Guidelines for comprehensive quality assurance in brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy treatment techniques can provide significant improvement in local control and overall survival, but only when quality assurance can be guaranteed. In the absence of well-trained personnel and inadequate equipment undesirable results usually follow. To establish brachytherapy quality assurance, basic requirements for three predetermined subdivisions of clinical institutions will be forwarded. These are: (1) centers having minimum requirements to provide brachytherapy, (2) intermediate centers such as regional or community hospitals, and (3) optimal centers such as university hospi

Setting up a Nuchal Translucency Clinic: What Radiologists Need to Know.

The purpose of this article was to discuss the process of setting up a nuchal translucency (NT) screening clinic in clinical practice, how to interpret the information in combination with other clinical tests, what to do if abnormal results are obtained, and to illustrate some of the fetal anomalies that are associated with an increased NT. The NT was initially implemented to predict the likelihood of a fetus with Down syndrome. Maternal age can be combined with fetal NT and maternal serum biochemistry (free β-hCG and PAPP-A) at 11 to 14 weeks to identify about 90% of affected fetuses. Setting

Non-hematologic diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis: Collaboration of radiology and pathology.

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a hematologic disease with a wide range of clinical courses ranging from an indolent condition with normal life expectancy to exceedingly aggressive disorder with a poor prognosis. The symptoms and signs of SM result from the release of mast cell mediators with heterogeneous functions, and/or organ damage from neoplastic mast cell infiltration, or both. Diagnostic criteria for SM are well-defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, the diagnosis of SM can be difficult when especially it is not in the differential diagnosis. Routinely used radiologic t

Impact of incidental thoracic spinal stenosis on outcomes following lumbar fusion: propensity score-matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Incidental thoracic spinal stenosis (TSS) is increasingly identified on whole-spine imaging, but its clinical significance in patients undergoing lumbar fusion remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether incidental radiologic TSS is associated with postoperative outcomes following lumbar fusion. METHODS: A retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study was conducted using a prospectively maintained registry [2010-2023] at a single tertiary centre. Patients with incidental radiologic TSS were matched 1:4 to controls without TSS based on age, sex, body mass index, and

Imaging Earthquake-related Injuries.

Earthquakes are a devastating phenomena of nature, causing significant destruction and extensive damage. Most earthquake-related injuries result from collapsing buildings, flying debris, and falling objects. Medical imaging modalities, in particular digital radiography, computed tomography, and sonography, are used to help manage and treat patients injured during an earthquake. Therefore, health care providers, including radiologic technologists, must be aware of the imaging considerations associated with earthquake-related injuries.

Bronchopulmonary amyloidosis--multiple tissue involvement and long follow-up.

A 59-year-old man developed a large asymptomatic left hilar mass due to amyloidosis of bronchial lymph nodes. Nodular involvement of the left lung and infiltration of the mucosa of the left lower lobe bronchus followed very gradually and a monoclonal gammopathy (IgA--Type Kappa) was demonstrated. Despite slowly progressive radiologic changes, the disease has had no effect on his health during a 20-year period of observation.

Distance Learning During the COVID-19 Lockdown and Self-Assessed Competency Development Among Radiology Residents in China: Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 lockdown, it was difficult for residency training programs to conduct on-site, hands-on training. Distance learning, as an alternative to in-person training, could serve as a viable option during this challenging period, but few studies have assessed its role. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the impact of distance learning during the lockdown on residents' self-assessed competency development and to explore the moderating effect of poor mental health on the associations. It is hypothesized that radiology residents who were trained through distance lea

Radiological findings of abnormalities associated with congenital Zika virus infection: conclusions from World Radiology Day 2016.

In July 2015, Brazil reported an association between Zika virus infection and Guillain-Barre syndrome, and then in October 2015, between Zika and microcephaly. Most countries and territories in the Region of the Americas were later affected by the virus, creating a public health emergency. Each year, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization commemorates World Radiology Day (WRD), which highlights the role of radiology in public health. In 2016, PAHO devoted its WRD efforts to the Zika infection. Experts and partners presented and discussed t

Professional identity satisfaction among radiotherapy technologists and medical physicists in Morocco: A cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Professional identity is increasingly recognised as a key determinant of workforce wellbeing, interprofessional collaboration, and staff retention within the medical radiation sciences. However, many quantitative studies rely on a single global indicator of professional identity, which limits understanding of the specific dimensions that may be most affected and amenable to organisational intervention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of Moroccan radiotherapy professionals, radiation therapy technologists (RTTs) and medical physicists (MPs). Identity satisfaction w

Financial Impact of Incidental Radiologic Findings During Living Kidney Donor Evaluation.

Living kidney donor (LKD) transplantation is an important alternative for the end-stage renal disease population and is preferred due to superior outcomes when compared with dialysis or deceased donor transplantation. LKD evaluation includes a computed tomography angiogram (CTA) for assessment of renal and renovascular anatomy. Incidental nonrenal findings are frequently noted during the CTAs, and these may have variable clinical significance. These incidental findings lead to further testing, procedures, and referrals, which incur additional cost. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the

Communication of unexpected and significant findings on chest radiographs with an automated PACS alert system.

PURPOSE: An integral part of realizing the enormous potential of imaging in patient care is close communication between radiologists and referring physicians. One key element of this process is the communication of unexpected significant findings. The authors examined the performance of a PACS-based alert system in the appropriate communication of reports containing unexpected significant findings to referring physicians. METHODS: A PACS-integrated key word system was developed such that an e-mail was sent to the referring clinician if a radiologist detected a significant unexpected finding.
