Radiation keratosis associated with exposure to a gold ring.

A radiation keratosis occurred in a woman who wore a radioactive gold ring forty-three years ago. Clinicians should be aware that not all "warty lesions" on the hands are actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis, or warts. Radioactive gold rings still exist. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, since patients may no longer be wearing the offending ring.

A spacecraft shielding model for calculating exposures to radiation.

A spacecraft shielding model for calculating exposure to radiation is proposed. This model is based on the concept of the randomly inhomogeneous character of the material thickness distribution both in separate equipment units and the spacecraft as a whole. This concept has made it possible to obtain the shielding function of an arbitrary point in a spacecraft necessary to calculate the radiation exposure using its mean density, geometry and the ratio of the shielding function dispersion to its mean. This is constant for the spacecraft. This conclusion was verified for several Soviet and U.S.A

Radiation exposure in endovascular surgery of the head and neck.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiation risk to the operator and the patient during endovascular surgery of the head and neck. METHODS: The dose was measured using thermoluminescence dosimeters attached at the body surface of the operator and the patient during 15 endovascular surgeries (3 for arteriovenous malformation, 8 for dural arteriovenous fistulas, and 4 for other disorders of the head and neck). The dose was measured at seven sites on the operator and at five sites on the patient. RESULTS: The mean number of digital subtraction angiography studies and fluoroscopy time were 21 +/- 10 and

Mediastinal fibrosis and radiofrequency radiation exposure: is there an association?

A 45-year-old officer, working for a period of 18 years at a military radar base, presented with progressive exertional dyspnea, dry cough, and hemoptysis. Subsequent evaluation demonstrated a left pulmonary artery occlusion as well as a left upper lobe bronchus stenosis, due to a dense fibrotic mediastinal mass. Histologically, this proved to be idiopathic mediastinal fibrosis (IMF). The development of IMF in a man exposed for a long period to radio-frequency radiation (RFR) is unique in the literature in English. The possible association of radiation exposure with IMF is discussed.

Dosimetric aspects of exposure of the population to ionizing radiation.

Radiation carcinogenesis is generally considered to be the most important detrimental effect of exposure to ionizing radiation. The collective effective dose-equivalent values due to medical procedures amount to values between 10 and 20 per cent of the doses received from natural radiation. Risk factors have been derived up to the present from three large epidemiological studies, notably atomic bomb survivors, spondylitis patients and female patients treated for cancer of the cervix. The assessment of the absorbed doses received by the inhabitants of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has received continu

A suggested limit for population exposure to radiofrequency radiation.

Unlike a number of other nations, the U.S. does not currently have guidelines for the exposure of the public to radiofrequency (RF) radiation. In order to determine whether the current data base was sufficient to support an interim determination of a limit for population exposure to RF radiation (0.5 MHz-100 GHz), a critical and comprehensive review of the available literature on the biological effects of RF radiation was recently completed. In the analysis of this data, a number of simplifying assumptions had to be employed; among them was the use of the specific absorption rate (SAR) as the

[Damage to erythrocyte membranes on exposure to ionizing radiation].

A method for quantitative determination of injury to erythrocyte membranes is suggested. It is based on different distribution pattern in urografin of normal and injured erythrocytes during sedimentation. A progressive growth of blood erythrocyte membrane injury has been demonstrated after rats were exposed to gamma-irradiaton at a dose of 100 to 500 Gy.

Occupational exposure to radiation among health workers: Genome integrity and predictors of exposure.

The current study aimed to investigate genomic instabilities in healthcare workers who may experience varying levels of radiation exposure through various radiological procedures. It also sought to determine if factors related to the work environment and dosimeter reading could effectively explain the observed genomic instabilities. Utilizing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay (CBMN) on peripheral blood lymphocytes, we assessed a spectrum of genomic aberrations, including nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB), nuclear budding (NBUD), micronucleus (MN) formation, and total DNA damage (TDD). The stud

Radiation exposure to deep brain stimulation leads during multiple cranial radiation courses: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). Concurrently, brain tumors are increasing in incidence, creating complex clinical scenarios when both conditions coexist. The safety of delivering radiation therapy to patients with active DBS devices remains poorly documented, with limited guidelines available. OBSERVATIONS: This case report describes a 69-year-old male PD patient with bilateral DBS leads who developed metastatic melanoma with brain metastases. He underwent multiple radiation treatments, including stereotactic radiosurgery and

Efficacy of a radiation safety education initiative in reducing radiation exposure in the pediatric IR suite.

BACKGROUND: The use of ionizing radiation is essential for diagnostic and therapeutic imaging in the interventional radiology (IR) suite. As the complexity of procedures increases, radiation exposure risk increases. We believed that reinforcing staff education and awareness would help optimize radiation safety. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a radiation safety education initiative on IR staff radiation safety practices and patient radiation exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After each fluoroscopic procedure performed in the IR suite during a 4-month period, dose-area product (DAP), fluo

Physiological Effects of Co-exposure to Ionizing Radiation and Noise within Occupational Exposure Limits.

Workers are frequently exposed to the occupational hazards of ionizing radiation and noise. Co-exposure to these hazards is not well understood in terms of their physiological effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological effects of co-exposure to ionizing radiation and noise within the occupational limit. This study extracted the physical examination parameters of workers who met the screening criteria from the occupational health surveillance database. The workers were divided into three groups: the co-exposure (COE) group, the ionizing radiation exposure (ION) group, a

Intraoperative Fluoroscopy Exposure: A Systematic, Multi-specialty Review of Occupational Radiation Exposure to Surgeons.

Fluoroscopy is commonly used intraoperatively to obtain real-time procedural imaging. While this technique is integral for patient care, it increases the exposure of surgeons and staff to ionizing radiation. To date, no comprehensive systematic review has examined the radiation risks associated with fluoroscopy or the protective strategies implemented across surgical subspecialties. Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, we searched PubMed and EMBASE to identify studies reporting surgeons' intraoperative occupational radiation exposure

[Radiation Protection Against Exposure from Patients Receiving 131I-MIBG and Released from Radiation Treatment Room].

131I-3-iodobenzylguanidine or 131I-iobenguane (3-(131I) iodobenzylguanidine or 131I-iobenguane [131I-MIBG]) is a radioactive agent that is specifically accumulated in tumor cells such as pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma. Due to its cytotoxic beta ray emitted from 131I, it has been developed as an agent for radioisotope therapy and some researchers have reported its effectiveness. In this study, based on the patients' data from previous clinical trials of 131I-MIBG therapy, we evaluated the radiation safety for public exposure caused by radiation emitted from patients who received 131I-MIBG.

Nationwide and regional assessment of individual radiation exposure footprint.

The management of radiation exposure (RE) is critical for protecting human health, ensuring environmental safety, and optimizing industrial and medical applications. Inadequate RE management can lead to cancer risks, genetic effects, environmental contamination, and occupational hazards. RE arises from natural, medical, and occupational sources, and assessing these factors individually fails to provide a comprehensive understanding. This study systematizes RE management by estimating RE at national and regional levels, presenting it as Radiation Exposure Footprint (REF) to identify key influen
