Ring chromosome 14 syndrome presenting with intractable epilepsy: a case report.

Ring chromosome 14 syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. Typically, children with this syndrome have distinct facial features, development delay, microcephaly, seizures, ocular abnormalities, and recurrent respiratory infections. Epilepsy associated with ring chromosome 14 generally shows intractable seizures. We describe a six-month-old girl with ring chromosome 14 syndrome who presented with early-onset and drug-resistant seizures.

Ring chromosome 22: a review of the literature and first report from India.

Ring chromosome 22 [r(22)], a rare cytogenetic finding, has been described in nearly 70 cases to date. Cytogenetic investigations were carried out on a 5-year-old male child with microcephaly and intellectual disability. Cytogenetic investigations revealed his karyotype to be 46,XY,r(22). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an r(22) anomaly from India.

New association between ring chromosome 20 syndrome and hypomelanosis of Ito.

Hypomelanosis of Ito is an uncommon neuroectodermal disease associated with a wide range of cytogenetic abnormalities. Ring chromosome 20 is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by severe, refractory epilepsy, cognitive delay, and unspecific dysmorphic traits. An association between the hypomelanosis of Ito and ring chromosome 20 syndrome was never reported peviously. We describe a young girl who has ring chromosome 20 and who also has clinical symptoms of hypomelanosis of Ito. After her diagnosis of epilepsy, she was submitted to neurologic and genetic testing, a skin biopsy, and repeate

Cutis tricolor parvimaculata in two patients with ring chromosome 15 syndrome.

Two unrelated girls presented with multiple disseminated, paired, small café-au-lait spots and hypopigmented macules, suggesting didymosis (twin spotting). The girls also had growth retardation, microcephaly, hypertelorism, triangular facies, and a 46,XY, r(15) karyotype. The term cutis tricolor parvimaculata has been proposed to describe a twin spot phenomenon characterized by small, paired hypochromic and hyperchromic macules on a background of normal intermediate-pigmented skin. It has been hypothesized that the underlying gene locus of this phenomenon is a hot spot for postzygotic recombin

Ring 14 chromosome presenting as early-onset isolated partial epilepsy.

We report four infants (two males, two females) with ring 14 chromosome presenting with early-onset partial epilepsy. The first seizure occurred between 3 and 6 months (3, 3, 4, and 6mo respectively). In all four cases, diagnosis was based on early focal seizures, rather than on psychomotor retardation or morphological features, which were not prominent at seizure onset. Moreover, despite the young age of the patients and the high frequency of seizures, neither epileptic spasms nor progression to 'epileptic encephalopathy', such as hypsarrhythmia, were observed. Epilepsy remained partial in th

Refractory and lethal status epilepticus in a patient with ring chromosome 20 syndrome.

PURPOSE: The only consistent symptom of ring chromosome 20 syndrome (r(20)) is severe, refractory epilepsy often associated with a characteristic, although not pathognomonic, EEG pattern. Patients suffer from severe seizures with accompanying cognitive decline and frequent episodes of non-convulsive status epilepticus (SE). Other features of this rare disorder, such as dysmorphic changes, mental retardation and behavioral disturbances are variable. Because of the variability of the clinical presentation, some patients with r(20) undergo invasive investigations before being diagnosed. CASE STU

An epileptic case with mosaic ring chromosome 6 and 6q terminal deletion.

Ring chromosomes are rare chromosome disorders that arise usually de novo. Children with ring chromosome 6 have a wide range of intellectual functioning and congenital anomalies. We report an epileptic case of a 10-year-old boy to be mild psychomotor retardation and dysmorphic traits including microcephaly, brachycephaly, flat occiput, large and apparently low set ears, and bilateral syndactyly between his second and third fingers with mosaic ring chromosome 6 and 6q terminal deletion. Peripheral chromosome and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) analysis of the patient showed mos46,XY,r(…

An unexpected finding in a child with neurological problems: mosaic ring chromosome 18.

Major neurological disorders may accompany rare chromosomal abnormalities. As an example of this rare condition, we present a case with microcephaly, mental retardation, developmental delay, hyperactivity, stereotypic movements, seizures and dysmorphic facial appearance in whom a mosaic ring chromosome 18 was found [45,XX,-18/46,XX,r(18)/46,XX,dicr(18)]. Although ring chromosome 18 phenotype has been known for a long time, this is the third reported patient with a dicentric ring chromosome 18 mosaicism. The presented case will contribute to the identification of the genotype-phenotype correlat

Molecular cloning and analysis of breakpoints on ring chromosome 17 in a patient with autism.

The breakpoint junction on a ring chromosome 17 in a girl with autism, mental retardation, mild dysmorphism and neurofibromatosis was identified and analysed at the nucleotide level. The extent of the deleted segments was about 1.9 Mb on 17p and about 1.0 Mb on 17q. The structure of the junction between the 17p and 17q arms, especially the lack of significant homology between the juxtaposed genomic regions and the presence of short microhomology at the junction site, indicated non-homologous end joining as the most likely mechanism leading to the rearrangement. In addition to the 17p-17q junct

[Growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism and ring chromosome 18: case report].

INTRODUCTION: The association of 18-ring chromosome syndrome and growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is extremely rare, with only two reports in the literature. CASE REPORT: A one year-old, non-white female was referred due to hypoglycemic seizures. She had developmental delay and poor nutrition. Her physical examination was significant for a weight Z score of -6.95, height Z score of -5,05, cleft palate, epicanthic folds and generalized hypotony. Karyotype was 46XX r(18) (p11,2- q.23)--18 ring chromosome syndrome, the MRI showed an ectopic neurohypophysis. The diagnosis GHD was made due to low G

Molecular analysis of a ring chromosome X in a family with fragile X syndrome.

The phenotypically normal sister of a patient affected by fragile X syndrome was referred for genetic counselling and was found to carry a mosaic karyotype 46,X,r(X)/45,X. Because the probability of the simultaneous chance occurrence of fragile X syndrome and a ring chromosome X in the same family is very low, we postulated that the breakpoint of the ring chromosome X originated in the cytogenetic break in Xq27.3 responsible for fragile X syndrome. In order to determine the relative positions of the breakpoint on the ring chromosome X and the (CGG)n unstable sequence responsible for the fragil

Aniridia, congenital glaucoma, and hydrocephalus in a male infant with ring chromosome 6.

A premature infant with unilateral aniridia and congenital ectropion uveae, contralateral Rieger anomaly, bilateral congenital glaucoma, and hydrocephalus was found to have ring chromosome 6. The findings are consistent with multiple manifestations of a neural crest-derived maldevelopment of the anterior segment and central nervous system. Comparison with the 14 previously reported cases of ring chromosome 6 illustrates the phenotypic variability of this syndrome.

Ring chromosome 15 in a male adult with radial defects. Evaluation of the phenotype.

A case of a 37-year-old male patient with r(15) is reported. At birth he was small and light for dates. His main features are: short stature, head circumference in the lower normal range, mid-facial hypoplasia, radial defects, and mental retardation. Evaluation of the phenotype led us to conclude that a wide spectrum of malformations is possible. There is apparently no strong correlation between karyotype and phenotype.

CGH and direct diagnosis of mosaic structural chromosomal abnormalities: description of a mosaic ring chromosome 17 and review of the literature.

We report the characterisation of a de novo supernumerary chromosome marker in a mosaic state (50%) by comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) in an 8-year-old child with hypotonia, dysmorphia and mild-to-moderate mental retardation. We describe the combined use of CGH and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) to identify the origin of the additional chromosomal material. Visual analysis of 10 CGH-metaphase spreads revealed a gain of green fluorescent signal on pericentromeric region of chromosome 17. The CGH finding was confirmed by FISH analysis using a whole chromosome 17 paint, a chrom
