Extent of disability following traumatic extremity amputation.

Extremity amputation is a devastating injury. Forty-two patients who sustained traumatic limb amputation were contacted 3-57 months (mean, 25 months; median, 24 months) after injury to evaluate residual disability and to determine what factors were associated with a good recovery. There were 35 men and 7 women with ages ranging from 5 to 73 years (mean, 34 years). Amputation was the result of a motor vehicle crash in 18, work-related injury in 11, motorcycle crash in 9, and other causes in 4. There were 46 amputations done: 8 above-knee (AK), 25 below-knee (BK), 5 above-elbow (AE), and 9 below

Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction in Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction is an established surgical technique to restore UCL deficiency, especially in the overhead throwing athlete. Over the past decade, the number of patients requiring UCL reconstruction has increased significantly, particularly in the adolescent patient population. Return-to-play rates after UCL reconstruction reported in the literature have ranged from 33% to 92%, and a recent systematic review noted a return-to-play rate of 89.40% in all high school athletes. PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcomes, particularly return-to-play rates and subj

Putting Policy Into Practice: School-Level Compliance With and Implementation of State Concussion Laws.

CONTEXT: Each year, approximately 2 million US children 18 years or younger sustain a concussion, a type of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Concussions can have detrimental effects on physical, cognitive, emotional, or sleep health. POLICY: Between 2009 and 2014, all 50 US states and Washington, District of Columbia, enacted state concussion laws aimed to increase awareness about concussion and reduce the prevalence and severity of this injury. Most state laws include the following core tenets: (1) immediate removal from play after an actual or suspected concussion; (2) medical clearance b

Sports Medicine: Concussion.

Sports-related concussion is a common injury in organized and recreational sports. Collision and contact sports are higher risk activities. Female athletes may be at more risk of concussion compared with male athletes; however, more research is needed. Evaluation of concussion involves assessments of multiple domains or clinical profiles, including vestibular, ocular, headache, cognitive, mood, fatigue, and other systems. Initial management consists of a short rest period followed by increasing activity that does not exacerbate symptoms. Cognitive modifications for school or work also are init

Natural disasters and physical health capital loss among school-age children.

An unexpected catastrophic natural disaster that dramatically changes the living environment disrupts educational opportunities for school-aged children, negatively affecting the cognitive and non-cognitive skills and educational achievement necessary for human capital development. However, little attention has been paid to the impact on children's physical health through reduction in physical activity opportunities. Given the positive correlation between academic and athletic performance, the educational returns from disaster-induced negative health shocks may have been underestimated. This s

Numeracy skills learning of children in Africa:-Are disabled children lagging behind?

Significant progress has been achieved in universal basic education in African countries since the late 1990s. This study provides empirical … ith multiple disabilities are constrained both by low school attendance and by poor numeracy skills return to schooling. The average differences in school performance across the high- versus low-numeracy skill country groups are larger than the within-group average differences for disabled versus non-disabled kids. This indicates that school enrolment and quality …

What happens when an athlete suffers a concussion outside of sport? An in-depth analysis of non-sport-related concussion in adolescent athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Sport-related concussion (SRC) has been widely studied in high school athletes, yet non-sport-related concussion (non-SRC) has received less attention. Thus, in a cohort of high school athletes diagnosed with non-SRC, we sought to: 1) describe demographic characteristics, medical history, and recovery patterns, and 2) compare injury severity and recovery outcomes across common non-SRC mechanisms. METHODS: The current retrospective cohort study included athletes aged 14-18 years who sustained non-SRCs and presented to a regional concussion center between 11/2017-04/2022. Concussi

The case for investment in eye health: systematic review and economic modelling analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess how the returns on investment from correcting refractive errors and cataracts in low- and middle-income countries compare with the returns from other global development interventions. METHODS: We adopted two complementary approaches to estimate benefit-cost ratios from eye health investment. First, we systematically searched PubMed® and Web of Science™ on 14 August 2023 for studies conducted in low-and-middle-income countries, which have measured welfare impacts associated with correcting refractive errors and cataracts. Using benefit-cost analysis, we compared these impa
