OBJECTIVE: To determine whether various solutions commonly used in amnioinfusion during labor affect neonatal electrolyte and blood gas values.

Eight drugs that stimulate the isolated hypodynamic frog heart have been tested for their ability to stimulate hearts freshly perfused in calcium-free Ringer solution. Ouabain and digitoxigenin regularly caused stimulation, veratridine did so occasionally. The hemodynamic and pulmonary effects of fluid resuscitation with crystalloid and colloid solutions in the presence of mild pulmonary edema were investigated. Anesthetized dogs received oleic acid to increase pulmonary capillary permeability, and one hour later bled to produce hemorrhagic shock. One hour after the shock, resuscitation was performed with Ringer's lactate, 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solution, or dog's plasma. The leptomeninges of cats were exposed to lidocaine, metrizamide and methiodal sodium and compared with control brains exposed to Ringer's solution. METHODS: Ten male volunteers with a mean age of 22 years underwent three infusion experiments, on separate days and in random order.
