Sick of debt: How over-indebtedness is hampering health in rural Cambodia.

This paper evidences how many rural poor Cambodians are sick of debt. Based on original, mixed-method data (2020-2022), exploring credit provisioning in this context, the aim of this paper is to illuminate some of the conditions leading to rural Cambodians taking on debt to bolster their health, and the effects this is having on borrowers' physical, psychological, emotional and social health. Specifically, we show how the health of our participants is constrained by a range of major illnesses that many suffer from and their poor food conditions, both exacerbated by the effects of climate chang

Mental health professionals and telehealth in a rural setting: a cross sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth usage has been promoted in all settings but has been identified as a panacea to issues of access and equity in the rural context. However, uptake and widespread integration of telehealth across all parts of the health system has been slow, with a myriad of barriers documented, including in rural settings. The crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw barriers rapidly overturned with the unprecedented and exponential rise in telehealth usage. The uniqueness of the crisis forced telehealth adoption, but as the urgency stabilises, pandemic learnings must be captured, utilised, a

Understanding Pediatric Mental Health in Primary Care: Needs in a Rural State.

The need for mental health care for pediatric patients outstrips the supply, especially in states, like Kansas, that experience shortages of mental health professionals. Pediatric mental health care access programs, like KSKidsMAP (Kansas Kids Mental health Access Program), increase access to care by building competence and confidence in primary care physicians and clinicians (PCPs) through a statewide integrated system that includes a consultation line. This study is a secondary analysis of KSKidsMAP consultation Line inquiries regarding patients aged 0 to 21 years with mental and behavioral

Rural-urban health disparities for mood disorders and obesity in a midwestern community.

INTRODUCTION: Prior studies indicate greater disease burden for obesity among rural compared with urban residents but no differences for mood disorder based on geographic location. Recent attention has focused on the need to examine regional rural-urban disparities in disease burden. We focused on mood disorders and obesity prevalence within three southeastern Minnesota counties served by the Mayo Clinic Center for Translational Science Award, in Rochester, Minnesota, as these were top priorities identified in community health needs assessments. METHODS: Cross-sectional study to assess the as

HIV Testing and Treatment with the Use of a Community Health Approach in Rural Africa.

BACKGROUND: Universal antiretroviral therapy (ART) with annual population testing and a multidisease, patient-centered strategy could reduce new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and improve community health. METHODS: We randomly assigned 32 rural communities in Uganda and Kenya to baseline HIV and multidisease testing and national guideline-restricted ART (control group) or to baseline testing plus annual testing, eligibility for universal ART, and patient-centered care (intervention group). The primary end point was the cumulative incidence of HIV infection at 3 years. Secondary

Weight management in rural health clinics: The Midwest diet and exercise trial.

UNLABELLED: Obesity prevalence is higher in rural compared to urban residents. Rural health clinics offer a potential venue for delivery of weight management. However, traditional programs require travel to attend on-site meetings which is impractical or inconvenient for rural residents. Clinic staff in most rural settings are unlikely to be trained to provide effective weight management. Remote delivery using group phone conferences (GP) or individual phone calls (IP), by staff associated with rural clinics eliminates the need for travel to attend on-site meetings. The effectiveness of these …

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including emotional abuse, substance abuse in the household, separation or divorce, physical abuse, violence between adults, mental illness in the household, sexual abuse, or incarceration of a household member, have the potential to profoundly impact health and well-being in adulthood. To assess whether previously reported relationships between ACEs and health outcomes withstand validation, we conducted a community-based ACE study with the unique capacity to link self-reported ACEs and other survey results to validated health data in an electr

The oral health of children in a rural area of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The lack of information on oral health in Laos makes it difficult to estimate the need and methods for preventing oral disease. This study identified problems concerning the oral health of Lao children. The study subjects were 59 school children who lived in Pakkading District. Dental caries, gingivitis malocclusions, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, dental plaque, and calculus were examined. We observed an average of 1.6 decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) and 4.1 decayed and filled deciduous teeth (dft) per child. 25.4% had gingivitis scores from 16 to 20 on the papillary, marg

Women's health in rural Uganda: problems, coping strategies, and recommendations for change.

This study draws upon 63 semi-structured interviews with rural women in central Uganda to elicit women's health problems, coping mechanisms, and recommendations for improved health services. The health problems most commonly reported by the women were sexually transmitted diseases, especially syphilis, abdominal pain, genital sores, and mental stress. Women indicated several barriers to obtaining health care, such as inaccessibility to health-care facilities, lack of time and money, and dependence on men for permission to leave the home. In response, they had devised several coping strategies

Public health impact of establishing the cause of bacterial infections in rural Asia.

Recent studies delineating bacterial causes of fever in rural Asia indicate a major role for several previously under-recognized pathogens, including Rickettsia and Leptospira. The use of blood culture for the first time to investigate patients with febrile illness in rural Asia has also revealed some unexpected findings, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus is the major cause of bacteraemia in children aged <1 year in Laos. The spread of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens such as MRSA into rural Asia has already occurred and requires monitoring. These factors have major implications for empirical therap
