dire situation, Ethiopia started a psychiatric nursing training program where by nurses are trained and assigned to different parts of the country as mental health workers. Their activities range from pr

The objective was to explore psychiatric disorders as potential predictors of sleep duration. A cross-sectional survey study with a probability sample of residents of a northern German area was carried out. There were 4075 study participants, aged 18--64 years, with a participation rate of 70.2%. Face-to-face in-home computer-aided interviews (Composite International Diagnostic Interview) provided diagnoses of nicotine and alcohol dependence, alcohol abuse, depressive, anxiety and somatoform disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (D

A 32-year-old woman with maple syrup urine disease presented with recurring episodes with hypoglycaemia and cerebral seizures. In most cases a connection to the inborn metabolic disorder is assumed, resulting in symptomatic treatment. Due to these treatments invasive procedures are required. This leads to prescriptions of multiple medications and medical aids. After 2 years of unexplained symptoms a routine examination led to the diagnosis of factitious disorder. The patient received the offer for psychiatric/psychotherapeutic treatment. Further prognosis remains uncertain.

The emotional impact of acne is influenced by numerous factors including age, psychosocial factors, severity of disease, social and familial networks and patient specific personalities. Adolescents are an emotionally vulnerable population, and acne can significantly burden their psychological resources. Looking beyond the physical manifestations of acne can add valuable clinical information aiding clinicians in choosing the most beneficial treatment regimens. Patients at high risk for psychological and/or physical harm can in need of psychiatric referral can also be better recognized.

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric disorders present a substantial global public health burden with limited drug options. The gut-brain axis connects inflammatory bowel diseases and psychiatric disorders, which often have comorbidities. While some evidence hints at anti-inflammatory drugs aiding in treating psychiatric conditions, the specific effects of intestinal anti-inflammatory drugs remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the causal effect of intestinal anti-inflammatory drug targets on psychiatric disorders. We hypothesize that these drug targets may offer new insights into the trea

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are common in adults with ADHD and may be bidirectionally associated with ADHD severity and other psychiatric symptoms. We investigated the prevalence of positive screenings for various sleep disorders, and their association with psychiatric comorbidities in a large sample of adults with ADHD from a specialized outpatient clinic.
METHODS: We included data of 3,691 adult patients diagnosed with ADHD, who had filled out a screener for sleep disorders (Holland Sleep Disorders Questionnaire (HSDQ)) as part of routine diagnostic assessment. The HSDQ screens for the sleep

Disaster mental health research has found that psychological casualties from a given disaster can be expected to far outnumber physical casualties. Amidst a shortage of mental health professionals and against the backdrop of natural disasters, continued terrorism, and pandemic influenza, there is a striking need to expand and operationalize available human resources to enhance the psychological resiliency of those affected. Through the utilization of psychological first aid (PFA) as an early crisis intervention tool, and by virtue of their occupation and experience, nurses are particularly wel

Anxiety and depression are common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) that significantly affect patients' quality of life. In recent years, our understanding of PD has advanced through multifaceted studies on the pathological mechanisms associated with anxiety and depression in PD. These classic psychiatric symptoms involve complex pathophysiology, with both distinct features and connections to the mechanisms underlying the aetiology of PD. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of anxiety and depression in PD blurs the boundaries between them. Therefore, a comprehensive summary of the path

This study was performed in the psychiatric emergency unit of René-Dubos General Hospital (Pontoise, France). Two cases of female patients with motor deficiencies suggesting a diagnosis of conversion disorder because of preceding psychological stressors and lability of symptoms, are presented. In both cases, the diagnosis was reconsidered after the use of RMI for multiple sclerosis in one case, HIV related encephalopathy in the other. Recent studies have shown that organic diseases with a psychiatric presentation represent 1,2 to 4% of patients examined in emergency setting. Criteria for the d
