Vision after early-onset lesions of the occipital cortex: I. Neuropsychological and psychophysical studies.

We analyzed the visual functions of two patients (MS, FJ) with bilateral lesion of the primary visual cortex, which occurred at gestational age 33 wk in MS and at postnatal month 7 in FJ. In both patients basic visual functions--visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, color, form, motion perception-are similarly preserved or modestly impaired. Functions requiring higher visual processing, particularly figure-ground segregation based on textural cues, are severely impaired. In MS, studied longitudinally, the deficits attenuated between the ages of 4.5 and 8 y, suggesting that the developing visual

Spatial and temporal auditory processing deficits following right hemisphere infarction. A psychophysical study.

Higher auditory function in a patient was investigated following a right hemisphere infarction between the middle and posterior cerebral artery territories involving the insula. The patient complained of lack of musical appreciation and a battery of tests confirmed a dissociated receptive musical deficit in the presence of normal appreciation of environmental sounds and speech. The ability to detect continuous changes in sound frequency in the form of sinusoidal frequency modulation was preserved. There was, however, a deficit in the analysis of rapid temporal sequences of notes which could un

Electrophysiological and psychophysical flicker sensitivity in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Temporal sensitivity was assessed in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT). Three measures of flicker sensitivity were obtained: psychophysical modulation thresholds, visual-evoked potentials (VEPs), and focal electroretinograms (FERGs). We found elevated psychophysical thresholds at higher temporal frequencies (30-50 Hz) in patients with POAG, relative to thresholds for age-matched controls. The OHT patients had elevated psychophysical thresholds only at 50 Hz. On the other hand, VEP amplitudes in POAG patients were reduced at all temporal frequencies,

Two types of bias in psychophysical detection and recognition procedures: nonparametric indices and effects of drugs.

In many conditional discrimination procedures, subjects are required to emit one of two responses in the presence of one stimulus and the other response in its absence. The two responses that occur may be formally differentiated, for example by their positions in the experimental space, and functionally differentiated, by the discriminative stimuli that control their occurrence. For example, the stimuli displayed on two response keys, such as color, may be discriminative stimuli for the particular key on which responses are reinforced. The behavior that occurs under these procedures can be ana

Psychophysical stress during a 24 h dive: A case study of an older male diver.

This case study investigated the psychophysiological stress responses of a diver during and after a 24-h hyperbaric exposure. Comprehensive biomarker analysis revealed relevant changes in oxidative stress parameters and cardiac muscle markers. Notably, a critical time point at 6 h (T2) emerged, characterized by peak oxidative stress and diminished antioxidant capacity, followed by progressive cardiac strain as evidenced by elevated creatine kinase isoenzime (CK-MBm) and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. Despite these physiological challenges, no pathologica

The psychophysical limits of agency: Biological motion percepts are dramatically weakened in slow-moving displays.

The most important stimuli we perceive may be other agents, given their effects on our fitness. Accordingly, perception may be specialized for processing agents, and one of the best-studied examples is biological motion: displays of surprisingly few moving dots ("point-light walkers"; PLWs) nevertheless give rise to rich percepts of locomoting agents. Is this a complex instance of general motion perception, such that PLWs simply inherit the lower thresholds of general motion perception? Or might biological motion have a distinct lower "speed limit"? Observers viewed PLWs moving in place, alway

Proprioception impacts body perception in healthy aging - Insights from a psychophysical and computational approach.

The way we perceive our body and its dimensions depends on how our brain combines multisensory information. As the human sensory system declines with age, we hypothesize that body perception may change during aging. We investigated this hypothesis by comparing body ownership (BO) and upper limb perceived dimensions (mBR) in young and older individuals (>65 years). We used computational and psychophysical methods to quantify alterations in mBR and BO, and modeled their relationship with sensorimotor and cognitive factors. Results revealed altered body perception in healthy older adults, with si

Psychophysical evidence for an internal model of gravity in the visual and vestibular estimates of vertical motion duration.

The motion of objects and ourselves along the vertical is affected by gravitational acceleration. However, the visual system is poorly sensitive to accelerations, and the otolith organs do not disassociate gravitational and inertial accelerations. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the brain estimates the duration of vertical visual motion and self-motion by means of an internal model of gravity predicting that downward motions are accelerated and upward motions are decelerated by gravity. In visual sessions, a target moved up or down while participants remained stationary. In vestibular sess

Psychophysical and social impact of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy in China: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy has been adopted in China as an effective preventive measure against ovarian cancer, particularly for individuals with breast cancer gene (BRCA) mutations. While the procedure's efficacy in reducing ovarian cancer risk is well established, the associated psychophysical and social impacts have received limited attention. Understanding these impacts is critical for enhancing patient care and improving quality of life. METHODS: This retrospective study included 154 BRCA mutation carriers who underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy at Fudan Uni

Remote psychophysical testing of smell in patients with persistent olfactory dysfunction after COVID-19.

Olfactory dysfunction associated with coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is in most cases transient, recovering spontaneously within a few days. However, in some patients it persists for a long time, affects their everyday life and endangers their health. Hence, we focused on patients with persistent loss of smell. The aim of this study was to evaluate olfactory dysfunction using a standardized test. Due to the pandemic, olfactory testing was performed online. Smell tests (Odorized Markers Test, OMT) were sent home to the patients. Together with the smell self-testing, participants reported

Association of computed tomography scores to psychophysical measures of olfaction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: While various sinus computed tomography (CT) scoring systems have been proposed and used in the literature, no single system has been identified as superior. The strength of associations between CT scoring systems and measures of olfaction also remains unclear. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Studies that reported both CT scores and measures of olfaction in a cross-sectional manner were included. RESULTS: A total of 37 studies

Estimating health of the implanted cochlea using psychophysical strength-duration functions and electrode configuration.

It is generally believed that the efficacy of cochlear implants is partly dependent on the condition of the stimulated neural population. Cochlear pathology is likely to affect the manner in which neurons respond to electrical stimulation, potentially resulting in differences in perception of electrical stimuli across cochlear implant recipients and across the electrode array in individual cochlear implant users. Several psychophysical and electrophysiological measures have been shown to predict cochlear health in animals and were used to assess conditions near individual stimulation sites in

Psychophysical Evaluation of the Olfactory Function: European Multicenter Study on 774 COVID-19 Patients.

BACKGROUND: The objective evaluation of the olfactory function of coronavirus disease 2019 patients is difficult because of logistical and operator-safety problems. For this reason, in the literature, the data obtained from psychophysical tests are few and based on small case series. METHODS: A multicenter, cohort study conducted in seven European hospitals between March 22 and August 20, 2020. The Sniffin-Sticks test and the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center orthonasal olfaction test were used to objectively evaluate the olfactory function. RESULTS: This study included 774 p
