OBJECTIVE: Accurate information on the frequency and prevalence of manic or mixed episodes is important for therapeutic, prognostic, and safety concerns. We aimed to estimate the risk of relapse of manic and mixed episodes after delivery in women with bipolar I disorder or schizoaffective disorder-bipolar type.
METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Cochrane databases was carried out on November 17, 2022, using the terms ((bipolar disorder) OR (manic depre

A population of 349 women who gave birth, in an Obstetric Clinic in Greater S. Paulo, Brazil, during the period from 01/05/86 to 31/07/86 were studied. The results show that the group of pregnant adolescents (22.2%) received inadequate prenatal assistance, as the large majority of them (70.6%) started consultations during the second trimester of their pregnancy, and had an average of two consultations. During pregnancy this group presented a lower incidence of pathological disorders leading to out-patient and hospital treatment (39.3% and 7.9%, respectively) than did the adult pregnant women (

Bilateral facial palsy (BFP) is exceedingly rare, representing only 0.3%-2.0% of facial palsy cases. Unlike unilateral facial palsy, it is often caused by a serious underlying systemic disease and therefore warrants urgent medical intervention. The differential diagnosis is broad, and detailed history, physical examination, and investigations are essential for identifying the etiology. Common acquired causes in existing case series include Lyme disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome, sarcoidosis, trauma, and Bell's palsy. Palsy that develops rapidly is often caused by trauma, infections, or autoimmu

This study investigated access to health care among female prisoners in the state of Ceará, Brazil, and screened for common mental disorders. We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study in the only female prison in the state. Ninety detainees participated in the study. All participants were either pregnant or postpartum women or had one or more of the following health problems: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, tuberculosis, syphilis, hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The findings reveal that access to health care was limited, violating the fu

A 20 per cent prevalence of mild clinical depression was found in 120 women assessed at about six weeks postpartum. The strongest associated factor was occurrence of recent stressful life events. Previous history of psychiatric disorder, younger age, early postpartum blues, and a group of variables reflecting poor marital relationship and absence of social support were also notable. Poor marital support acted as a vulnerability factor, only producing an effect in presence of stressful life events. Previous psychiatric history produced a strong independent effect, both with and without life eve

In this study, our purpose was to examine whether personality and cognitive factors could be related to post-partum depression (PPD), mediated by anxiety, in Spanish women. Women were evaluated for personality and cognitive factors after the first trimester, for anxiety in the third trimester, and for PPD 4 months after childbirth. A structural equation model revealed that personality and cognitive factors were associated with anxiety and PPD as predictors. Neuroticism and extroversion proved to be the most relevant factors. Conscientiousness was associated with pregnancy anxiety. Pregnancy an

Overweight was recorded from 9.6 per cent of 6155 infants born between 1976 and 1981. Birth weights were between 4000 g and 4499 g in 8.5 per cent of the newborns, between 4500 g and 4999 g in 0.9 per cent, and in excess of 5000 g in 0.2 per cent. Sixty-five newborns with birth weights above 4500 g were evaluated in greater detail. The male-female ratio was almost three to one. The average age of the mothers was 25.7 years. Fifty-nine children were born spontaneously, three by forceps, and three by caesarean section. The Apgar score was eight and more in 64 newborns. The case history of one po

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum thyroid dysfunction (PPTD) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the development of transient hyperthyroidism and, more frequently, hypothyroidism (or both) during the first six months of the puerperal period. A variable incidence has been reported in part because of differences in the number of women studied, the frequency of thyroid assessment postpartum, diagnostic criteria and methodology. The aim of this study was to evaluate thyroid function, ultrasound images and titre of autoantibodies against thyroid antigens in a cohort of pregnant women who met the criteri

This study aimed to compare postpartum spiritual well-being and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms according to mode of delivery. The sample consisted of puerperal women who had given birth by cesarean section (n = 55) or vaginal delivery (n = 55). Data were collected using the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Scale and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale and analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. Among women who had vaginal deliveries, a positive correlation was found between the avoidance subdimension of the PTSD Scale and the hyperarousal subdimension of the Spiritual Well-Being

Depressive mood disorders following childbirth can be quantified with self-rating and observer-rating scales. During two months, in the period from November 1989 to March 1990, women admitted to the obstetric unit of the University of Würzburg were examined on days 3 and 5 post-partum with the Hamilton Psychiatric Rating Scale for Depression, the Montgomery-Asberg-Depression-Rating-Scale and the Befindlichkeits-Scale by von Zerssen. Results reveal that during the early puerperium, scores on these scales rarely reach the same severity as in major depressive disorder. The clinical picture is no

Post partum psychosis is a rare but severe psychiatric emergency, and its comorbidity with a new onset focal seizure disorder can pose a profound diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We present a tragic traumatic case where a 30-year-old multiparous woman, 12 weeks postpartum, with delusions of control, persecution, and an EEG-confirmed focal impaired awareness seizure (complex partial seizure), killed her two children. She was referred to our facility by the police 3 days after the tragic event in a confused and disoriented state. She had no previous history of psychiatric or neurological di

Mood disorders can come and go during the reproductive stages of a woman's life and beyond and can include premenstrual-related mood disorders, depression and other psychiatric disorders during pregnancy, postpartum mood disorders, and depression during menopause, as well as comorbid psychiatric conditions. Women may have regular contact with health care providers at these various stages in their lives, providing an opportunity for treatment intervention. However, clinicians struggle to effectively identify and manage these disorders, leaving women's mental health issues unaddressed and causin

Over 50% of women experience mood disturbance in the postpartum period, with significant implications for maternal and infant health but identifying those at risk is not easily possible. The essential amino acid, tryptophan (TRP) through its neuroactive metabolites, has been implicated in the pathology of mood disorders. Thus, TRP levels tested in the peripartum period have been proposed as a potential biomarker for subsequent development of postpartum mood disturbances, in particular postpartum depression (PPD). A systematic review and meta-analysis following PROSPERO guidelines [CRD420212524

A study of several hundred recurrent puerperal psychoses shows that about half of those with known onset recur in the same phase of reproduction, and half have onsets in different phases. Onsets in the same phase are especially a feature of prepartum psychosis and are the strongest indication of a specific trigger operating during pregnancy. Onsets in different phases provide a prima facie case for links between 'puerperal psychosis' and other reproductive onsets. They suggest that the 'picture puzzle' is not just about early onset puerperal psychosis, but a group of related reproductive trigg
