Radiomics prediction of surgery in ulcerative colitis refractory to medical treatment.

BACKGROUND: The surgeries in drug-resistant ulcerative colitis are determined by complex factors. This study evaluated the predictive performance of radiomics analysis on the basis of whether patients with ulcerative colitis in hospital were in the surgical or medical treatment group by discharge from hospital. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study used CT at admission of patients with US admitted from 2015 to 2022. The target of prediction was whether the patient would undergo surgery by the time of discharge. Radiomics features were extracted using the rectal wall at the le

Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula After Pancreatoduodenectomy: Can Radiomics Improve Clinical Risk Scores?

OBJECTIVE: Assess the potential added benefit of radiomics to clinical models for predicting postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Radiomics extracts quantitative data from medical imaging based on enhancement patterns. Clinical applications of radiomics have been investigated in pancreas, lung, breast, and prostate cancers. METHODS: This single center retrospective study included all patients with available preoperative CT scan before PD from 2009-2021. Radiomic features that reflect heterogeneity in enhancement patterns were e

Radiomics in early detection of bilio-pancreatic lesions: A narrative review.

Radiomics is transforming the field of early detection of bilio-pancreatic lesions, offering significant advancements in diagnostic accuracy and personalized treatment planning. By extracting high-dimensional data from medical images such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET), radiomics reveals complex patterns that remain undetectable through traditional imaging evaluation. This review synthesizes recent developments in radiomics, particularly its application to early detection of pancreatic cancer (PC) and biliary duct cancer (B

Radiomics based on BPX images to detect abnormal bone mineral density.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal bone mineral density (BMD) is a major contributor to bone fragility and fractures. While dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) are the primary diagnostic modalities, both methods are associated with additional radiation exposure and costs. This study investigates the feasibility of using radiomics to establish an automated tool for identifying patients at high risk for BMD abnormality based on biplanar X-ray radiography (BPX) images. METHODS: A total of 906 BPX scans from 453 subjects, including 275 females, were included in thi

Comprehensive linkage between molecular biology and imaging radiomics for thyroid nodules.

Thyroid nodules are common, with a prevalence of approximately 70% on thyroid ultrasonography; approximately 5% of these nodules are malignant. Distinguishing malignant and benign thyroid nodules is critical for clinical management. Clinicians can judiciously select patients for fine-needle aspiration, understand the cytology results and subsequent follow-up, and determine surveillance strategies for non-operated nodules. The challenge in selecting thyroid nodules for fine-needle aspiration is to avoid the diagnosis of small, clinically insignificant cancers without missing more severe disease

From pixels to prognosis: radiomics and AI in Alzheimer's disease management.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the leading cause of dementia, poses a growing global health challenge due to an aging population. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for optimizing treatment and management, yet traditional diagnostic methods often fall short in addressing the complexity of AD pathology. Recent advancements in radiomics and artificial intelligence (AI) offer novel solutions by integrating quantitative imaging features and machine learning algorithms to enhance diagnostic and prognostic precision. This review explores the application of radiomics and AI in AD, focusing on key i

Nonenhanced CT-Based radiomics model enhances PTC detection in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a common benign thyroid disease that often coexists with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Owing to the diffuse changes in the thyroid caused by HT, PTCs can be challenging to detect using conventional imaging modalities such as ultrasound and CT. The aim of this study was to develop a radiomics model based on nonenhanced CT (NECT) to predict the presence of PTC in the patients with HT, thereby improving early diagnostic accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included pathologically confirmed HT patients with or without PTC who u

A Novel Data Augmentation Method for Radiomics Analysis Using Image Perturbations.

Radiomics extracts hundreds of features from medical images to quantitively characterize a region of interest (ROI). When applying radiomics, imbalanced or small dataset issues are commonly addressed using under or over-sampling, the latter being applied directly to the extracted features. Aim of this study is to propose a novel balancing and data augmentation technique by applying perturbations (erosion, dilation, contour randomization) to the ROI in cardiac computed tomography images. From the perturbed ROIs, radiomic features are extracted, thus creating additional samples. This approach wa

Radiomics models to predict bone marrow metastasis of neuroblastoma using CT.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow is the leading site for metastasis from neuroblastoma and affects the prognosis of patients with neuroblastoma. However, the accurate diagnosis of bone marrow metastasis is limited by the high spatial and temporal heterogeneity of neuroblastoma. Radiomics analysis has been applied in various cancers to build accurate diagnostic models but has not yet been applied to bone marrow metastasis of neuroblastoma. METHODS: We retrospectively collected information from 187 patients pathologically diagnosed with neuroblastoma and divided them into training and validation sets in

CT-based radiomics predicts adjacent vertebral fracture after percutaneous vertebral augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Adjacent vertebral fracture (AVF) is a frequent complication following percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA). While radiomics is widely utilized in the field of spinal medicine, its application for assessing the risk of AVF in post-PVA patients remains limited. OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop and validate predictive models using machine learning algorithms for radiomics and clinical risk factors to assess the risk of AVF after PVA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 158 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures who underwent PVA at our hosp

Radiomics-based aortic flow profile characterization with 4D phase-contrast MRI.

4D PC MRI of the aorta has become a routinely available examination, and a multitude of single parameters have been suggested for the quantitative assessment of relevant flow features for clinical studies and diagnosis. However, clinically applicable assessment of complex flow patterns is still challenging. We present a concept for applying radiomics for the quantitative characterization of flow patterns in the aorta. To this end, we derive cross-sectional scalar parameter maps related to parameters suggested in literature such as throughflow, flow direction, vorticity, and normalized helicity

Classification of nasal polyps and inverted papillomas using CT-based radiomics.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal polyp (NP) and inverted papilloma (IP) are two common types of nasal masses. And their differentiation is essential for determining optimal surgical strategies and predicting outcomes. Thus, we aimed to develop several radiomic models to differentiate them based on computed tomography (CT)-extracted radiomic features. METHODS: A total of 296 patients with nasal polyps or papillomas were enrolled in our study. Radiomics features were extracted from non-contrast CT images. For feature selection, three methods including Boruta, random forest, and correlation coefficient were us
