The spectral dependence of the optical properties of human sclera adjacent to the limbus was investigated and related to the potentials of transscleral photocoagulation. The total transmission, absorption and reflection and the angular distribution of the transmitted and reflected light were measured at five laser wavelengths (442 nm, 514 nm, 633 nm, 804 nm, and 1064 nm) for both noncontact and contact applications. The purpose of this study was to calculate the predictive value (PV) of blue sclera (BS) in iron deficiency in women. The presence of this clinical sign was evaluated in 498 female patients at an urban primary care centre. Three observers independently evaluated the existence of BS on a scale of 0 to 3 in all female patients visited over a period of 35 weeks. Homotransplantation of preserved sclera was successfully performed for post-traumatic scleral staphyloma in a 38-year-old woman with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VI. The transplanted tissue was preserved by glycerol dehydration. For 1 year postoperatively, no sign of graft failure or recurrence of scleral staphyloma has been found. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the use of a preserved scleral homograft to treat this ocular complication in a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
