Cultural Adaptations to the Assessment and Treatment of Trauma Experiences Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

A higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exists among racial and ethnic minority groups who experience trauma; however, little is known about cultural adaptations of trauma assessments and interventions, or whether those adaptations meet cultural needs. This systematic review examined the effectiveness and experiences of culturally adapted trauma assessments and interventions for adults from racial and ethnic minority groups. Empirical studies investigating culturally adapted trauma assessment and/or interventions targeting adults from racial and ethnic minority groups were

Measurement invariance and other psychometric properties of the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP-2R) across racial groups in adults experiencing homelessness and alcohol use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: People experiencing homelessness are disproportionately impacted by alcohol-related harm. Racially minoritized groups are disproportionately represented in the homeless population and are likewise disproportionately impacted by alcohol-related harm. Most alcohol outcome measures have not been adequately psychometrically studied in this marginalized population and across racial groups. This study documents psychometric properties, including measurement invariance, reliability, and convergent validity, of a measure of alcohol-related harm, the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP-2R), acr…

Disparities in absolute cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and other risk factors by income within racial/ethnic groups among middle-aged and older US people.

This cross-sectional study determined income disparities in age-adjusted prevalence and trends of 10-year high absolute cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease (CKD), leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), and current tobacco smoking within racial/ethnic groups in the US. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001-2016 data of 40-79-year-old people were analyzed. Survey periods were grouped as 2001-2006, 2007-2012, and 2013-2016. Race/ethnicity was grouped as non-Hispanic whites, non-Hispanic blacks, and other ra

A common copy number variation on chromosome 6 association with the gene expression level of endothelin 1 in transformed B lymphocytes from three racial groups.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that the endothelin system is involved in hypertension, heart failure, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney … n chromosome 6 and endothelin-1 (EDN1) expression. The effects of the CNV-EDN1 association in the 3 racial groups were in the same direction and explained 7% to 14% of the variation in EDN1 expression. CONCLUSIONS: Although the biological function of the chromosome 6 CNV is unclear, the significant and consistent association found in 3 racial groups suggests t …

Racial and ethnic minority groups, female sex, and tissue loss are associated with increased risk for hospital readmission following revascularization for chronic limb-threatening ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned hospital readmission following surgery for peripheral arterial disease is among the highest in all diagnosis-related groups. Although previous studies have examined readmissions in certain subgroups, such as for patients undergoing lower extremity bypass, few have examined longer term readmissions for those with the most severe form of peripheral arterial disease, chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Among patients with CLTI undergoing revascularization, we sought to outline rates of readmission beyond 30 days up to 1 year and identify patient and procedural characte

Relationship between Plasma P-Tau217 and Amyloid PET in Racial and Ethnic Underrepresented Groups (RE-URG) Compared with Non RE-URG in LEARN and A4.

BACKGROUND: Individuals from diverse racial and ethnic groups are severely underrepresented in Alzheimer's disease trials in part due to disproportionate biomarker ineligibility. Evidence from recent studies support plasma phosphorylated tau 217 (P-tau217) as an early marker for brain Aβ pathology and a reliable marker in predicting elevated brain amyloid PET in cognitively unimpaired adults. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the relationship between P-tau217 and 18-F florbetapir PET standard uptake value ratios (SUVR) is influenced by race and ethnicity in the Anti-Amyloid treatment in Asymptom

Rejection as a call to arms: inter-racial hostility and support for political action as outcomes of race-based rejection in majority and minority groups.

Both majority and minority group members fear race-based rejection, and respond by disparaging the groups that they expect will reject them. It is not clear, however, how this process differs in minority and majority groups. Using large representative samples of White (N= 4,618) and Māori (N= 1,163) New Zealanders, we found that perceptions of race-based rejection predicted outgroup negativity in both groups, but in different ways and for different reasons. For White (but not Māori) New Zealanders, increased intergroup anxiety partially mediated the relationship between cognitions of rejection

Clinical delineation of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in Italian children: comparison and contrast with other racial/ethnic groups and implications for diagnosis and prevention.

In Italy, little is known about the spectrum of adverse fetal effects related to maternal alcohol use during pregnancy. In this paper, we report on the phenotype of Italian children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). These data were gathered as part of a field study assessing the prevalence of FASD in children in an in-school study in a rural area near Rome. The purposes of this paper are: (1) to completely characterize the clinical phenotype of a large cohort of Italian children with FASD; (2) to correlate and contrast the phenotype of this population with that observed in other po

Eplet mismatch analysis and allograft outcome across racially diverse groups in a pediatric transplant cohort: a single-center analysis.

HLA eplet mismatch load has been suggested as an improvement to HLA antigen mismatch determination for organ selection. Given that eplet mismatches are determined based on amino acid sequence difference among HLA alleles, and that the frequency of HLA alleles varies between racial groups, we investigated the correlation between eplet mismatch load and allograft outcomes in 110 pediatric kidney transplant recipients who received their first organ from a donor of the same race (SRT) versus a donor of a different race (DRT). Adjusted modified Poisson regression was used to assess the interaction …

Association of group prenatal care with postpartum visit attendance: a secondary analysis of the Centering and Racial Disparities randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends a comprehensive postpartum visit (PPV) within 12 weeks after birth.1 Nationally, an estimated 60% to 65% of patients attend this visit, and attendance is lower among patients with public insurance.2 Group prenatal care (GPNC) has been associated with higher PPV attendance in observational studies that could not account for self-selection.3 We evaluated whether GPNC, compared with individual prenatal care (IPNC), was associated with PPV attendance in a planned secondary analysis of the Centering and Racial Disparities

The Racial, Cultural and Social Makeup of Hispanics as a potential Profile Risk for Intensifying the Need for Including this Ethnic Group in Clinical Trials.

Hypertension not only is the most frequently listed cause of death worldwide; but also a well-recognized major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Based on the latest published statistics published by the American Heart Association, hypertension is very prevalent and found in one of every 3 US adults. Furthermore, data from NHANES 2007 to 2010 claims that almost 6% of US adults have undiagnosed hypertension. Despite this staggering statistic, previous US guidelines for the prevention, detection, and treatment of hypertension (The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on

Reproductive health service preferences and perceptions of quality among low-income women: racial, ethnic and language group differences.

CONTEXT: Eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health care is an important national priority. Despite substantial research documenting such disparities, this topic has received limited attention in the reproductive health field. METHODS: Logistic regression was used to test for group differences in three service delivery preferences and five service quality perceptions among a nationally representative sample of 1,741 low-income black, Latina and white women aged 18-34; the data were collected in 1995 and represent the most recent data available for looking at these issues. RESULTS: E

Retrospective cohort analysis of low-molecular-weight heparin versus non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis across racial groups in hospitalized trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant risk factor for trauma, and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is the standard prophylactic treatment. Although direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) may be convenient, their comparative effectiveness with LMWH in patients with trauma remains unclear, particularly across different racial groups. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of DOACs and LMWH for VTE prophylaxis across racial groups in patients with trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included trauma patients with an Injury Severity Score …

Vaccine Hesitancy and Attributions for Autism among Racially and Ethnically Diverse Groups of Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Pilot Study.

Little is known about how racial/ethnic differences may influence attributions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and subsequent vaccine hesitancy, the latter of which refers to a continuum of concerns about vaccine safety that may lead to vaccine delays and/or refusals. Two hundred and twenty-five parents of children with ASD who were enrolled in the SPARK cohort (Simons Foundation Powering Autism Research for Knowledge) completed the Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines survey and the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire. 28.9% of respondents (n = 65) were vaccine hesitant (PACV sco
