Neuroinflammation and psychiatric illness.

Multiple lines of evidence support the pathogenic role of neuroinflammation in psychiatric illness. While systemic autoimmune diseases are well-documented causes of neuropsychiatric disorders, synaptic autoimmune encephalitides with psychotic symptoms often go under-recognized. Parallel to the link between psychiatric symptoms and autoimmunity in autoimmune diseases, neuroimmunological abnormalities occur in classical psychiatric disorders (for example, major depressive, bipolar, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorders). Investigations into the pathophysiology of these conditions tra

Active coping style is associated with natural killer cell cytotoxicity in asymptomatic HIV-1 seropositive homosexual men.

The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesis that a psychosocial model was associated with natural killer cell cytotoxicity (NKCC) in HIV-1 infection. A sample of 62 HIV-1 seropositive homosexual men at CDC stages II and III were given a psychosocial battery assessing life stressors, social support, and coping style. A regression model quantifying these variables along with control variables for alcohol use, substance use and nutritional status was estimated. Active coping style was directly and positively associated with NKCC, and trends toward a negative relationship of life stressors

Identifying barriers and facilitators to psychosocial care for people living with HIV in Ireland: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy means that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can now be defined as a manageable chronic illness. It is the facilitation of psychosocial care that has increasingly become a priority, as people living with HIV (PLWH) are disproportionately impacted by psychosocial stressors compared to the general population. The aim of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators to psychosocial care for PLWH in Ireland. METHODS: A mixed methods study design was used, employing a national survey of PLWH (n = 54) via Qualtrics and semi-structured

Permanent total parenteral nutrition: psychological and social responses of the early stages.

Permanent Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is a life-saving but complicated procedure which has profound effects upon the lives of patients and their families, but there is a dearth of information on the the psychosocial consequences of this unique form of therapy. The authors worked with 19 consecutive TPN patients in hospital and after discharge and observed their reactions. It was found that the earliest stages were the most difficult, with anxiety, depression, fear, and negative body image predictable and universal experiences. Major adjustment problems centered around the loss of the basi

Artificial intelligence-driven environments as emerging contexts in suicide risk.

Recent reports have described suicides temporally associated with artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated interactions, including conversational agents and algorithmically curated platforms. While causality cannot be inferred, these cases raise concern about AI-driven environments as emerging psychosocial contexts in suicide risk. This letter situates such observations within established frameworks, including the stress-diathesis model, cognitive theories, and interpersonal-psychological theory. AI systems may act as contextual risk modifiers by reinforcing maladaptive cognitions, promoting rumi

Informal Caregivers As True Partners In Mental Health Recovery: Is It Time For A Complete Rewrite?

This viewpoint highlights the indispensable role of informal caregivers in mental health recovery. The authors note that mental disorders affect around one in eight people worldwide, with major impacts on family quality of life and substantial health system costs. Informal caregivers are advocated not as peripheral supporters, but as key partners in care pathways, to be recognized in public policies and clinical practice.
