Does personality functioning influence perception of social distance amongst Czech students studying in an international university, a state university and the general population?

This study investigates the differences of personality functioning and attitudes toward minorities amongst Czech university students and the general population. Utilizing the newly developed scale measuring the concept of personality functioning (Level of Personality Functioning Scale - LPFS), the Modern Racism Scale (MRS), the Blatant and Subtle Prejudice Scale (BSPS) and the Bogardus Social Distance Scale, we compared 75 Czech students from an international university and a state university with 55 general population participants. The results show that students exhibited higher levels of imp

Hostile cognitions and emotions following social exclusion in Japanese adults and young children.

Social exclusion heightens negative emotions and hostile cognition toward others; however, its effects on non-Western adults and children remain unclear. These studies examined the effects on Japanese adults (N = 68; 34 female; Mage = 21.87 years) and 4- to 6-year-old children (N = 147; 78 female). The results showed that although excluded adults reported higher negative emotions and hostile evaluations of excluders, hostile cognitions toward others did not differ significantly between the inclusion and exclusion conditions. Excluded older children reported higher hostile evaluations toward ex

Cardiac cycle modulates social pain.

Social pain is a painful feeling evoked by social rejection, exclusion, or the loss of other important people. Previous research suggests that physical pain is reduced by increased signals from baroreceptors that monitor blood pressure. This pre-registered study investigated whether social pain is attenuated by increased baroafferent signals, as observed in physical pain. Given that baroafferent signals increase during cardiac systole and decrease during diastole, we hypothesized that feelings of pain induced by social rejection would be lower when exclusion events are presented at the cardiac

Workplace inclusion of employees with back pain and mental health problems: A focus group study about employees' experiences.

AIM: To explore how employees experience workplace inclusion of their colleagues or themselves when having back pain or mental health problems. METHODS: Three focus group interviews with a sample of 16 kindergarten employees were conducted. Systematic Text Condensation was used for analysis. RESULTS: The participants emphasized that it was easier to include colleagues whose health problems were specific, especially when they were open about having problems and expressed their needs for accommodation clearly. Discussions revealed difficulties of acceptance and accommodating colleagues with lo

School-Based Outcomes Among Youth With Incarcerated Parents: Differences by School Setting.

BACKGROUND: Parental incarceration impacts millions of children in the United States and has important consequences for youths' adjustment and school-based outcomes. METHODS: Using data from a survey of youth behavior in one large Midwestern state, we examined the effect of both present and past parental incarceration on school-based outcomes, across 3 school settings (public schools, alternative learning centers, and juvenile correctional facilities). RESULTS: Parental incarceration was significantly associated with students' poor school-based outcomes; however, these effects varied markedl

Cognitive distortions mediate depression and affective response to social acceptance and rejection.

BACKGROUND: The emotional context insensitivity (ECI) hypothesis suggests individuals with depression have blunted affective responses to both positive and negative events. We tested ECI in a social context to examine how depression relates to affective responses to social acceptance and rejection outcomes. Furthermore, we aimed to identify cognitive mechanisms linking depression with affective response to social feedback. Finally, we tested whether these processes are similar for social anxiety. METHOD: 90 participants (age 18-26 years; 53 women) completed the two-visit Chatroom task. At Vis

When and how are spatial perceptions scaled?

This research was designed to test the predictions of 2 approaches to perception. By most traditional accounts, people are thought to derive general-purpose spatial perceptions that are scaled in arbitrary, unspecified units. In contrast, action-specific approaches propose that the angular information inherent in optic flow and ocular-motor adjustments is rescaled and transformed into units related to intended actions. A number of studies have shown, for example, that the apparent distance to targets is scaled by the effort required to walk the extent. Such studies can be accommodated by the t

The perception of an out-group after provocation by one of its members.

How provocation by a single out-group member exacerbates perceptions of out-group dissimilarity was examined. Male American college students provoked by a Latvian college student not only perceived him as dissimilar from their own group of American college students but also perceived other Latvians (but not Senegalans, an irrelevant out-group) as dissimilar from American college students. Drawing negative inferences about the Latvian provocateur was correlated with perceiving other Latvians as dissimilar.

The emotional and motivational aftermath of everyday rejection.

Although rejection is a universal human experience, the short- and long-term social and emotional consequences of naturally occurring rejection are understudied. Using two experience-sampling designs, we delineated the concurrent and prospective sequelae of rejection. Study 1 used daily diary data collected in 2020 to examine how rejection experiences predicted daily emotional well-being and social motivation in 269 participants (age range = 18-73) screened for social anxiety and/or depression symptoms. Study 2 used denser, within-day sampling via ecological momentary assessment data collected

The association of disordered eating and sexual health with relationship satisfaction in female service members/veterans.

Low relationship satisfaction is associated with mental health disorders in service members/veterans (SM/Vs), yet eating disordered behavior (EDB) and sexual function and satisfaction in SM/Vs are understudied. Those with EDB may experience bodily discomfort that may be associated with low relationship satisfaction because of avoidance of physical contact and intimacy, suggesting that sexual satisfaction and function may modify the association of EDB and relationship satisfaction. As the majority of female SM/Vs are partnered, it is imperative to study the association of sexual function and sa

Effectiveness of an Interdisciplinary Integrated Care Model on Perioperative Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Lung Cancer Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer surgery is associated with significant perioperative morbidity, including pulmonary complications and psychological distress. The effectiveness of comprehensive interdisciplinary care models in improving outcomes remains insufficiently studied. METHODS: This single-center randomized controlled trial enrolled 240 patients undergoing lung cancer surgery between March 2021 and December 2023. Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive either an interdisciplinary integrated care intervention (n = 120) or standard care (n = 120). The intervention included preoperative pulmonary

The Psychology of Pandemics.

This article reviews the current state of knowledge and promising new directions concerning the psychology of pandemics. Pandemics are disease outbreaks that spread globally. Historically, psychological factors have been neglected by researchers and health authorities despite evidence that pandemics are, to a large extent, psychological phenomena whereby beliefs and behaviors influence the spreading versus containment of infection. Psychological factors are important in determining (a) adherence to pandemic mitigation methods (e.g., adherence to social distancing), (b) pandemic-related social

Factors influencing uptake of protective behaviours by healthcare workers in England during the COVID-19 pandemic: A theory-based mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital infection control policies protect patients and healthcare workers (HCWs) and limit the spread of pathogens, but adherence to COVID-19 guidance varies. We examined hospital HCWs' enactment of social distancing and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, factors influencing these behaviours, and acceptability and feasibility of strategies to increase social distancing. METHODS: An online, cross-sectional survey (n = 86) and semi-structured interviews (n = 22) with HCWs in two English hospitals during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

Managing online learning burnout via investigating the role of loneliness during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Learning burnout, which is a negative state of learning and seriously reduces learning engagement, has become more prevalent in online instruction. Especially during the COVID-19, loneliness during the online learning has attracted a great deal of attention from researchers, who have found that it exacerbates the risk of social media addiction and increase rates of depression. However, the relationship between loneliness and academic burnout in online formal learning has not been well explored in previous studies. Therefore, the present study explores whether and to what extent lon

Social media ostracism and creativity: moderating role of emotional intelligence.

The goal of this study is to learn more about social media ostracism, a stressor associated with online social networks, defined by feelings of rejection, exclusion, or ignoring. We investigate the connection between social media ostracism and worker creativity. We suggest that psychological safety and psychological rumination serve as intermediaries in this relationship. Furthermore, we investigate emotional intelligence as a relationship regulator. To verify our hypothesis, we gathered data with the help of the HR department from 244 workers of nine Chinese organizations. Our research shows

Seeing myself through the eyes of my peers: Explaining the self-concept of students with and without special educational needs through acceptance and friendship.

INTRODUCTION: Paving the way towards inclusive education, it is essential to aim for positive social outcomes for all students, including cultivating a positive self-concept and fostering acceptance and friendships with peers. Although self-concept, acceptance and friendships are interrelated, research focussing on the relationship between these constructs remains limited. METHOD: This study examined the self-concept, acceptance and friendships of two groups of typically developing students in secondary education (n = 401) and two groups of students in special secondary education with either

Examining the impact of online rejection among emerging adults with borderline personality pathology: Development of a novel online group chat social rejection paradigm.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional reactivity and interpersonal sensitivity, including greater emotional and cognitive reactivity to social rejection than controls. However, existing social rejection paradigms are not relevant to the particular social contexts that are increasingly relevant for adolescents and young adults (i.e., social media and online settings). This study examined emotional, parasympathetic, and cognitive responses to a novel online group chat social interaction task among emerging adults (18-24 years old) with a range of BPD pathology. Humanizing folk devils using ethnography.

The sociological concepts of the "moral panic" and the deviant "folk devil" apply to the drug panics in the United States over methamphetamine, heroin, and crack cocaine. Mothers or pregnant women who smoke crack cocaine, and their babies, are assigned exaggerated "demonic" attributes that result in stigma and societal rejection. Otherwise, ethnographic studies of drug users demonstrate realities that are other than what might be considered were one to merely look at their use and the consequences. These considerations are examined with respect to the image of folk devils, methadone program at
