Prevalence of spinocerebellar degenerations in the Hokuriku district in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of disease subtypes of spinocerebellar degenerations (SCDs) varies between countries, and even between areas within a country. We report unprecedented epidemiologic data on SCDs in the Hokuriku district, which is located in the central, western part of Japan. METHODS: Clinical and genetic data on SCD patients were obtained via questionnaires distributed to all the departments of neurology, psychiatry and internal medicine in the Hokuriku district (n = 418). RESULTS: Among the SCD patients, autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias (ADCAs) were noted in 40.4%, multiple

Understanding of solitary death in people living in the community: A scoping review.

This scoping review aimed to understand the comprehensive evidence on solitary death occurring in the community. A database search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL using the following keywords: live alone, solitary death, and community. A manual search was also conducted using Google Scholar. Sixteen studies that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. Approximately 60% of studies were retrospective, and 53.3% were conducted in Japan. The studies included in the review described solitary death using different expressions. However, they consistently encompassed th

Rapid review on healthy ageing interventions that incorporate action on climate change and sustainability in cities and communities.

OBJECTIVES: Intersecting global trends of population ageing and climate change have far-reaching implications for health and sustainability in cities and community contexts. Older adults are highly impacted by climate change, and yet reports of the implementation of the World Health Organizations' Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) approach rarely examine the impacts of climate change on older adults. There is limited research on climate change interventions that target older populations. This rapid scoping review characterizes existing evidence in this area, including climate and heal

Service Awareness Among Older Adults Experiencing Barriers to Food and Eating.

OBJECTIVE: To explore (1) the services older adults use to address the barriers to food access they face and (2) how they found out about these services. DESIGN: Semistructured, basic descriptive qualitative in-person interviews. SETTING: Senior center and participants' homes. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of 24 older adults recruited from suburban and urban settings. Primarily Black females, living alone, and able to leave home without help. PHENOMENON OF INTEREST: Financial and nonfinancial barriers to food access, awareness of services available. ANALYSIS: Codes were assigned to p

Beyond Residence: A Mobility-based Approach for Improved Evaluation of Human Exposure to Environmental Hazards.

Standard environmental hazard exposure assessment methods have been primarily based on residential places, neglecting individuals' hazard exposures due to activities outside home neighborhood and underestimating peoples' overall hazard exposures. To address this limitation, this study proposes a novel mobility-based index for the hazard exposure evaluation. Using large-scale human mobility data, we quantify the extent of population dwell time in high environmental hazard places in 239 US counties for three environmental hazards. We explore how human mobility extends the reach of environmental

Neighborhoods and child abuse: Multiple informant perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Using data from the nationally representative longitudinal Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, the current study sought to examine associations between neighborhood disorder and physical characteristics of the neighborhood at child age three with the likelihood of experiencing physical and psychological abuse and neglect at age five. METHODS: Negative binomial regression and zero inflated negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the associations. RESULTS: Resident perceptions of neighborhood disorder and outside observation of neighborhood physical ch

The neighborhood environment and its association with the spatio-temporal footprint of tobacco consumption and changes in smoking-related behaviors in a Swiss urban area.

This study aimed to evaluate the association of the neighborhood environment with the spatio-temporal dependence of tobacco consumption and changes in smoking-related behaviors in a Swiss urban area. Data were obtained from the CoLaus cohort (2003-2006, 2009-2012, and 2014-2017) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Local Moran's I was performed to assess the spatial dependence of tobacco consumption. Prospective changes in tobacco consumption and the location of residence of participants were assessed through Cox regressions. Analyses were adjusted by individual and neighborhood data. The neighborhood en

Assessing How Social Exposures Are Integrated in Exposome Research: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Exposome research aims to describe and understand the extent to which all the exposures in human environments may affect our health over the lifetime. However, the way in which humans interact with their environment is socially patterned. Failing to account for social factors in research exploring the exposome may underestimate the magnitude of the effect of exposures or mask inequalities in the distribution of both exposures and outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the extent to which social factors appear in the exposome literature, the manner in which they are used in emp

Examining Time-Variant Spatial Dependence of Urban Places and Shootings.

Place-based interventions are increasingly implemented to address firearm violence. While research on the social determinants of health and criminological theories suggest that the built environment significantly influences health outcomes and the spatial distribution of crime, little is known about the attraction between urban places and shootings. The present study adds to the literature on firearm violence and micro-place research by exploring the spatial dependence in a Midwest metropolitan area between shootings and bus stops, vacant properties, alcohol outlets, and other locations that h

Operationalizing Social Environments in Cognitive Aging and Dementia Research: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Social environments are a contributing determinant of health and disparities. This scoping review details how social environments have been operationalized in observational studies of cognitive aging and dementia. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed and Web of Science identified studies of social environment exposures and late-life cognition/dementia outcomes. Data were extracted on (1) study design; (2) population; (3) social environment(s); (4) cognitive outcome(s); (5) analytic approach; and (6) theorized causal pathways. Studies were organized using a 3-tiered social ecolog

Method-Specific Suicide Rates and Accessibility of Means.

Background: Few studies have investigated whether means accessibility is related to the spatial distribution of suicide. Aims: To examine the hypothesis that indicators of the accessibility to specific suicide methods were associated with method-specific suicide rates in Taipei City, Taiwan. Method: Smoothed standardized mortality ratios for method-specific suicide rates across 432 neighborhoods and their associations with means accessibility indicators were estimated using Bayesian hierarchical models. Results: The proportion of single-person households, indicating the ease of burning charcoa

Building community resilience to prevent and mitigate community impact of gun violence: conceptual framework and intervention design.

INTRODUCTION: The USA has the highest rate of community gun violence of any developed democracy. There is an urgent need to develop feasible, scalable and community-led interventions that mitigate incident gun violence and its associated health impacts. Our community-academic research team received National Institutes of Health funding to design a community-led intervention that mitigates the health impacts of living in communities with high rates of gun violence. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We adapted 'Building Resilience to Disasters', a conceptual framework for natural disaster preparedness, to

Turning a Blind Eye: Public Support of Emergency Housing Policies for Sex Offenders.

In this study, we examine the influences of citizen decision making in the context of four policy scenarios that would affect the living conditions of sex offenders (SOs) residing at an "emergency shelter" budget motel. We surveyed 773 citizens in an online survey about their support for four policy scenarios that would improve the living conditions of SOs: (a) at no cost to the respondent, (b) in exchange for a US$100 tax increase, and (c) by relocating SOs within the respondent's neighborhood (i.e., "in my backyard"/IMBY scenario). The fourth scenario involved moving nearby SOs into substand
