[Arteriovenous communication of the retina--case report].

In this paper I have described a rare case of typical arteriovenous communication of the retina (ACVR), also called racemose haemangioma, but with some atypical traits. A case of a young white 22-year-old woman is presented. AVCR was recognised in her left eye, II stage according to Archer's classification, therefore neither intracranial haemangioma nor vascular decompensation of retina was observed. In the standard ophthalmic examination, including automated perymetry and fluorescein angiography, the following phenomena were not seen yet or they were rarely described: pigmented muffs on some …

Histopathology of the human retina in retinitis pigmentosa.

The term, 'retinitis pigmentosa', refers to a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases that cause degeneration of rod and cone photoreceptors in the human retina. Loss of photoreceptor cells is usually followed by alterations in the retinal pigment epithelium and retinal glia. Ultimately, degenerative changes occur in the inner retinal neurons, blood vessels, and optic nerve head. This chapter provides background information on the genetics of retinitis pigmentosa and a summary of the histopathologic alterations in human retinas caused by this disease. Detailed information is provided on the …

Mutations affecting development of the zebrafish retina.

In a large scale screen for genetic defects in zebrafish embryogenesis we identified 49 mutations affecting development of the retina. Based on analysis of living embryos as well as histological sections, we grouped the isolated mutations into six phenotypic categories. (1) Mutations in three loci result in a loss of wild-type laminar pattern of the neural retina. (2) Defects in four loci lead to an abnormal specification of the eye anlagen. Only one eye frequently forms in this class of mutants. (3) Seven loci predominantly affect development of the outer retinal layers. Mutants in this categ…

Development of microglial topography in human retina.

The development of microglial topography in wholemounts of human retina has been examined in the age range 10-25 weeks gestation (WG) using histochemistry and immunohistochemistry for CD45 and major histocompatibility complex class II antigens. Microglia were present in three planes corresponding to the developing nerve fibre layer/ganglion cell layer, the inner plexiform layer and the outer plexiform layer. Distribution patterns of cells through the retinal thickness and across the retinal surface area varied with gestational age. Microglia were elongated in superficial retina, large and rami…

Microangiopathy of brain, retina, and inner ear.

Microangiopathy of brain, retina, and inner ear is a rare syndrome manifesting as arteriolar occlusions of the brain, retina, and inner ear, with resultant encephalopathy, visual, and hearing loss. Despite exhaustive laboratory examinations in these patients, no evidence of a systemic disease can be found. We treated and followed an adolescent with this disorder who initially presented with a branch retinal artery occlusion. A unique finding in this case was retinal vessel wall hyperfluorescence noted five days prior to retinal infarction. The patient developed recurrent branch artery occlusio…

Selective regeneration of photoreceptors in goldfish retina.

Previous work has shown that the neural retina in adult goldfish can regenerate. Following retinal damage elicited by surgical or cytotoxic lesions, missing neurons are replaced by foci of proliferating neuroepithelial cells, which previous studies have suggested are derived from rod precursors. In the intact retina, rod precursors proliferate but produce only new rods. The regenerative responses observed previously have involved replacement of neurons in all retinal layers; selective regeneration of specific neuronal types (except for rod photoreceptors) has not been reported. In the experime…

Regulatory mechanisms in melatonin biosynthesis in retina.

The vertebrate retina produces melatonin in a light-dependent rhythmic fashion, synchronized with, but independent from the rhythm of the hormone formation in the pineal gland. This review summarizes the current status of our knowledge on regulatory mechanisms involved in controlling the retinal melatonin biosynthesis. Special emphasis is given to the role and mode of action of dopamine and GABA, two established retinal neurotransmitters, as well as that of second messengers (cyclic AMP, calcium ions). Comparisons are made between lower vertebrates and mammals.

Quantitation of ischemic damage in the rat retina.

In order to determine thresholds for irreversible cellular injury in the rat retina, timed acute no-flow ischemic episodes of 30-180 min duration were produced by elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) above systolic pressure. Quantitation of irreversible degeneration and cell loss following a 2-week post-ischemic interval was performed by computer-assisted measurements from histologic sections. Alterations of thickness of retinal layers and linear cell density were determined for ischemia of selected durations (30, 60, 80, 90, 120 and 180 min). Different thresholds were evident for inner and…

Retina's eye view of the implant lens.

Using simple inexpensive equipment, still macro photographs were obtained of the ciliary body and lens capsule of donor eyes during the procedure of intraocular lens implantation. It is shown that implant lens loops, while correctly bag-implanted, can catch in the ciliary sulcus.

[Circulatory disorders of the retina and optic nerve].

Amaurosis fugax and retinal artery occlusion are mainly caused by emboli originating from the carotid arteries and the heart. Ischemic ophthalmopathy is the result of severe carotid or ophthalmic artery stenosis. Retinal vein occlusions probably develop if the venous outflow is hampered or if blood viscosity is increased. Optic nerve infarction is now regarded as a localized disease of the small vessels. In all circulatory disorders of the retina and the optic nerve a careful medical and neurologic-angiologic work-up is mandatory. For arterial occlusions of the retina or the optic nerve, no th…

Cholinergic amacrine cells in the rat retina.

Staining of rat retinal wholemounts with a monoclonal antibody against choline-acetyl-transferase (ChAT) reveals two matching populations of amacrine cells in pigmented and albino rat retinae. One population has cell bodies in the inner nuclear layer (INL). Their dendrites are confined to a narrow stratum in the outer half of the inner plexiform layer (IPL). The other, displaced, population has cell bodies in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) with dendrites stratifying in the middle of the IPL. The density changes with eccentricity, ranging from 1,700 cells/mm2 centrally to 600 cells/mm2 in the pe…

Effects of glycosylation inhibitors on the frog retina.

Effects of the intraocular injection of three inhibitors of glycosylation (tunicamycin, castanospermine, and swainsonine) on the rhodopsin content and the integrity of disc membranes in frog retina were studied. The administration of 10 or 100 micrograms of tunicamycin resulted in a 78% loss of rhodopsin in the frog retina which also exhibited a significant reduction in the length of photoreceptor outer segments (as examined under light microscope). This suggests that the synthesis and/or insertion of rhodopsin into the disc membrane is inhibited by tunicamycin. In contrast, injections of up t…

Lipoperoxide formation in the retina in ocular siderosis.

Insertion of iron nail into the vitreous cavity provoke the formation of lipoperoxide in the retina. In acord with the increase in lipoperoxide in the retina, ERG began to decrease. In vitro experiment using isolated retina, lipoperoxide was found to be increased in the presence of ferric or ferrous ions, while it was inhibited by adding antioxidants or ethylenediamine tetraacetate. From these results, direct cause of retinal degeneration in siderosis could be ascribed to the formation of lipoperosice by iron-ions liberated from the piece of iron, resulting into the degeneration of the visual …
