Embeddings hidden layers learning for neural network compression.

Sequence modeling neural networks are being deployed over a growing number of applications, a phenomenon partially motivated by the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), Neural Networks often characterized by billions of parameters. Such a size poses an obstacle to their deployment in constrained devices, which motivates the development of compression methods. In this work, we introduce a new parameter-sharing method that leverages the embedding matrix to learn the model's hidden layers. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we present a new architecture family called ShareBERT, which can preser

Complementary cortical and thalamic contributions to cell type-specific striatal activity dynamics during movement.

Coordinated motor behavior emerges from information flow across brain regions. How long-range inputs drive cell type-specific activity within motor circuits remains unclear. The dorsolateral striatum (DLS) contains direct- and indirect-pathway medium spiny neurons (dMSNs and iMSNs) with distinct roles in movement control. In mice performing skilled locomotion, we recorded from dMSNs, iMSNs, and their cortical and thalamic inputs identified by monosynaptic rabies tracing. A recurrent neural network (RNN) classifier and clustering analysis revealed functionally heterogeneous subpopulations in ea

Eye-LRCN: A Long-Term Recurrent Convolutional Network for Eye Blink Completeness Detection.

Computer vision syndrome causes vision problems and discomfort mainly due to dry eye. Several studies show that dry eye in computer users is caused by a reduction in the blink rate and an increase in the prevalence of incomplete blinks. In this context, this article introduces Eye-LRCN, a new eye blink detection method that also evaluates the completeness of the blink. The method is based on a long-term recurrent convolutional network (LRCN), which combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) for feature extraction with a bidirectional recurrent neural network that performs sequence learning

Characteristics of sequential activity in networks with temporally asymmetric Hebbian learning.

Sequential activity has been observed in multiple neuronal circuits across species, neural structures, and behaviors. It has been hypothesized that sequences could arise from learning processes. However, it is still unclear whether biologically plausible synaptic plasticity rules can organize neuronal activity to form sequences whose statistics match experimental observations. Here, we investigate temporally asymmetric Hebbian rules in sparsely connected recurrent rate networks and develop a theory of the transient sequential activity observed after learning. These rules transform a sequence o

Distinct resting-state effective connectivity of large-scale networks in first-episode and recurrent major depression disorder: evidence from the REST-meta-MDD consortium.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown disrupted effective connectivity in the large-scale brain networks of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, it is unclear whether these changes differ between first-episode drug-naive MDD (FEDN-MDD) and recurrent MDD (R-MDD). METHODS: This study utilized resting-state fMRI data from 17 sites in the Chinese REST-meta-MDD project, consisting of 839 patients with MDD and 788 normal controls (NCs). All data was preprocessed using a standardized protocol. Then, we performed a granger causality analysis to calculate the effectivity conn

Brain structural abnormalities in adult major depressive disorder revealed by voxel- and source-based morphometry: evidence from the REST-meta-MDD Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies on major depressive disorder (MDD) have identified an extensive range of brain structural abnormalities, but the exact neural mechanisms associated with MDD remain elusive. Most previous studies were performed with voxel- or surface-based morphometry which were univariate methods without considering spatial information across voxels/vertices. METHODS: Brain morphology was investigated using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and source-based morphometry (SBM) in 1082 MDD patients and 990 healthy controls (HCs) from the REST-meta-MDD Consortium. We first examined gr

Large-scale multivariate forecasting models for Dengue - LSTM versus random forest regression.

Effective management of seasonal diseases such as dengue fever depends on timely deployment of control measures prior to the high transmission season. As the epidemic season fluctuates from year to year, the availability of accurate forecasts of incidence can be decisive in attaining control of such diseases. Obtaining such forecasts from classical time series models has proven a difficult task. Here we propose and compare machine learning models incorporating feature selection, such as LASSO and Random Forest regression with LSTM a deep recurrent neural network, to forecast weekly dengue incid

Neural-network maps for two-parameter modeling of bistability and codimension-two bifurcations in two-dimensional flow dynamical systems.

We develop a machine-learning approach to reproduce the behavior of two versions of the van der Pol oscillator exhibiting a subcritical Andronov-Hopf bifurcation, with or without a codimension-2 Bautin point. We construct a neural-network model that functions as a recurrent map and train it on short segments of oscillator trajectories. The results show that, despite its relatively simple architecture of neural network, the trained map is capable of capturing the key dynamical features of the original oscillators, even though corresponding examples are absent from the training data. In a two-di

A comprehensive analysis of the artificial neural networks model for predicting monkeypox outbreaks.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that causes outbreaks in various countries, significantly impacting public health and healthcare systems. Effective preparedness and response efforts require accurately predicting the severity of these outbreaks. Currently, there are no publicly released studies for nations like Chile and Mexico on monkeypox, leading to this study's creation. We use a neural network model with a time series dataset of monkeypox cases from multiple countries, including Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Chile, and Mexico. The Levenberg-Marquardt learning technique is employed to de

Gliomas as network diseases: Neuron-tumor interactions, connectome disruption, and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Gliomas are increasingly understood as disorders of distributed brain networks rather than focal lesions confined within radiographic margins. Emerging evidence suggests that glioma cells interact with neural circuits, alter structural and functional connectivity, and contribute to cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and functional decline through network-level mechanisms. METHODS: This structured narrative review synthesizes preclinical, molecular, neuroimaging, and clinical evidence on how gliomas disrupt the brain connectome. Evidence is organized into sections on neuron-glioma intera

Complexity and dynamics of partially symmetric random neural networks.

Neural circuits exhibit structured connectivity, including an overrepresentation of reciprocal connections between neuron pairs. Despite important advances, a full understanding of how such partial symmetry in connectivity shapes neural dynamics remains elusive. Here we ask how correlations between reciprocal connections in a random, recurrent neural network affect phase-space complexity, defined as the exponential proliferation rate (with network size) of the number of fixed points that accompanies the transition to chaotic dynamics. We find a striking pattern: partial antisymmetry strongly a

Structured experience shapes strategy learning and neural dynamics in the medial entorhinal cortex.

Animals solve new, complex tasks by reusing and adapting prior knowledge. This flexibility depends not only on the content of experience but also on its structure. Early training curricula are especially important: poorly structured experiences can hinder abstraction and limit generalization. However, the neural mechanisms through which experience shapes future learning remain unclear. Here, we trained recurrent neural networks (RNNs) on an odor timing task used to study complex timing behavior in mice and then tested the model predictions with mouse behavior and medial entorhinal cortex recor…

Computational memory capacity predicts aging and cognitive decline.

Memory is a crucial cognitive function that deteriorates with age. However, this ability is normally assessed using cognitive tests instead of the architecture of brain networks. Here, we use reservoir computing, a recurrent neural network computing paradigm, to assess the linear memory capacities of neural-network reservoirs extracted from brain anatomical connectivity data in a lifespan cohort of 636 individuals. The computational memory capacity emerges as a robust marker of aging, being associated with resting-state functional activity, white matter integrity, locus coeruleus signal intens
