Concentration of rare earth elements during high temperature pyrolysis of waste printed circuit boards.

An in-depth investigation was carried out on the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from a variety of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs). High temperature pyrolysis was carried out at 850 °C for 15 min using horizontal resistance and thermal plasma furnaces with different levels of turbulence. The concentration of REEs in key pyrolysis residues, namely, copper rich red metallic fraction, lead/tin rich white metallic fraction and slag rich carbonaceous residues, were determined using ICP analysis. Most of the REEs were found concentrated in the carbonaceous residue with negligible levels o…

Adsorption of hydrogen sulfide by biochars derived from pyrolysis of different agricultural/forestry wastes.

UNLABELLED: The characteristics and mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) adsorption on three different biochars derived from agricultural/forestry wastes through pyrolysis at various temperatures (100 to 500 ºC) were investigated. In this study, the H₂S breakthrough capacity was measured using a laboratory-characterized using pH and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results obtained demonstrate that all biochars were effective in H2S sorption. The sorption capacity of the biochar for H₂S removal is related to the pyrolysis temperature and pH of the surface. Certain threshol…

Sulfur emission from Victorian brown coal under pyrolysis, oxy-fuel combustion and gasification conditions.

Sulfur emission from a Victorian brown coal was quantitatively determined through controlled experiments in a continuously fed drop-tube furnace under three different atmospheres: pyrolysis, oxy-fuel combustion, and carbon dioxide gasification conditions. The species measured were H(2)S, SO(2), COS, CS(2), and more importantly SO(3). The temperature (873-1273 K) and gas environment effects on the sulfur species emission were investigated. The effect of residence time on the emission of those species was also assessed under oxy-fuel condition. The emission of the sulfur species depended on the …

Almond-shell-derived Fe-La biochar enables magnetic capture and pyrolysis-assisted conversion of nanoplastics.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging aquatic contaminants with high mobility, colloidal stability, and potential biological accessibility. However, many existing treatment methods mainly transfer captured NPs into a secondary solid phase, leaving NP-bearing residues that still require further handling. To address this issue, Fe-La-modified magnetic almond-shell biochar was prepared as a regenerable adsorbent that integrates nanoplastics capture, magnetic recovery, and pyrolysis-assisted regeneration. Among the prepared materials, Fe/La@MBC-1:1 exhibited the best overall adsorption performance towar…

Enhanced microwave assisted pyrolysis of waste rice straw through lipid extraction with supercritical carbon dioxide.

A combination of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction and microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) have been investigated for the valorisation of waste rice straw. ScCO2 extraction of rice straw led to a 0.7% dry weight yield of lipophilic molecules, at elevated temperatures of 65 °C and pressures of 400 bar. Lipid compositions (fatty acids, fatty alcohol, fatty aldehydes, steroid ketones, phytosterols, n-alkanes and wax esters) of the waxes obtained by scCO2 were comparable to those obtained Soxhlet extraction using the potentially toxic solvent n-hexane. ScCO2 extraction positively infl…

Quantitative Low-Field 19 F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Analysis of Carbonyl Groups in Pyrolysis Oils.

Pyrolysis bio-oils, one of the products of lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis, have the potential to be widely used as fuels. The chemical composition of bio-oils is very complicated as they contain hundreds, if not thousands, of different, mostly oxygen-containing, compounds with a wide distribution of physical properties, chemical structures, and concentrations. Detailed knowledge of bio-oil composition is crucial for optimizing both the pyrolysis processes and for any subsequent upgrading into a more viable fuel resource. Here we report the successful use of low-field, or benchtop, nuclear m…

Enhanced Dispersibility of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized by Laser Pyrolysis with Isopropanol Vapors as Sensitizer.

The present study investigates the synthesis and dispersibility process of iron oxide nanoparticles using laser pyrolysis with isopropanol vapors as a sensitizer agent. Similar to previous experiments (iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized by laser pyrolysis using ethylene as sensitizer gas), iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)5) was employed as an iron precursor; however, instead of the classic ethylene, isopropanol was chosen as a sensitizer, which indicated beneficial features (especially enhanced dispersibility in water) in the as-synthesized nanoparticles. Structural and elemental analysis confirme…
