[Clinical-bioelectric correlation of spastic seizures in children--prospective study].

Serial electroencephalographic (EEG) records were registered in 63 children (38 boys and 25 girls) at the age between 1 month to 7 years in 1981-1987. Examinations were done while awake and during spontaneous sleep. Evaluation was performed in relation to the age and physiological status during examination. Three hundred ninety two EEGs recorded. The following types were found in the initial EEG records in 63 children: 1-normal, 29-hypo-arrythmic, 16 with generalized paroxysmal abnormalities, 12 with localized abnormalities, and 4 with generalized abnormalities. Table 1--illustrates types of t

Psychomotor agitation and irritability in adolescents with manic episode: Clinical data from three inpatient units.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the characteristics of adolescents with Bipolar disorder-I with irritability and agitation (Mania+IA) compared to those without irritability and agitation (Mania-IA) in a multi-center representative sample. METHODS: Data of 145 patients from three tertiary-care inpatient units between 2016 and 2021 were obtained. Psychomotor agitation was defined as a score of ≥3 on the YMRS "Increased Motor Activity--Energy" item, irritability as a score of ≥4 on the YMRS 'irritability' item, and severity anchors of speech and thought disturbance on the YMRS '6 and 7' item

The validation of a new online cognitive assessment tool: The MyCognition Quotient.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment affects many psychiatric patients, influences daily functioning, and should be an important treatment focus. Assessment of cognitive status is crucial in cognitive remediation studies. However, current test batteries have limitations. A new, online tool, the MyCognition Quotient (MyCQ), was developed to assess cognition within 30 min. We present the psychometric properties and aim to determine the validity of the MyCQ by comparing it with the Cambridge Neuropsychological Automated Test Battery (CANTAB). METHODS: Eighty-seven patients diagnosed with obsessive c

Retrospective analysis of psychomotor agitation, hypomanic symptoms, and suicidal ideation in unipolar depression.

In bipolar depression, psychomotor agitation is relatively common and often is associated with other noneuphoric hypomanic symptoms and suicidal ideation. Our goal in this retrospective study was to ascertain the co-occurrence of agitation, bipolar features, and suicidal ideation in unipolar disorder. We retrospectively evaluated 314 inpatients with DSM-IV major depressive disorder (MDD) and no other Axis I diagnosis with the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) Life Chart Method and the Operational Criteria for Psychotic Illness (OPCRIT) checklist to ascertain their symptom profiles ac

Epilepsy expands the phenotype of L-arginine:glycine amidinotransferase deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: L-arginine:glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder affecting creatine biosynthesis, leading to developmental delay, intellectual disabilities, and myopathy. Unlike other creatine deficiency disorders, its link to epilepsy remains uncertain. This study presents the first reported epilepsy cases in AGAT deficiency, analyzing seizure patterns and response to creatine monohydrate supplementation. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed two AGAT-deficient probands identified through a national collaboration. Biochemical assessments of creatine an

[Zellweger syndrome, neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy or infantile Refsum's disease in a case with generalized peroxisome defect?].

An eleven month-old boy presented clinically with craniofacial dysmorphia, severe psychomotor retardation, neurological deterioration, no response to visual and acoustic stimuli, failure to thrive, hepatomegaly and adrenal insufficiency. Specific biochemical markers for a peroxisomal deficiency disorder (Zellweger's syndrome, neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy, infantile Refsum's disease) revealed pathological results for very long chain fatty acids, phytanic acid, pristanic acid, plasmalogen biosynthesis and catalase, thus confirming the clinical diagnosis. Psychopathological characteristics of bipolar and unipolar depression - potential indicators of bipolarity.

BACKGROUND: Establishing whether a depressive episode is part of a unipolar or bipolar disorder is essential for treatment planning. Over recent years, a growing number of publications have discussed psychopathological characteristics that might serve as indicators of bipolarity in patients with a history of depression dominated by unipolar symptoms. Our primary aim was to verify the adequacy of these indicators in contributing to a precise diagnosis in everyday clinical practice. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We investigated 104 patients diagnosed with major depressive episode at the time of examina

Tick-borne encephalitis in pregnancy.

A case report describing the case of a young and healthy pregnant patient who manifested tick-borne encephalitis in her peripartal period. This neuroinfection is rare in pregnant women. A more severe encephalomyelitic form of the disease, resulting in lasting consequences, occurred in the patient even though she had recently undergone a proper vaccination. In the course of 11-month observation, her newborn showed no symptoms of the disease nor psychomotor developmental disorders.

Overweight-related alterations in brain structural covariance networks and their potential impact on cognitive function in subjective cognitive decline.

Overweight is increasingly recognized for its role in brain alterations that affect both normative and pathological aging. However, its impact on subjective cognitive decline (SCD) remains unclear. We investigated gray matter volume (GMV) within structural covariance networks (SCNs) and their associations with cognitive performance in individuals with SCD, stratified by weight status. Ninety-six adults with SCD and overweight (overweight group) and a matched cohort of 96 with SCD and normal weight (normal-weight group) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cognitive assessm

Children's Behavior and Maternal Parenting Stress in Young Children With Sex Chromosome Trisomies.

OBJECTIVE: Children and adolescents with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) usually show a higher frequency of behavioral problems than typically developing (TD) children. However, little is known about the presence of behavioral issues in toddlers with SCT. This study aimed at investigating their behavioral profile in the second year of life and its impact on maternal stress. METHOD: Participants were 87 children ranging in age from 18 to 26 months: 63 children with SCTs (all diagnosed prenatally) and 24 TD children. Their psychomotor and language development and their behavioral profile were a

Symptoms predicting remission after divalproex augmentation with olanzapine in partially nonresponsive patients experiencing mixed bipolar I episode: a post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Rating scale items in a 6-week clinical trial of olanzapine versus placebo augmentation in patients with mixed bipolar disorder partially nonresponsive to ≥14 days of divalproex monotherapy were analyzed to characterize symptom patterns that could predict remission. At baseline, the two treatment groups were similar. FINDINGS: Factor analysis with Varimax rotation was performed post hoc on baseline items of the 21-Item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-21) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). Backwards-elimination logistic regression ascertained factors predictive of protocol

Cannabis-Induced Catatonia Complicated by Rhabdomyolysis, Acute Kidney Injury, and Sympathetic Overactivity: A Case Report.

Catatonia is a severe neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by motor, behavioral, and autonomic disturbances. It can result in life-threatening complications such as rhabdomyolysis, venous thromboembolism, acute kidney injury, and autonomic instability. Substance use, particularly cannabis, is increasingly recognized as a precipitant, especially in vulnerable individuals with prior psychotic episodes. We report the case of a 21-year-old male patient with a history of cannabis-induced psychosis who presented with mutism, social withdrawal, psychomotor retardation, and poor oral intake followi

Developmental Trajectory of Depressive Symptoms from Early Childhood through High School in Children and Adolescents with a High Intellectual Potential.

We aimed to explore the developmental trajectory of depressive symptoms in a national sample of French children with a high intellectual potential (HIP) seeking help from gifted organizations. Participants were drawn from a national retrospective survey sent to 1200 families with HIP children (IQ ≥ 130) from primary to high school and they answered a self-report questionnaire of a depression scale (MDI-C). The children's parents completed a self-report questionnaire collected on different stages of the child's school level, perinatality, psychomotor development, health, family's history, behav

Psychomotor retardation in depression: A critical measure of the forced swim test.

DSM-5 lists 9 different symptoms for major depressive disorder and dictates that either "depressed mood" or "loss of interest or pleasure" should be present for diagnosis. Both are relatively high-level symptoms of the complex affecto-cognitive disease. However, the single most common behavioral paradigm and the gold standard animal (rodent) test for depression, the forced swim test (FST), measures a low-level mechanical feature that resembles "psychomotor retardation" observed in depression. This symptom refers to the slowing down of cognitive processes and an associated reduction in mobility

Motor and visuomotor skills of children with Asperger's disorder: preliminary findings.

While motor clumsiness is frequently described as an associated feature of Asperger's Disorder, little research has examined specific motor skills and the relation among aspects of motor performance in this population. The present purpose was to present preliminary findings for three aspects of Asperger's: the presence and magnitude of gross motor and fine motor deficits, the presence and magnitude of visuomotor deficits, and the relation between motor functioning and visuomotor skills. 17 boys, 6 to 13 years old, with Asperger's were tested using standardized measures of gross, fine, and visu

Relevance of anger and irritability in outpatients with major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Current psychiatric classification systems underestimate the part played by anger and aggressiveness in unipolar depression. This study was designed to assess the relevance of anger, irritability, aggressiveness, hostility, and psychomotor activation in major depressive disorder. METHODS: A total of 222 newly admitted consecutive outpatients with major depressive disorder (mean age 48.9 years, 64.4% females) were enrolled in the study. They had no comorbid axis I or II DSM-IV disorder, and they received no treatment with antidepressants in the preceding 2 months. They were asses

Neuroimaging features in a neonate with rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata.

Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata is a rare genetic disorder of peroxisomal metabolism that is characterized clinically by shortening of the proximal limbs, cataracts, a characteristic facial appearance, failure to thrive, and psychomotor retardation. This report describes a newborn with a severe phenotype whose neuroimaging showed pachygyria-polymicrogyria, severe spinal stenosis causing compression of the cervical cord and brainstem, and tethering of the spinal cord. Imaging of the brain and spinal cord in patients with this disorder may aid prognosis and guide management decisions.
