SARcopenia Assessment in Hypertension: The SARAH Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and renin-angiotensin system-related disorders and to explore the effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers on muscle mass/function and physical performance. DESIGN: This multicenter, cross-sectional study was performed using ISarcoPRM algorithm for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. RESULTS: Of the 2613 participants (mean age = 61.0 ± 9.5 yrs), 1775 (67.9%) were hypertensive. All sarcopenia-related parameters (except chair stand test in males) were worse in hype…

Mouse models of sarcopenia: classification and evaluation.

Sarcopenia is a progressive and widespread skeletal muscle disease that is related to an increased possibility of adverse consequences such as falls, fractures, physical disabilities and death, and its risk increases with age. With the deepening of the understanding of sarcopenia, the disease has become a major clinical disease of the elderly and a key challenge of healthy ageing. However, the exact molecular mechanism of this disease is still unclear, and the selection of treatment strategies and the evaluation of its effect are not the same. Most importantly, the early symptoms of this disea…

[Sarcopenia: a geriatric syndrome that impacts urology].

With increasing age, people lose muscle strength and muscle mass. Acute illnesses, surgical interventions or chronic illnesses can quickly lead to immobility and even more muscle loss. For the elderly, there is a risk of reduced functionality and everyday skills. This syndrome, referred to sarcopenia, is characterized by a progressive and generalized loss of muscle mass and strength with negative consequences such as functional impairment and frailty. In the case of serious illnesses or surgical interventions, this is particularly noticeable in prolonged convalescence. Sarcopenia is associated…

Impact of Sarcopenia on Degenerative Lumbar Spondylosis.

Sarcopenia is characterized by progressive age-related and systematic loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. It was classified as an independent disease in 2016; thus, there is a sparsity of research on the association of sarcopenia with lower back pain and spinal diseases. Its prevalence is around 10% worldwide and it has been shown to be detrimental to quality of life in the elderly. Sarcopenia can be clinically identified by assessing muscle mass and physical performance measurements to show reduced strength (eg, grip strength chair rise and knee extensions) or function (eg, …

[Cachexia and Sarcopenia Associated with Lung Cancer].

Lung cancer is the most common cause of death in all kinds of cancers in Japan, and the number of it increased year and year in these 50 years. Since the 5-year survival rate of advanced lung cancer is only 6.4%, it is one of the poorest prognosis cancers. Almost 70% of patients with advanced lung cancer is suggested to be in precachexia/cachexia stage at their diagnosis. Cancer cachexia is one of the major reasons of refractory to chemotherapy and cancer death, however there is no effective treatment developed. Because cancer cachexia is multifactorial syndrome, multimodal treatment is needed

Role of exercise in age-related sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is an age-associated decline of skeletal muscle mass and function and is known to lead to frailty, cachexia, osteoporosis, metabolic syndromes, and death. Notwithstanding the increasing incidence of sarcopenia, the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving age-related sarcopenia are not completely understood. This article reviews current definitions of sarcopenia, its potential mechanisms, and effects of exercise on sarcopenia. The pathogenesis of age-related sarcopenia is multifactorial and includes myostatin, inflammatory cytokines, and mitochondria-derived problems. Especially, a…

Relationship of sarcopenia and body composition with osteoporosis.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and body composition and osteoporosis in cohorts of three different races with a total of 17,891 subjects. Lean mass and grip strength were positively associated with bone mineral densities (BMDs). Subjects with sarcopenia were two times more likely to have osteoporosis compared with normal subjects. INTRODUCTION: The relationship between sarcopenia and osteoporosis is not totally clear. First, the present study assessed this relationship by using two different definitions for sarcopenia. Second, we exa…

Identification and treatment of older persons with sarcopenia.

In the last decades, sarcopenia in older persons has been operationalized by the assessment of lean body mass, muscle strength and/or physical performance. Several definitions of sarcopenia, using different parameters and cut-offs, have been proposed. However, which is the best definition to describe and to assess this condition is still matter of debate. Hand grip strength has been suggested as better predictor of incident mobility impairment and mortality, than skeletal muscle mass. In the light of the current knowledge, we sought to propose an operative approach for identifying and treating…

Sarcopenia in women with vertebral fragility fractures.

We performed a pilot study with the purpose to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in osteoporotic women with vertebral fractures. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to measure the whole and regional body composition. Appendicular lean mass (aLM) was calculated as the sum of lean mass in arms and legs. We calculated the skeletal muscle mass index (aLM/h(2)), and we measured bone mineral density and T scores by DXA scan at total-body and at femoral neck. Participants were divided according to the number of vertebral fractures (single or multiple fractures). A total of 67 women we…

Sarcopenia with limited mobility: an international consensus.

A consensus conference convened by the Society of Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders has concluded that "Sarcopenia, ie, reduced muscle mass, with limited mobility" should be considered an important clinical entity and that most older persons should be screened for this condition. "Sarcopenia with limited mobility" is defined as a person with muscle loss whose walking speed is equal to or less than 1 m/s or who walks less than 400 m during a 6-minute walk, and who has a lean appendicular mass corrected for height squared of 2 standard deviations or more below the mean of healthy person…

The Role of Methylmalonic Acid in the Risk of Sarcopenia and All-Cause Mortality Among Individuals With Sarcopenia: Evidence From NHANES.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a driver of sarcopenia pathogenesis, progression, and prognosis. Muscle mass is a fundamental and objective component of sarcopenia. In some studies, relative muscle loss has been used to define sarcopenia. Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is a biomarker of mitochondrial dysfunction and vitamin B12 deficiency. Evidence has shown a negative link between MMA and muscle function, yet population-level evidence on its predictive and prognostic value in low muscle mass and sarcopenia remains scarce. This cohort study analyzes 10,414 U.S. adults from th…
