The combined effects of acute irradiation and food supply on survival and fertility in Daphnia magna.

The results of recent studies have provided strong evidence for the combined effects of diet restriction and exposure to chemical on the survival and reproduction of aquatic organisms. However, the combined effects of diet restriction and exposure to ionizing radiation remain poorly understood. To establish whether parental irradiation and diet restriction can affect the survival and fertility of directly exposed crustaceans and their progeny, Daphnia magna were given 10, 100 and 1000 mGy of acute γ-rays either during chronic diet restriction or normal food supply. Acute exposure to 1000 mGy s

[Effect of soil radiation pollution on the plant content of 137Cs and biogenic elements].

The paper presents the data of many years' studies of the effect of different soil radiation pollution levels on the plant accumulation of different types of 137Cs and potassium and phosphorus salts. With increased soil radiation levels, not only the plant content of 137Cs becomes higher, but that of potassium and phosphoric acid also changes. The amount of potassium is decreased in the topinambour and increased in the lentils, but only in its seeds; that of potassium and phosphoric acid is increased in all parts of rape.

Numerical simulations of radon as an in situ partitioning tracer for quantifying NAPL contamination using push-pull tests.

Presented here is a reanalysis of results previously presented by [Davis, B.M., Istok, J.D., Semprini, L., 2002. Push-pull partitioning tracer tests using radon-222 to quantify non-aqueous phase liquid contamination. J. Contam. Hydrol. 58, 129-146] of push-pull tests using radon as a naturally occurring partitioning tracer for evaluating NAPL contamination. In a push-pull test where radon-free water and bromide are injected, the presence of NAPL is manifested in greater dispersion of the radon breakthrough curve (BTC) relative to the bromide BTC during the extraction phase as a result of radon

[Classification of mines in Poland by group radiation exposure of miners].

The computer data base on individual occupational exposure to ionizing radiation among miners (established at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Lodz) was used to classify all Polish non-uranium mines (coal, copper, lead-zinc and chemical raw material mines) according to values of the so-called group radiation exposure (in man-sivert units). In total 72 coal mines, 13 chemical raw material mines and 10 metal ore mines employing 246,580, 3,080, 17,820 miners, respectively, were assessed. The analysis of individual annual miners exposures indicated the highest exposure to ionizing rad

Activity concentration of indoor radon and its short-lived progeny (218Po, 214Pb, and 214Po) and their effect on atmospheric ionization rate in Sana'a, Yemen.

Exposure to ionizing radiation inside houses, especially radionuclides of radon and its progeny, poses serious health risks that can be exacerbated when inhaled as a result of interaction with human lung tissue. Also, air ionization is mainly due to these radionuclides. Therefore, accurate measurements of radon activity concentrations and its short-lived progeny are required to assess dose and environmental pollution and estimate ionization rates in indoor environments. For this purpose, we employed a previously tested and approved reliable method, following the three-count procedure. This met

A reconsideration of acute Beryllium disease.

CONTEXT: Although chronic beryllium disease (CBD) is clearly an immune-mediated granulomatous reaction to beryllium, acute beryllium disease (ABD) is commonly considered an irritative chemical phenomenon related to high exposures. Given reported new cases of ABD and projected increased demand for beryllium, we aimed to reevaluate the patho physiologic associations between ABD and CBD using two cases identified from a survey of beryllium production facility workers. CASE PRESENTATION: Within weeks after exposure to beryllium fluoride began, two workers had systemic illness characterized by der

Domestic radon remediation of UK dwellings by Sub-Slab Depressurisation: evidence for a baseline contribution from constructional materials.

To quantify the effectiveness of Sub-Slab Depressurisation, widely used in the United Kingdom (U.K.) to mitigate indoor radon gas levels in residential properties, a study was made of radon concentration data collected from a set of 170 homes situated in Radon Affected Areas in Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties, remediated using conventional sump/pump technology. A high incidence of satisfactory remediation outcomes was achieved, with 100% of the houses remediated demonstrating post-remediation radon concentrations below the U.K. domestic Action Level of 200 Bq m(-3), while more than

Estimation of radon progeny concentration based on track morphological parameters.

As the integrated measurements of radon progeny are essential to its risk assessment, a new method based on the morphological analysis of tracks on CR-39 was established for the discrimination of alpha particles emitted from different progenies. The preliminary experiment confirmed its feasibility and revealed its potential for application in long-term surveys of indoor radon progeny. This new attempt was expected be benefit to the improvement of integrated measurements of radon progeny.

Radon-222 and Leukemia.

Leukemia was the first medically observed human cancer related to ionizing radiation in the 1945 follow-up study of atomic bomb survivors. The bone exposure and dose calculated here are based on the measured solubility of the noble gas 222 Rn in blood. A fraction of the 222 Rn gas in blood distributes as dissolved gas to all organs, with the fraction depending upon the blood flow rate to the organ. The exposure and dose calculated are for men and women based on measurements made for the blood flow rate to the femur, the largest bone in the human skeleton. The annual exposure and dose estimated

ASSESSMENT OF RADIUM ACTIVITY CONCENTRATION AND RADON EXHALATION RATES IN IBERIAN PENINSULA BUILDING MATERIALS.

Radium (226Ra) is a natural radioactive element of the uranium decay series, which could also be present in building materials. Radon (222Rn) is continuously produced by the decay of 226Ra and its presence inside buildings can contribute to the increase of the population exposure to ionizing radiation. In this work, the amount of radium activity concentration and radon exhalation rates in several types of building materials that are commonly used in the Iberian Peninsula have been tested. The radium activity concentration was measured by gamma-ray spectrometry, whereas the radon exhalation rat

The evolution of depleted uranium as an environmental risk factor: lessons from other metals.

Depleted uranium (DU) is used in both civilian and military applications. Civilian uses are primarily limited to ballast and counterweights in ships and aircraft with limited risk of environmental release. The very nature of the military use of DU releases DU into the environment. DU released into the environment from military use takes the form of large fragments that are chemically unchanged and dust in the form of oxides. DU dust is nearly insoluble, respirable and shows little mobility in the soil. Exposure to DU occurs primarily from inhalation of dust and possible hand to mouth activity.

Enhanced sorption of trichloroethene by smectite clay exchanged with Cs+.

Trichloroethene (TCE) is one of the most common pollutants in groundwater, and Cs+ can be a cocontaminant at nuclear facilities. Smectite clays have large surface areas, are common in soils, have high affinities for some organic contaminants, and hence can potentially influence the transport of organic pollutants entering soils and sediments. The exchangeable cations present near smectite clay surfaces can radically influence the sorption of organic pollutants by soil clays. This research was undertaken to determine the effect of Cs+, and other common interlayer cations, such as K+ and Ca2+, o

ESTIMATION OF AIRBORNE 106RU ACTIVITY CONCENTRATION FROM TOTAL BETA ACTIVITY OF PM10 PARTICLE FRACTIONS.

Airborne radioruthenium, as a result of an accidental release, presents a risk for occupational and public exposure. In fall 2017, a detection of 106Ru was reported by the European atmospheric radioactive contamination monitoring networks. We investigated the daily specific total beta activity of PM10 particle fractions samples. The presented method enables indirect determination of airborne 106Ru activity concentration from total beta activity, in case 106Ru was confirmed as single excess radiological pollutant. This allows for daily measurements and time-resolved 106Ru activity concentration

Engineering a recombinant Deinococcus radiodurans for organopollutant degradation in radioactive mixed waste environments.

Thousands of waste sites around the world contain mixtures of toxic chlorinated solvents, hydrocarbon solvents, and radionuclides. Because of the inherent danger and expense of cleaning up such wastes by physicochemical methods, other methods are being pursued for cleanup of those sites. One alternative is to engineer radiation-resistant microbes that degrade or transform such wastes to less hazardous mixtures. We describe the construction and characterization of recombinant Deinococcus radiodurans, the most radiation-resistant organism known, expressing toluene dioxygenase (TDO). Cloning of t

Chromosome analysis of peripheral lymphocytes from persons exposed to radioactive fallout in Norway from the Chernobyl accident.

Chromosome analysis of peripheral lymphocytes from two Norwegian populations (44 reindeer herding South samis from Røros and Snåsa, 12 sheep farmers from Valdres) exposed to fallout from the Chernobyl accident were made. The doses from caesium through the years 1987-1991 were calculated based on whole-body measurements 134Cs and 137Cs giving a total cumulative mean internal dose of 5.54 mSv for the total group of 56 persons. Chromosome aberrations were within the normal range when compared with historical controls with the exception of dicentrics (0.3% per cell, which is a 10-fold increase) an

Bomb 137Cs in modern honey reveals a regional soil control on pollutant cycling by plants.

137Cs is a long-lived (30-year radioactive half-life) fission product dispersed globally by mid-20th century atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. Here we show that vegetation thousands of kilometers from testing sites continues to cycle 137Cs because it mimics potassium, and consequently, bees magnify this radionuclide in honey. There were no atmospheric weapons tests in the eastern United States, but most honey here has detectable 137Cs at >0.03 Bq kg-1, and in the southeastern U.S., activities can be >500 times higher. By measuring honey, we show regional patterns in the biogeochemical cycli

Facile synthesis, characterisation and application of zinc ferrite in removal of uranium from water by adsorption.

The present study features about the adsorption efficacy of Zinc ferrite (ZnFe₂O₄) in removing uranium from both synthetic and real groundwater samples. ZnFe₂O₄ was synthesized via the Solution Combustion Method and subsequently characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and spectroscopic techniques, including Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, to assess its structural properties. The textural characteristics of the synthesized material were examined through N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm analysis. Furthermore, X-ray

Volatile organic compounds in the unsaturated zone from radioactive wastes.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often comingled with low-level radioactive wastes (LLRW), but little is known about subsurface VOC emanations from LLRW landfills. The current study systematically quantified VOCs associated with LLRW over an 11-yr period at the USGS Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) in southwestern Nevada. Unsaturated-zone gas samples of VOCs were collected by adsorption on resin cartridges and analyzed by thermal desorption and GC/MS. Sixty of 87 VOC method analytes were detected in the 110-m-thick unsaturated zone surrounding a LLRW disposal facility. Chlorofluorocar
