BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis and vasomotor rhinitis are harassing numerous patients and their risk factors have not been well investigated. Here, we try to identify their risk factors and distinguish these 2 diseases.
METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was implemented to discover the risk factors of allergic and vasomotor rhinitis. Based on previous studies, we selected 15 potential risk factors and the genome-wide summary statistics were extracted from the non-FinnGen consortium. The genome-wide summary statistics of rhinitis were obtained from the FinnGen consortium. …

Rhinitis is among the most common respiratory diseases in children. Nonallergic rhinitis, which involves nasal symptoms without evidence of systemic allergic inflammation or infection, is a heterogeneous entity with diverse manifestations and intensities. Nonallergic rhinitis accounts for 16%-89% of the chronic rhinitis cases, affecting 1%-50% (median 10%) of the total pediatric population. The clinical course of nonallergic rhinitis is generally rather mild and less likely to be associated with allergic comorbidities than allergic rhinitis. Here, we aimed to estimate the rate of coexisting co…

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated inflammatory reaction of the nasal mucosa triggered by various allergens, leading to nasal congestion, rhinorrhoea, sneezing, nasal itching, ocular redness, lacrimation, and postnasal dripping. This condition can also cause sleep disturbances and fatigue, which can affect productivity at work and academic performance, therefore posing substantial economic burden. Positive outcomes rely on efficacy of medications, potential adverse effects of medication, treatment response, and overall prognosis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility of t…

Diagnostic nasal cytology has been advocated for use in distinguishing allergic from nonallergic rhinitis. We sought to determine prospectively the frequency of nasal eosinophilia (NE) in 100 patients in whom having allergic rhinitis (AR), nonallergic rhinitis, and other atopic conditions not involving the respiratory tract have been diagnosed. A nasal smear was obtained from consenting adults using the Rhino-Probe curette. Patients taking local or systemic corticosteroids, those with chronic rhinitis associated with aspirin sensitivity, and those with sinusitis were excluded. All cytograms we…

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis medicomentosa (RM) is a form of non-allergic rhinitis caused by the use of nasal decongestants for longer than the recommended duration. Because of this problem of use, addiction to the drug occurs in individuals. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of RM patients to substance addiction.
METHODS: The study was planned as a prospective, multicentric study between September 2022 and September 2023. Patients diagnosed with RM were included in the study. Beck depression scale, Drug use disorders identification test, Substance Abuse Proclivity Scale were appl…

ObjectivesRhinitis, one of the most common inflammatory conditions of the nasal mucosa, is known to affect a large proportion of people worldwide. It is generally classified into allergic and non-allergic types and both are associated with several unpleasant symptoms. Several medications prescribed for different medical conditions can cause unpleasant rhinitis as an adverse effect, which is known as drug-induced non-allergic rhinitis. The aims of this article were to review the literature to identify drugs that could induce rhinitis, prevalence of drug-induced rhinitis, and the associated path…

Allergic rhinitis affects 20% of the population of the UK. It confers a significant health burden upon the individual as it affects the patient's quality of life and is associated with serious comorbidities including asthma, sinusitis and conjunctivitis. Owing to its prevalence, it has a significant economic impact through its effects on education, productivity and use of healthcare resources. This review focuses on the management of allergic rhinitis and potential future treatments, because of the lack of clear national guidelines and because this illness is often misdiagnosed and mismanaged.…

OBJECTIVE: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common diseases affecting adults. It is the most common chronic disease in children in the United States today and the fifth most common chronic disease in the United States overall. AR is estimated to affect nearly 1 in every 6 Americans and generates $2 to $5 billion in direct health expenditures annually. It can impair quality of life and, through loss of work and school attendance, is responsible for as much as $2 to $4 billion in lost productivity annually. Not surprisingly, myriad diagnostic tests and treatments are used in managing th…

BACKGROUND: There are many forms of rhinitis. Patients are diagnosed with non-allergic rhinitis when anatomic, infectious and allergic aetiologies have been excluded. The symptoms, including nasal congestion, blockage or obstruction, clear rhinorrhoea, sneezing and, less frequently, nasal itching, can range from mild to debilitating. It affects between 25% and 50% of patients with rhinitis. Several medications are widely used in the treatment of non-allergic rhinitis, including oral and topical nasal antihistamines, intranasal and (rarely) systemic corticosteroids, and anticholinergics. Allergic rhinitis (AR), the most common chronic disease in childhood is often ignored, misdiagnosed and/or mistreated. Undertreated AR impairs quality of life, exacerbates asthma and is a major factor in asthma development. It can involve the nose itself, as well as the organs connected with the nose manifesting a variety of symptoms. Evidence-based guidelines for AR therapy improve disease control. Recently, paediatric AR guidelines have been published by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and are available online, as are a patient care pathway for children with AR and as…

Sensory nerve endings within the airway epithelial cells and the solitary chemoreceptor cells, synapsing with sensory nerves, respond to airborne irritants. Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels (A1 and V1 subtypes, specifically) on these nerve endings initiate local antidromic reflexes resulting in the release of neuropeptides such as substance P and calcitonin G-related peptides. These neuropeptides dilate epithelial submucosal blood vessels and may therefore increase transudation across these vessels resulting in submucosal edema, congestion, and rhinitis. Altered expression or activi…

Occupational rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nose, which is characterised by intermittent or persistent symptoms, arising from causes and conditions attributable to a particular work environment and not from stimuli encountered outside the workplace. Its clinical symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhoea, itching, nasal airflow limitation are very similar to the symptoms of allergic rhinitis caused by other (classical) agents. Occupational allergic conjunctivitis is an IgE mediated disease, provoked by a substance in the air of the workplace. Its clinical signs (itchi…

BACKGROUND: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a clonal proliferative disorder of mast cells (MC) that causes pathological accumulation of mast cells in various tissues, which results in clinical symptoms (e.g. diarrhoea, urticaria) due to MC mediator release. Previous studies have shown that up to fifty percent of rhinitis symptoms in SM patients are non-allergic and it has been assumed that these nasal complaints in SM patients are due an increased nasal mast cell burden. Nevertheless, to date there are no data supporting this hypothesis.
OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate if the presence …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the role of vitamin D in chronic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).
RECENT FINDINGS: Vitamin D has been shown to have an immunomodulatory effect with a significant impact on immune function. Specifically, vitamin D regulates the mechanisms which suppress the inflammatory response and direct the differentiation fate of immune cells. Vitamin D has been shown to play an important role in asthma, and the concept of the unified airway model allows the extrapolation of vitamin D as a critical player in chronic rhinitis and rhinosinusitis.
SUMMARY: Recent findi…

Chronic rhinitis (CR) affects large populations worldwide, diagnosed in 40% of the population and is often associated with co-morbidities, such as asthma, sinusitis, rhinoconjunctivitis cognitive dysfunction, and leads to loss of work and school days. Recently, global clinical guidelines were proposed for allergic rhinitis (AR). Similarly, an Israeli expert panel, consisting of ENT and Allergy/Immunology specialists, was delegated to discuss the current approaches to CR (including allergic and non-allergic rhinitis) and to submit a consensus paper. The guidelines, briefly presented herein, des…
