Phosphorus availability is severely constrained in soda saline-alkali soils; yet the mechanisms by which arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi modulate rhizosphere microbial communities to alleviate the limitation are still unresolved. In the research, a microcosm experiment is conducted with metagenomic sequencing to investigate how inoculation with Rhizophagus intraradices influenced rhizosphere properties, phosphorus fractions, phosphatase activities, microbial community structure, P-cycling gene networks, and growth of Elaeagnus angustifolia under soda saline-alkali stress. The results demonst…

Aluminum (Al) toxicity in acidic soils severely constrains global crop production. Classical mechanisms of plant Al tolerance, established primarily in sterile laboratory systems, have centered on organic acid secretion. However, such mechanisms do not capture the critical contributions of rhizosphere microorganisms under field conditions. This review synthesizes current advances in microbe-mediated Al detoxification, aiming to reinterpret classical tolerance mechanisms from a microbial perspective and explore strategies for translating these insights into sustainable field applications. Micro…

Layered nitrogen (N) fertilization has been proposed to improve wheat productivity, yet its rhizosphere mechanisms remain unclear. In a four-year field experiment, we compared layered fertilization (N1-2-1), surface application (N8), and no N input (NCK). Layered fertilization increased grain yield, anthesis-stage N accumulation, root biomass, and soil nutrient availability relative to N8. It also reshaped rhizosphere microbiomes and metabolomes, reducing overall microbial richness but enriching a Flavobacterium-enriched bacterial module. Network and correlation analyses linked this module wit…

Soil rhizosphere microorganisms play crucial roles in the regulation of plant growth and disease resistance. This study aimed to construct stable growth-promoting and anthracnose-suppressive synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) using beneficial microbes isolated from the strawberry rhizosphere. Reanalysis of published high-throughput sequencing data confirmed that the core rhizosphere microbial communities of strawberry across different substrates were dominated by phyla such as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, and genera Pseudomonas and Streptomyces (typical plant growt…

Cadmium (Cd) contamination severely threatens peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production and symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF). Although rhizobia inoculation can alleviate heavy metal toxicity in plants, how nitrate (NO3-) regulates Cd translocation and the defense of the "rhizobia-root-nodule" system remains unclear. Here, we investigated the mechanisms by which the peanut rhizobium, Rhizobium sp. HM13, mitigates Cd toxicity and sustains SNF under varying NO3- levels (N- and N+) via field and pot trials. Field trials showed that HM13 reduced rhizosphere bioavailable Cd and decreased seed Cd accu…

Classical plant immunity models rely on pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), yet these frameworks largely overlook the rhizosphere microbiome as a functional determinant of disease resistance. Plants act as holobionts, their root exudates comprising flavonoids, coumarins, benzoxazinoids, strigolactones, and primary metabolites selectively recruit microbial communities whose composition is shaped by host genotype and dynamically reprogrammed under biotic and abiotic stress. Recruited microorganisms return a diverse signal range including flagellin, siderophore…

Biochar, a soil amendment with diverse regulatory functions, has been widely applied to enhance soil conditions. However, its underlying mechanism for alleviating continuous cropping obstacles, from the perspective of rhizosphere microbe-metabolite-plant coupling, remains to be further elucidated. Using cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) as the model crop, this study explored the rhizosphere-mediated effects of biochar application under continuous cropping conditions via the analytical methods of metagenomics and metabolomics. Six biochar application rates (0, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha-¹) were tes…

Tea quality is largely determined by the accumulation of specialized metabolites in fresh leaves, yet the effects of the propagation method on tea quality and its belowground ecological basis remain insufficiently understood. In this study, sexually propagated (SR) and asexually propagated (AR) tea plants were compared by integrating soil physicochemical analysis, leaf quality and physiological measurements, widely targeted metabolomics, and rhizosphere metagenomic profiling. Compared with AR, SR plants exhibited more favorable rhizosphere nutrient conditions, with soil organic matter, total n…

Non-Basmati aromatic rice varieties of Indian landrace are preferred for their distinctive aroma and superior grain quality, yet they generally exhibit lower yield potential. Rhizosphere microbial activities play a crucial role in plant performance under organic nutrient management. A 3-year field experiment was conducted in Indo-Gangetic alluvial soil to evaluate whether microbial ecological diversity or functional attributes exert a stronger impact on the yield and aroma of six indigenous non-basmati aromatic rice varieties, along with one non-aromatic check. A total of 140 bacterial culture…

INTRODUCTION: Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliataL. Raf) and "Ziyang Xiangcheng" (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka) are the predominant rootstocks for lemon production in China, exhibiting distinct adaptations to soil pH and differential impacts on plant resilience. As pivotal mediators of scion-soil interactions, rootstocks have emerged as key research targets for their regulatory potential in rhizosphere microbial communities and metabolites.
METHODS: Pot-cultured systems were established with lemon (Citrus × limon "Eureka") saplings grafted onto trifoliate orange (PTL) and "Ziyang Xiangchen…

This study investigated the impact of rhizosphere fungi on the quality of Atractylodes macrocephala in China by analyzing the physical and chemical properties, enzyme activities, and community structures of soil samples from four distinct regions: Pan'an (PA), Bozhou (BZ), Zhoukou (ZK), and Anguo (AG). The results indicated that both biomass and active components of A. macrocephala were significantly higher in authentic production areas compared to emerging ones. The rhizosphere soil network in PA, identified as an authentic production area, exhibited the most complex structure, with pH levels…

Plant genetic variation affects root phenotype and exudate composition, making it a pivotal factor in host-specific rhizosphere effects. Here we compare the rhizosphere microbiome of banana (Musa spp.) diploid cultivars (AA and BB), triploid cultivars derived from genome hybridizations into autotriploid cultivars (AAA), and various allotriploid cultivars (AAB and ABB) grown under field conditions to assess the influence of genome and subgenome type on the rhizosphere microbial community. Our study revealed that rhizosphere microbiomes of banana plants are significantly affected by banana genom…

Clonal plants enhance their fitness in heterogeneous environments through clonal integration, which enables resource sharing among interconnected ramets. However, how clonal integration shapes rhizosphere microbiome assembly and function remains poorly understood. In this study, we constructed patchy heterogeneous soils with cadmium-polluted and unpolluted substrates to simulate fragmented polluted habitats. Apical ramets were grown in cadmium-polluted soil and basal positions were cultivated in unpolluted soil, with stolons left either intact or severed. Rhizosphere and root-zone soils were s…

A soil-column experiment was conducted to compare biochar (BC) and nanobiochar (NB) at 2.5, 5, and 10% (w/w) to investigate their potential for stabilizing cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) under bare-soil and maize-planted conditions, enabling separation of amendment effects from rhizosphere-mediated influences. Soil properties, metal leaching behavior, microbial biomass nitrogen, plant growth, tissue metal accumulation, and phytostabilization indices were assessed. In contaminated unamended soil, soil organic matter, cation exchange capacity, and microbial biomass nitrogen declined, with substantia…

BACKGROUND: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer a sustainable alternative for managing soilborne diseases, yet their field efficacy is often compromised by poor rhizosphere persistence. Here, we tracked the spatiotemporal colonization dynamics of a GFP-labeled Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B1408 strain and developed a wheat straw biochar-based formulation to overcome this bottleneck.
RESULTS: At 120 days post-inoculation, the biochar formulation increased B1408 populations from 7.49 × 103 to 4.96 × 104 CFU g-1 in the rhizosphere soil and from 1.41 × 104 to 7.58 × 104 CFU g-1 on the…

Cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a serious problem in wheat fields. Although wheat is predominantly cultivated in neutral-alkaline soils, where Cd bioavailability is conventionally considered low, soil colloids constitute a dynamic Cd reservoir capable of releasing Cd2+ for wheat adsorption. Argosol colloids (North China Plain) caused 1.6-fold higher Cd bioaccumulation in wheat than Aridosol colloids (Loess Plateau), despite having 2.1-fold less colloidal Cd and similar pH (∼9.0). Analysis revealed mineral-organic colloids >50 nm enhance Cd bioavailability via two pathways: disaggregation-rele

Studies have demonstrated that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can alter the rhizosphere microbial communities during exposure to tetracycline, thereby alleviating the adverse effects of antibiotics. We hypothesized that Funneliformis mosseae (F. mosseae) reshapes soil metabolite composition and associated-microbial pathways under tetracycline stress and that these metabolite changes are associated with the rhizosphere microbial communities. To test this hypothesis, microbiological profiling with metabolomics approaches were carried out to investigate how AMF reshape rhizosphere metabolite …
