Acoustic and laryngographic measures of the laryngeal reflexes of linguistic prominence and vocal effort in German.

This study uses acoustic and physiological measures to compare laryngeal reflexes of global changes in vocal effort to the effects of modulating such aspects of linguistic prominence as sentence accent, induced by focus variation, and word stress. Seven speakers were recorded by using a laryngograph. The laryngographic pulses were preprocessed to normalize time and amplitude. The laryngographic pulse shape was quantified using open and skewness quotients and also by applying a functional version of the principal component analysis. Acoustic measures included the acoustic open quotient and spec

The effect of the 226-Hz probe level on contralateral acoustic stapedius reflex thresholds.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the 226-Hz probe level on the acoustic stapedius reflex threshold. METHOD: Contralateral reflex thresholds for a 1000-Hz pure-tone stimulus were obtained from 40 young adults with normal hearing using an experimental system at four 226-Hz probe levels (70, 75, 80, and 85 dB SPL) with a repeated measures experimental design. RESULTS: A repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that as the probe level increased over this 15-dB range, there was a mean decrease in reflex threshold of 2.5 dB SPL (p < .001), with the largest dec

Detection of the acoustic stapedius reflex in infants using wideband energy reflectance and admittance.

This study examined the measurement of the contralateral acoustic stapedius reflex in six-week-old infants and adults using wideband shifts in admittance and energy reflectance (YR). The reflex activator was bandpass noise from 2,500 to 11,000 Hz presented at a maximum spectrum level of 51 dB SPL measured in the ear canal. Reflexes were detected by calculating a cross-correlation between one-twelfth-octave measurements of YR for the highest activator level and responses to lower levels. The reflex-induced shifts in YR for the infant ears were similar in pattern to adult responses but were nois

The acoustic reflex for filtered broadband stimuli: a lesser contribution of the lower frequency neurons.

The effects of the cut-off frequency of the filtered broadband stimuli on the human acoustic reflex (AR) were examined to observe the relation between the area of excitation in the cochlea and the AR response. The results obtained have indicated that all the input from the cochlear region does not equally contribute to trigger the AR equally; i.e., there is a lesser contribution from the frequency region below 700 Hz.

The acoustic stapedial reflex as a prognostic indicator in sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss.

Forty consecutive patients with sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss treated similarly over a four-year period were studied retrospectively to determine a correlation between presence or absence of the acoustic stapedial reflex (ASR) and recovery of hearing. Six patients were dropped from the study because of incomplete data. There were 42 affected ears in the remaining 34 patients. The ASR was present in 28 (67%) of the 42 affected ears that had either full or partial recovery. The ASR was not present in 11 ears (26%) in which there was no recovery. The ASR was present in three ears (7%) i

Auditory rate-induced facilitation of acoustic reflex thresholds in younger and middle-aged adults.

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) improve with an increase in click rates. The goal of this exploratory study was to compare the click-rate induced facilitation (cRIF) of ARTs across younger and middle-aged adults. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. STUDY SAMPLE: The younger adult group (18 to 27 years) included 16 women and 15 men. The middle-aged group (45 to 59 years) included 18 women and 12 men. ARTs were established at the click rates of 50 and 300/sec in each ear. The thresholds obtained at the rate of 300/sec were subtracted from those obtained at the rate of 50/sec to derive the cR

[Dynamic range of acoustic reflex and its importance for hearing aid evaluation (author's transl)].

It is reported on the dynamic range of acoustic reflex in the case of normal hearing. Stimulation is carried out with speech noise under free field conditions. The sensitivity of impedance measurement is increased by using an averager, which enables acoustic reflex measurements at sound pressure levels of about 70 dB. Further an exact evaluation of input-output-characteristics becomes possible by this procedure. Basing on this consideration the possibility of objective hearing aid evaluation is discussed. The fundamental point of this technique should be the compensation of pathological input-

Acoustic reflex threshold and loudness discomfort level: relationships in children with profound hearing losses.

Acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) and loudness discomfort levels (LDL) were obtained from 51 ears of 34 deaf children using broad band noise and pure tones. Both thresholds and levels were recorded using the psychophysical method of tracking. Results indicate that the relationship between ART and LDL is at variance with similar data for normal hearing individuals. Specifically, in over 39% of these deaf children LDL was obtained at a lower intensity than ART. Implications for hearing aid fitting with deaf children are discussed.

A novel method for measurement of the recto-anal inhibitory reflex using anal acoustic reflectometry.

AIM: The recto-anal inhibitory reflex (RAIR) is currently measured using manometry catheters, which potentially distort the anal canal. Anal acoustic reflectometry (AAR) is considered to be a catheter-free technique and primarily measures the function of the internal anal sphincter. We sought to determine if RAIR could be measured using AAR. METHOD: Patients aged 18 and over attending the hospital for investigation of pelvic floor dysfunction were included. AAR parameters were obtained before (prerectal distension) and after (postrectal distension) inflation of a rectal balloon catheter with

Age-related changes in the acoustic startle reflex in Fischer 344 and Long Evans rats.

The behavioral consequences of age-related changes in the auditory system were studied in Fischer 344 (F344) rats as a model of fast aging and in Long Evans (LE) rats as a model of normal aging. Hearing thresholds, the strength of the acoustic startle responses (ASRs) to noise and tonal stimuli, and the efficiency of the prepulse inhibition (PPI) of ASR were assessed in young-adult, middle-aged, and aged rats of both strains. Compared with LE rats, F344 rats showed larger age-related hearing threshold shifts, and the amplitudes of their startle responses were mostly lower. Both rat strains dem

[Inverted acoustic reflex: an analysis of its morphological characteristics in different physiological and pathological situations].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Inverted acoustic reflex (IAR) or inverted acoustic effect is the name given to the positive deflexion observed during the carrying out of an admittancemetry when the ear is subjected to a high intensity sound, rather than the typical negative deflexion due to the contraction of the middle ear musculature. The objective of the paper is to analyze the morphology of the IAR by relating it to the situations (physiological or pathological) in which this effect appears with the aim of establishing a pathogenic hypothesis. METHODS: We study the admittance traces obtaine

Prediction of hearing levels from acoustic reflex thresholds in persons with high-frequency hearing losses.

This study examined the precision of the bivariate method in subjects with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. The current bivariate data effectively separated normal hearing subjects from those with pure tone averages of greater than 32 dB HL, in a manner consistent with the results of Popelka and Trumpf (1976) and Margolis and Fox (1977b). However, for persons with high-frequency losses the prediction of hearing levels from acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) appears to be complicated. Moderate hearing losses involving 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz ("speech frequencies") as well as higher frequ

Pressurized Wideband Acoustic Stapedial Reflex Thresholds: Normal Development and Relationships to Auditory Function in Infants.

This study analyzed effects of pressurization on wideband acoustic stapedial-muscle reflex (ASR) tests in infants cared for in normal newborn (NN) and neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Effects of hearing-screening outcomes on ASR threshold measurements were also evaluated, and a subsequent longitudinal study established normative threshold ranges over the first year after birth. An initial experiment compared thresholds in newborns measured at ambient pressure in the ear canal and at the tympanometric peak pressure. ASR thresholds for broadband noise were higher for ears that did not pass
