Diversity and species composition of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a Venezuelan urban focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The present study examined the spatial and temporal abundance and diversity of phlebotomine sand flies in an area of Venezuela that is an ancient focus of leishmaniasis. The study was conducted in 6 stations in urban localities in Trujillo City, located in northwestern Venezuela (9 degrees 22' 24" N, 70 degrees 26' 08" W), which is located in a mountain range in the Andean ecoregion (altitude = 600-1,010 m). During 1995-99, entomological surveys were conducted after and before the rainy season. Shannon light traps were operated from 1800 to 2000 h in peridomestic site trap locations. Twelve sp

A non-destructive image-based approach to quantify blood meal size in Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies are hematophagous vectors of major human pathogens, including Leishmania spp., with blood ingestion essential for reproduction and vector competence. Accurate quantification of blood meal volume is crucial for understanding physiological processes and transmission dynamics. OBJECTIVES: Here, we introduce a novel, non-destructive image-based method to estimate blood intake in Lutzomyia longipalpis, the principal vector of Leishmania infantum in the Americas. METHODS: High-resolution images of unfed and blood-fed females were analysed using Fiji ImageJ (open

Presence of Putative Male-Produced Sex Pheromone in Lutzomyia cruciata (Diptera: Psychodidae), Vector of Leishmania mexicana.

Lutzomyia cruciata (Coquillet) is a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Mexico and Central America. However, several aspects of its ecology and behavior are unknown, including whether a male pheromone partially mediates the sexual behavior of this sand fly. In this study, we evaluated the behavioral response of females to male abdominal extracts in a Y-tube olfactometer. The volatile compounds from male abdominal extracts were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and compared with those of female abdominal extracts. Finally, the disseminating structures of the putative sex phero

American visceral leishmaniasis dissociated from Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera, Psychodidae) in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil.

The occurrence of American visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil has always been associated with the presence of the Lutzomyia longipalpis vector. The geographic distribution of this vector in this state is related to the presence of specific geoclimatic characteristics, such as a dry climate, low elevations (< 450 m), steep slopes and rocky outcrops. The occurrence of human autochthonous cases of American visceral leishmaniasis in municipalities without these geoclimatic characteristics justifies the present study and our main goal was to test the association between t

Identification of the sex pheromone of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Asunción, Paraguay.

The sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of Leishmania (L.) infantum (Nicolle), the causative agent of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in the New World. Male Lu. longipalpis have secretory glands which produce sex pheromones in either abdominal tergites 4 or 3 and 4. These glands are sites of sex pheromone production and each pheromone type may represent true sibling species. In Latin America, apart from Lu. pseudolongipalpis Arrivillaga and Feliciangeli from Venezuela, populations of Lu. longipalpis s.l. can be identified by their male-produced sex pheromones: (S)-9-methylg

Life cycle of Leishmania major (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) in the neotropical sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

The development of Leishmania major Yakimoff & Schokhor in the New World sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) was examined by light and electron microscopy. In this unnatural host, parasites differentiated into 10 typical morphological forms, multiplied at three sites, migrated anteriorly and established in the foregut, and attached to gut surfaces. In the blood meal, amastigotes divided and transformed into two successive dividing, stumpy promastigote stages. Elongate nectomonad promastigotes developed from stumpy forms and subsequently rounded up in some flies into paramastigotes an

Leishmania infantum MON-98 isolated from naturally infected Phlebotomus langeroni (Diptera: Psychodidae) in El Agamy, Egypt.

Leishmania infantum zymodeme MON-98 was isolated in El Agamy, Egypt. A total of 15 (1.07%) Leishmania-like infections in the anterior midgut and in the head was found in 1,405 Phlebotomus langeroni (Nitzulescu); none of 1,785 Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) was found infected. Four of the 15 cultures (26.7%) were indistinguishable from a reference L. infantum MON-98 strain using cellulose acetate electrophoresis. The isolation and identification of L. infantum MON-98 from naturally infected P. langeroni confirms that this species of sand fly is the vector of visceral leishmaniasis in El Agamy.

An integrative taxonomic approach reveals two putatively novel species of phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The subfamily Phlebotominae comprises 1028 species of sand fly, of which only 90 are recognized as vectors of pathogenic agents such as Trypanosoma, Leishmania, and Bartonella. In Thailand, leishmaniasis-a sand fly-borne disease-is currently endemic, with 36 documented sand fly species. However, many cryptic species likely remain unidentified. To improve our understanding of the distribution, habitat preferences, and role in disease transmission of these sand flies, further research is necessary. METHODS: Sand flies were collected using CDC light traps from 13 locations across fou

Toxicity of Citrus sinensis essential oil on Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Essential oils (OEs) have emerged as an increasingly promising alternative for vector control to replace synthetic insecticides. This work aimed to evaluate the toxicity of essential oil from Citrus sinensis (pear orange) peels on sand flies of the species Lutzomyia longipalpis. The insects were exposed to different concentrations of the essential oil (100, 200, and 400 mg mL-1), and the survival rate after exposure was evaluated. The chemical characterization of the essential oil was carried out using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The res

Genetic diversity and phylogeography of Phlebotomus argentipes (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae), using COI and ND4 mitochondrial gene sequences.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus argentipes complex is the primary vector for cutaneous leishmaniasis, a burgeoning health concern in contemporary Sri Lanka, where effective vector control is important for proper disease management. Understanding the genetic diversity of the P. argentipes population in Sri Lanka is vital before implementing a successful vector control program. Various studies have indicated that genetic divergence, caused by genetic drift or selection, can significantly influence the vector capacity of arthropod species. To devise innovative control strategies for P. argentipes, explor

Modeling Spatial Distribution of Sergentomyia minuta (Diptera: Psychodidae) and Its Potential Implication in Leishmaniasis Transmission in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniases are parasitic diseases caused by Leishmania species and transmitted by the bite of sand flies. The genus Lutzomyia and Phlebotomus of sand flies are known to be the responsible vector for transmitting almost all Leishmania species to humans. The detection of Leishmania DNA in species of the genus Sergentomyia, in different regions, suggests their likely role in Leishmania transmission. METHODS: Our objective was to determine the potential geographical distribution of Sergentomyia minuta, the most dominant Sergentomyia species in Morocco, using ecological niche modeli
