Prior expectation enhances sensorimotor behavior by modulating population tuning and subspace activity in sensory cortex.

Prior knowledge facilitates our perception and goal-directed behaviors, particularly when sensory input is lacking or noisy. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the improvement in sensorimotor behavior by prior expectations remain unknown. In this study, we examine the neural activity in the middle temporal (MT) area of visual cortex while monkeys perform a smooth pursuit eye movement task with prior expectation of the visual target's motion direction. Prior expectations discriminately reduce the MT neural responses depending on their preferred directions, when the sensory evidence is we

Eye movement study in essential tremor patients and its clinical correlates.

Essential tremor (ET) encompasses a wide spectrum of motor and non-motor features. Eye movement abnormalities were first reported two decades ago as an atypical finding in ET. Today, a growing number of publications about eye movement abnormalities in neurodegenerative diseases have helped understand their pathophysiology and the basis of their phenotypic variability. Thus, addressing such aspect in ET may disentangle, based on the oculomotor network abnormalities, the dysfunctional brain pathways in ET. In this study, we aimed to describe neurophysiological eye movement abnormalities in ET an

Impaired eye tracking performance in patients with presenile onset dementia.

Smooth pursuit eye movements, saccades and eye blinks were electrooculographically recorded from 26 healthy subjects of different age and 35 patients with presumptive presenile onset dementia (mean age 54), who had to track a light spot which oscillated with different speeds. Older subjects (mean age 51) performed the eye tracking with less accuracy and more saccades than younger ones (mean age 22). 16 patients with stage CDR 1 according to Washington University Clinical Dementia Rating performed smooth pursuit eye movements significantly worse with increased saccade numbers than the healthy o

Midbrain paresis of horizontal gaze.

Unilateral paramedian involvement of the midbrain tegmentum causes monocular paralysis of adduction in the ipsilateral eye, paresis of contralateral saccades in the opposite eye, and conjugate paresis of ipsilateral smooth pursuit. The adduction paralysis can be nuclear, or internuclear from a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. This distinctive midbrain syndrome of horizontal gaze paresis is exemplified by means of quantitative infrared oculographic, radiological, and neuropathological correlation in two patients with predominantly paramedian midbrain tumors involving the mesencepha

The Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon: a temporal frequency effect on perceived velocity in afferent motion perception.

Apparent velocities of moving visual stimuli are known to be different depending on whether the subject pursues the stimulus (efferently controlled motion perception) or whether the eye is stationary and the image moves across the retina (afferent motion perception). Afferent motion perception of a periodic pattern or a moving single object causes overestimation of velocity (magnitude estimations) as compared to smooth pursuit. This socalled Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon is shown to depend on local temporal frequency stimulation on the retina caused by the repetitive passage of contrast borders o

Oculomotor atypicalities in Developmental Coordination Disorder.

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) fail to acquire adequate motor skill, yet surprisingly little is known about the oculomotor system in DCD. Successful completion of motor tasks is supported by accurate visual feedback. The purpose of this study was to determine whether any oculomotor differences can distinguish between children with and without a motor impairment. Using eye tracking technology, visual fixation, smooth pursuit, and pro- and anti-saccade performance were assessed in 77 children that formed three groups: children with DCD (aged 7-10), chronologically age (C

Gaze pursuit, 'attention pursuit' and their effects on cortical activations.

A moving object draws our attention to it and we can track the object with smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). Gaze and attention are usually directed to the same object during SPEM. In this study we investigated whether gaze and attention can be divided during pursuit. We explored the cortical control of ocular tracking and attentive tracking and the role of focused and divided attention. We presented a sinusoidally moving target for pursuit and simultaneously a stationary target for fixation. Gaze could be directed to the pursuit target and attention to the fixation target or vice versa, or

Active linear head motion improves dynamic visual acuity in pursuing a high-speed moving object.

We usually move both our eyes and our head when pursuing a high-speed moving object. However, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), evoked by head motion, seems to disturb smooth pursuit eye movement because the VOR stabilizes the gaze against head motion. To determine whether head motion is advantageous for pursuing a high-speed moving object, we examined dynamic visual acuity (DVA) for a high-speed (80 degrees /s) rightward moving object with and without active linear rightward head motion (HM) at a maximum of 50 cm/s in nine healthy subjects. Furthermore, we analyzed eye and head movements to

Unilateral pursuit-induced congenital nystagmus.

We describe two patients with a lifelong history of oscillopsia only when following objects moving toward their left side. Neurologic examination was normal except for eye movements. The patients showed nystagmus during any tasks that required visual following toward the left (ie, smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, and vestibulo-ocular-reflex-suppression), but had no nystagmus during fixation of stationary targets or visual following tasks to the right. Eye-movement recordings showed waveforms during pursuit to the left that were typical of congenital nystagmus.

Eye movement features for assisting differentiation between posterior circulation infarction and vestibular neuritis in patients of acute vestibular syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: A significant portion of patients with acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) due to posterior circulation infarction (PCI) is free of non-vestibular signs. A differential diagnosis of this form from that due to vestibular neuritis (VN) can be challenging. We herein aimed to understand whether quantitative eye movement signature could be used to assist such a diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 56 patients with AVS due to PCI free of non-vestibular signs, 71 patients with AVS due to VN, and 127 controls were selected retrospectively into the study from our hospital database. Demographic, cl

Eye movements in patients in early psychosis with and without a history of cannabis use.

It is unclear whether early psychosis in the context of cannabis use is different from psychosis without cannabis. We investigated this issue by examining whether abnormalities in oculomotor control differ between patients with psychosis with and without a history of cannabis use. We studied four groups: patients in the early phase of psychosis with a history of cannabis use (EPC; n = 28); patients in the early phase of psychosis without (EPNC; n = 25); controls with a history of cannabis use (HCC; n = 16); and controls without (HCNC; n = 22). We studied smooth pursuit eye movements using a st

Quantifying Oculomotor Fatigability for Early Detection of Myasthenia Gravis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective, longitudinal study was to validate video-oculography (VOG) for early detection of myasthenia gravis (MG) in patients with clinical suspicion of MG but lacking confirmatory laboratory results. METHODS: Thirteen individuals suspected of having MG were studied using a 3-dimensional VOG system. Oculomotor fatigability, defined as the decrement (%) between the second and the last 5 average measures, was calculated. RESULTS: Significant reductions in oculomotor ranges were found, exceeding previous cutoff values for horizontal saccades (16.4 ± 9.8%), vertic

Congenital Deafness Leads to Altered Overt Oculomotor Behaviors.

The human brain is highly cross-modal, and sensory information may affect a wide range of behaviors. In particular, there is evidence that auditory functions are implicated in oculomotor behaviors. Considering this apparent auditory-oculomotor link, one might wonder how the loss of auditory input from birth might have an influence on these motor behaviors. Eye movement tracking enables to extract several components, including saccades and smooth pursuit. One study suggested that deafness can alter saccades processing. Oculomotor behaviors have not been examined further in the deaf. The main go

Oculomotor control in children who were born very prematurely.

PURPOSE: Preterm infants are at increased risk of a variety of cerebral lesions, involving the white matter, cortex, cerebellum, thalamus, and caudate nucleus, many of which could compromise the control of eye movement. Visual problems and disorders of binocularity and alignment have been reported, but little if any quantitative assessment of oculomotor control has been undertaken. The purpose of this study was to extend the initial pilot study and quantitatively examine the control of saccades, smooth pursuit, and antisaccades in children who were born very prematurely. METHODS: A group of p

Visual tracking in monkeys: evidence for short-latency suppression of the vestibuloocular reflex.

1. Monkeys normally use a combination of smooth head and eye movements to keep the eyes pointed at a slowly moving object. The visual inputs from target motion evoke smooth pursuit eye movements, whereas the vestibular inputs from head motion evoke a vestibuloocular reflex (VOR). Our study asks how the eye movements of pursuit and the VOR interact. Is there a linear addition of independent commands for pursuit and the VOR? Or does the interaction of visual and vestibular stimuli cause momentary, "parametric" modulation of transmission through VOR pathways? 2. We probed for the state of the VOR

Eye-brain coupling-mediated eye movement abnormalities as non-invasive biomarkers for mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review.

BackgroundEye movement abnormalities have emerged as promising non-invasive candidate biomarkers for the early detection, progression monitoring, and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with preliminary clinical evidence supporting their translational potential. Current AD diagnostic methods are limited by subjectivity, high cost, and complexity-making non-invasive biomarkers critical, especially for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The tight functional link between the eye and brain underscores eye movement abnormalities as a window into AD-related pathology.ObjectiveThis syst

Neurovisual profile in children affected by Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder caused by altered expression of the maternal copy of the UBE3A gene. Together with motor, cognitive, and speech impairment, ophthalmological findings including strabismus, and ocular fundus hypopigmentation characterize the clinical phenotype. The aim of this study was to detail the neurovisual profile of children affected by AS and to explore any possible genotype-phenotype correlations. METHODS: Thirty-seven children (23 females, mean age 102.8 ± 54.4 months, age range 22 to 251 months) with molecular confirmed diagnosis of
