Myeloid Sarcoma with Megakaryoblastic Differentiation Arising in the Conjunctiva.

An 87-year-old woman not known to have either a lymphoma or leukemia developed a left multinodular, fish-flesh superior epibulbar and forniceal mass. A biopsy disclosed a blastic tumor with scattered multinucleated immature megakaryoblasts. Immunophenotyping of bone marrow cells revealed strong positivity for CD7, CD31, CD43, CD45, CD61, and CD117; CD71, myeloperoxidase, and lysozyme were also positive in scattered cells. Forty percent of the neoplastic cells were Ki-67 positive. Cytogenetic studies indicated a trisomy 8 (associated with worse prognosis) and a t(12; 17) translocation. Desmin,

Cytopathology of myeloid sarcoma: a study of 16 cases.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma (MS) in cytology samples is challenging, especially when these tumors occur prior to a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. The aim of this study was to review our cytopathology service's experience with a series of MS cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Archival records were searched from which 16 cytology cases of MS were identified and reviewed. Clinical findings, cytomorphology, and ancillary studies were analyzed. RESULTS: MS was secondary to acute myeloid leukemia in 14 cases, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in blast crisis in 1 case, and myelody

Myeloid sarcoma of the nasopharynx mimicking an aggressive lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extra-medullary tumour of the myeloid lineage, which can be a difficult diagnosis to make. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 73-year-old male with a right-sided nasopharyngeal mass revealed on CT scan and MRI. RESULTS: An initial cytological and histological examination suggested a high-grade lymphoma. Nevertheless, the final diagnosis was a MS with an unusual involvement of the nasopharynx that was treated with a conventional induction leukemia therapy. Eight months later, the patient had persistent thrombocytopenia and a bone marrow aspir

Myeloid sarcoma of the vagina: a report of 2 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe 2 cases of myeloid sarcoma of the vagina, in a patient without a history of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and in another whose condition was previously diagnosed with AML. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical histories of 2 patients whose conditions were diagnosed with myeloid sarcoma of the vagina were obtained from their medical records. RESULTS: Case 1: A 77-year-old woman with no systemic illnesses presented with a vaginal lump. Clinically, there was a 6-cm periurethral mass that was examined by biopsy. The histopathologic specimen was evaluated on routine and immuno

Myeloid sarcomas: a histologic, immunohistochemical, and cytogenetic study.

CONTEXT: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a neoplasm of immature granulocytes, monocytes, or both involving any extramedullary site. The correct diagnosis of MS is important for adequate therapy, which is often delayed because of a high misdiagnosis rate. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the lineage differentiation of neoplastic cells in MS by immunohistochemistry, and to correlate the results with clinicopathologic findings and cytogenetic studies. DESIGN: Histologic and immunohistochemical examinations were performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 13 cases of MS. They were classified

Myeloid Sarcoma Involving the Testis in Adults: Clonal Evolution of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

To describe the clinical, histologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic characteristics of myeloid sarcoma (MS) diagnosed in the testes of adults, 3 cases were identified, and information on their presentation, clinical features, treatment, and outcome was retrieved from the medical records. In addition, histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular characteristics were reviewed. This showed that all patients had a previous history of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), in 2 cases diagnosed >10 years before the testicular lesions. In 1 case, there was bilateral involvement, while in 2, involvement was uni

Isolated myeloid sarcoma of the tibia: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of malignant myeloid cells that most commonly arise in patients previously diagnosed with myeloproliferative disease. However, they can still occur in isolation and without bone marrow disease. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old girl who had a history of acute myeloid leukemia and was off treatment for four years presented to the clinic with a history of on and off left knee swelling and pain without any direct trauma to the knee over the last two years. Knee Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed diffused joint effusio

Myeloid sarcoma of the thoracic spine: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm that typically arises at extramedullary sites and is associated with a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. While myeloid sarcoma can involve any organ, central nervous system involvement is rare, particularly in the adult population. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 87-year-old female presented with progressive paraparesis of 5 days' duration. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an epidural tumor from T4 to T7 with cord compression. When she underwent a laminectomy for tumor resection, the pathology revealed a myeloid sarcoma with m

Testicular Myeloid Sarcoma: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Myeloid sarcoma usually involves lymph nodes, and head and neck regions. Uncommon sites like testis and ovary are rarely involved and pose a diagnostic challenge. Nonspecific findings, difficulty in retrieving biopsy specimens, and associated infertility are few of the hurdles faced during diagnosis and treatment of testicular myeloid sarcoma. Our review is an attempt to study myeloid sarcoma involving testis.

[Two cases of myeloid sarcomas with review of literature].

INTRODUCTION: Myeloid sarcomas are uncommon proliferations of immature myeloid cells occurring in any extramedullary organ. We report here two cases of myeloid sarcomas in patients with, respectively, a polycythemia vera and a myelodysplastic syndrome. CASE REPORTS: The first is an 81-year-old woman who presented with osteolytic lesions. Diagnosis has been highlighted using anatomopathological study after bone marrow biopsy, but it was delayed because of a very localized basin lesion and few positive myeloid markers. The second patient is an 86-year-old man who presented with pancytopenia and

Ultrasound Findings in a Case of Myeloid Sarcoma of the Breast.

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare, solid extramedullary tumor originating from immature granulocytic cells or monocytes. Breast involvement without an aleukemic or myeloproliferative disorder is very infrequent. A 21-year-old female patient was admitted with bilateral palpable breast masses for four months. The patient had given birth approximately one year ago. The ultrasonographic examination revealed multiple, oval shaped-some of them with microlubulated margins-hypoechoic, solid masses of which, the largest mass measured 4.5 × 2.5 cm, evaluated as BI-RADS 4. The histopthological examination sugges

Myeloid sarcomas: a clinicopathologic study of 20 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Myeloid sarcoma is a tumoral mass of mature or immature myeloid blasts in extramedullary anatomic locations. It can be seen de novo or in association with acute myeloid leukemia, myeloproliferative neoplasias, or myelodysplastic syndrome. Isolated myeloid sarcoma can be seen as a relapse in cases with allogenic bone marrow transplantation. Although it may involve any tissue in the body, the most common locations are skin, soft tissues, lymph nodes, and the gastrointestinal tract. Immunohistochemically, most cases show myelomonocytic or pure monoblastic differentiation. We reviewed t
