Jaundice in children is more often due to hepatic disease than obstruction. Differential considerations for obstructive jaundice in children include choledocholithiasis, choledochal cysts and rare neoplasms. Rhabdomyosarcoma, the most common soft tissue sarcoma in pediatric patients, typically involves the head and neck, genitourinary system and extremities. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the biliary tree is a rare entity. We present a 3-year-old boy with abrupt onset obstructive jaundice. Although initial imaging suggested a dilated biliary system with fusiform common bile duct, sludge, and po

BACKGROUND: Cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) mostly affects young girls. The current treatment protocols are based on trials done on patients under 21 years old. ERMS in women over 40 is rare, and studies on treatment and outcome are limited.
CASE: We report a case of a 41 year-old woman with cervical ERMS who was treated with radical hysterectomy followed by chemotherapy. She is currently disease-free.
CONCLUSION: Cervical ERMS in women over the age of 40 can be treated using protocols established for the pediatric population.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a rare pediatric soft tissue sarcoma, seldom involves the external ear. Congenital ichthyosis vulgaris (IV), a genetic disorder causing hyperkeratosis, has not been previously linked to RMS. We report the first case of embryonal RMS with unique extension in a patient with IV. A 13 year-old male with ichthyosis presented with a 1 year history of a progressive lesion in the right intertragic notch, unresponsive to antibiotics and topical therapies. Imaging revealed a mass infiltrating the parotid gland, external auditory canal, and sternocleidomastoid muscle. Wide surgica

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of depression and anxiety of lesbian and bisexual (LB) mothers raising children from a previous heterosexual relationship in a current same-sex relationship, on the basis of minority stress theory.
METHODS: 58 LB biological mothers, 33 LB co-mothers from same-sex relationships and 60 mothers from different-sex marriages participated in a questionnaire-based online survey. The groups were compared in terms of depression and anxiety severity (state and trait). In the LB groups, correlation analysis was conducted between the depende

Aberrant activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway has been reported for rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) and is implicated in survival of tumor cells as well as therapeutic resistance. In the present study, we searched for combination therapies with the dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor NVP-BEZ235 (BEZ235) in RMS. Here, we identify a synthetic lethal interaction of BEZ235 together with the lysosomotropic agent chloroquine (CQ), which is effective against embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS). BEZ235 and CQ at subtoxic concentrations synergize to induce apopt

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in childhood, the majority of which are of the embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ER) variety. Present day treatment protocols involve a combination of aggressive surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx is rare and unlike ER of other regions exhibits excellent response to multimodality treatment without the need for extensive surgery. We report a case of cervical metastases in a 29-year-old man 13 years after treatment of his laryngeal ER. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of late ne

BACKGROUND: Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare, aggressive pediatric thoracic malignancy and a sentinel tumor for DICER1 syndrome. Advanced PPB can mimic other pediatric sarcomas and complex cystic lung lesions, creating diagnostic and management pitfalls.
CASE PRESENTATION: A boy aged 2 years 11 months presented with progressive respiratory distress and fever due to a rapidly enlarging right hemithorax mass with marked mediastinal shift, near-complete right lung collapse, and recurrent pneumothorax. Initial CT-guided biopsy was interpreted as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) on limite

BACKGROUND: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (sarcoma botryoides) of the female genital tract is rare in the cervix. It tends to occur in children and young women, and appears to have a better prognosis than sarcoma botryoides of the vagina and uterus.
CASE: We report a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (sarcoma botryoides) presenting as a cervical polyp in a 19-year-old female. The tumor was composed of rhabdomyoblasts of varying differentiation dispersed within a loose, myxoid stroma, and formed a distinct 'cambium' layer beneath the epithelium. The patient was successfully treated with fertilit

Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor p27/Kip1 (p27) is a diagnostic and prognostic marker of various malignancies. Low expression of p27 reflects poor differentiation and poor prognosis, and an inverse correlation between the expression of p27 and degree of tumor malignancy has been reported. Because p27 mutation is extremely rare in human tumors, it is important to study the expression of p27 and its inactivator, p38/Jab1 (JAB1). Here we analyzed the expression of p27 and JAB1 by immunohistochemistry in embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (E-RMS). We first confirmed the expression of p27 and JAB1 i

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a highly aggressive pediatric neoplasm that originates from striated muscle or undifferentiated mesenchymal cells. Based on its histopathological characteristics, the World Health Organization categorizes RMS into four distinct subtypes: embryonal RMS, alveolar RMS, pleomorphic RMS, and sclerosing/spindle cell RMS. Embryonal RMS represents the predominant subtype and primarily manifests in the head and neck region, with the genitourinary system being the subsequent most frequent site of occurrence. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cervix (cERMS) is more insidious in

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix (cERMS) is rare and frequently associated with DICER1 mutations. We report 94 tumors that arose in patients aged 7 to 59 (median=23) years and presented with vaginal bleeding (52), protruding vaginal mass (17), cervical polyp (8), or expelled tumor fragments per vagina (5). Nine had DICER1 syndrome, 8 of whom had other syndromic manifestations including ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (7), multinodular goiter (3), pleuropulmonary blastoma (2), pineoblastoma (1), and osteosarcoma (1). Syndromic patients were younger than nonsyndromic patients (

Herein we evaluated a series of 21 embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas of the uterine corpus (ucERMS), a rare neoplasm, to characterize their morphology, genomics, and behavior. Patients ranged from 27 to 73 (median 52) years and tumors from 4 to 15 (median 9) cm, with extrauterine disease noted in two. Follow-up (median 16 months) was available for 14/21 patients; nine were alive and well, four died of disease, and one died from other causes. Most tumors (16/21) showed predominantly classic morphology, comprised of alternating hyper- and hypocellular areas of primitive small cells and differentiating

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue malignant musculoskeletal tumour and is the most prevalent soft-tissue sarcoma in the paediatric population. Although, Embryonal RMS of the biliary tree is a rare entity, however, it is the most common cause of paediatric malignant obstructive jaundice. We present a 4-year-old child who had symptoms of obstructive jaundice and palpable liver. The non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) features were consistent with choledochal cyst. However, contrast enhanced computed tomography and PET CT images revealed

We report two cases of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the cervix in teenagers presenting to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana within one month of each other. Between October and November 2019, two patients presented with ERMS of the cervix. They both underwent fertility-sparing surgery followed by chemotherapy with vincristine, actinomycin-D, and cyclophosphamide. Preoperative workup for the two patients was minimal due to limited availability and high cost of imaging in a low-resource setting. Both patients were discussed at a multidisciplinary tumor board meeting to guide

Intracranial parameningeal rhabdomyosarcomas are rare, aggressive, rapidly progressive paediatric malignancies that carry a poor prognosis. The authors report a case of a 2-year-old boy who initially presented with a left facial palsy, ataxia and, shortly after, bloody otorrhoea. MRI imaging was initially suggestive of a vestibular schwannoma. However, there was rapid progression of symptoms and further MRI imaging showed very rapid increase in tumour size with mass effect and development of a similar tumour on the contralateral side. A histological diagnosis of bilateral parameningeal embryon

In its classical form, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS, botryoid type) is a vaginal neoplasm occurring in infants and young girls and is often not considered in the differential diagnosis of uterine corpus and cervical spindle cell tumors in adult women. Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 25 cases of ERMS in women 20 years of age or older were analyzed. Patient age ranged from 20 to 89 years (mean, 44.4 y; median, 46 y), with 8 patients aged 20 to 39 years, 14 patients aged 40 to 59 years, and 3 patients older than 60 years of age. Tumors originated in the cervix in 20 case

Kabuki syndrome is a well-recognized syndrome characterized by facial dysmorphism and developmental delay/intellectual disability and in the majority of patients a germline variant in KMT2D is found. As somatic KMT2D variants can be found in 5-10% of tumors a tumor predisposition in Kabuki syndrome is discussed. So far less than 20 patients with Kabuki syndrome and a concomitant malignancy have been published. Here we report on a female patient with Kabuki syndrome and a c.2558_2559delCT germline variant in KMT2D who developed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) at 10 years. On tumor tissue w
