Interosseous ganglion cyst of the ribs with unusual presentation of hemoptysis.

An interosseous ganglion cyst is a very rare entity, found mostly in skeletally mature patients, particularly in long bones such as the tibia and femur. However, we are the first to report here an unusual case of interosseous ganglion cyst of the upper ribs in a young female patient, which she had an unpredicted presentation of cough and hemoptysis and a large painful lump over the anterior left upper chest. The radiological and pathological workup confirmed the presence of a benign interosseous ganglion cyst arising from the left first rib, invading the second rib and the apex of the left lun…

Transaxillary decompression of thoracic outlet syndrome patients presenting with cervical ribs.

OBJECTIVE: The transaxillary approach to thoracic outlet decompression in the presence of cervical ribs offers the advantage of less manipulation of the brachial plexus and associated nerves. This may result in reduced incidence of perioperative complications, such as nerve injuries. Our objective was to report contemporary data for a series of patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and cervical ribs managed through a transaxillary approach. METHODS: We reviewed a prospectively maintained database for all consecutive patients who underwent surgery for TOS and who had a cervical rib. Sym…

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome from Bilateral Cervical Ribs -A Clinical Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical rib is a mesenchymal or cartilaginous elongation of the transverse process of usually the seventh, rarely the sixth, … nterossei muscle power was 4/5 (MRC grading).X-rays of the cervical spine showed bilateral cervical ribs which were longer on the right than on the left. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine showed short segment cervical cord syrinx formation at C2/C3 level and bilateral cervical rib with brachial plexus compression on the right side. Right …

[Therapy of the unstable thorax in serial fractures of the ribs].

The histories of patients with flail chest and respiratory insufficiency caused by blunt chest injury have been analyzed. The first group represented patients with surgical stabilization of 3-4 ribs by introduction of "Rehbein plates" into the medullary cavity (10 patients 1972-1975). The patients of the second group have been supported by controlled mechanical respiration (11 patients 1972-1975). Patients with chest and further injuries (polyblessés) of comparable degree have been selected for both groups. The two groups were compared with regard to duration of intubation and artificial venti…

Giant-cell tumors and aneurysmal bone cysts of ribs in childhood.

Cystic or solid lesions of ribs containing giant cells are rarely seen in children. Three cases are presented which are uncommon with regard to the age of the patients (5-14 yr old) as well as the site. These lesions were diagnosed late and exclusively by X-ray. Radiographically it was impossible to distinguish between a giant cell tumor and an aneurysmal bone cyst. Although the distinction of aneurysmal bone cysts and giant cell tumors sensu strictiori is justified from a clinical point of view, the two may be variants of the same pathologic growth process, i.e. growth of angiogribous tissue …

Surgical Stabilization of Rib Fractures: Current Evidence and Considerations for Posterior Rib Fractures.

PURPOSE: Posterior rib fractures represent severe thoracic trauma and are associated with a higher risk of complications due to their proximity to vital intrathoracic structures, including the intercostal vessels and lungs. Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) has emerged as an operative strategy to restore chest wall stability, improve respiratory mechanics, and reduce pain. However, evidence specifically addressing posterior rib fractures remains limited, and current understanding is largely extrapolated from studies involving general rib fracture populations. METHODS: This litera

Surgical Rib Fixation is Associated With Lower Mortality in Patients With Traumatic Rib Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Nonoperative management (NOM) along with supportive care has been the adopted approach for traumatic rib fractures; however, surgical approaches have emerged recently to treat this common pathology. Despite this, there are no guidelines for surgical rib fixation in patients with traumatic rib fractures. METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective cohort study was performed at the Puerto Rico Trauma Hospital aiming to compare the outcomes and complications between patients with traumatic rib fractures who undergo surgical fixation and their counterparts with NOM

Rib Plating as an Effective Approach to Managing Traumatic Rib Injuries: A Review of the Literature.

Timely repair is essential to maximizing outcomes in patients with traumatic rib injuries, whether in the presence or absence of flail chest (FC) or existing as single or multiple rib fractures (MRF), due to its high morbidity and mortality rate. This review focuses primarily on the plating system as an effective surgical approach to stabilizing these injuries. Literature was surveyed using the Google Scholar, PLOS One, and PubMed search engines between August 2021 and April 2022. A total of 34 articles were included herein, and primary and secondary outcomes were assessed. The primary outcome

Protocol for extracting and isolating porcine bone-marrow-derived macrophages from ribs.

Due to anatomical and biological similarities with humans, pigs are increasingly used for inflammation- and immune-related studies in biomedical research, including the field of osteonecrosis and osteoimmunology. Here, we present a protocol for rib extraction, isolation of the bone marrow by centrifugation, and processing to obtain bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). Then, we describe the procedures of in vitro experiments to evaluate the cell phenotype. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Andre et al.1.

The prevalence of 11 ribs and its potential implications in spine surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Wrong level surgery is a preventable event in spine surgery. The thoracic spine given its length and anatomical landmarks remains the most challenging spine section for accurate localization during surgery. Traditionally, counting the ribs with intraoperative fluoroscopy is the preferred method. The incidence of 11 ribs instead of the conventional 12 ribs is not examined in current scientific literature, even though the incidence of 11 ribs may have a substantial impact on spinal procedures and the outcomes. This is especially relevant if patients have a potential surgical pathol…

Thirteen ribs and long gap oesophageal atresia: The embryological hypothesis for exploration.

CONTEXT: Since the gap between two atretic segments of oesophagus is a critical determinant of prognosis for oesophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF), the search for a surrogate non-invasive pre-operative marker of long gap atresia continues. AIMS: The purpose of the study was to compare the presence of normal and supernumerary ribs with length of EA and survival rates. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care referral neonatal intensive care unit in North Karnataka, India, from January 2016 to June 2019. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Amo…

Association between ribs shape and pulmonary function in patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that ribs shape changes in patients with OI are more relevant for respiratory function than thoracic spine shape. We used 3D geometric morphometrics to quantify rib cage morphology in OI patients and controls, and to investigate its relationship with forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), expressed as absolute value and as percentage of predicted value (% pred). Regression analyses on the full sample showed a significant relation between rib shape and FEV1, FVC and FVC % pred whereas thoracic spine shape w…

Osteomyelitis of the ribs in children: a rare and potentially challenging diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Rib osteomyelitis is rare in children and can mimic other pathologies. Imaging has a major role in the diagnosing rib osteomyelitis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical presentation and imaging findings in children with rib osteomyelitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective (2009-2018) study on children with rib osteomyelitis verified by either positive culture or pathology. We excluded children with multifocal osteomyelitis or empyema necessitans. We reviewed medical charts for clinical, laboratory and pathology data, and treatment. All imaging modalities for rib abn
