Scorpion venom contains a cocktail of differing peptides and proteins. Previous studies focused on the identification of species-specific components in scorpion venoms, and whether there could be peptides and/or proteins conserved in the venom gland of a scorpion ancestor has been rarely investigated. Here, using a combination of transcriptomic and proteomic approaches, putative conserved toxins from the venom glands of scorpions Liocheles australasiae, Mesobuthus martensii, and Scorpio maurus palmatus were identified and compared. Similar to other studies, more than half of the conserved toxi…

The spread of multidrug-resistant human pathogens has drawn attention towards antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which are major players in the innate immune systems of many organisms, including vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and microbes. Scorpion venom is an abundant source of novel and potent AMPs. Here, we investigated natural and engineered AMPs from the scorpions Urodacus yaschenkoi and U. manicatus to determine their antimicrobial spectra as well as their hemolytic/cytotoxic activity. None of the AMPs were active against fungi, but many of them were active at low concentrations (0.25-30…

INTRODUCTION: Scorpion stings are a major health problem with potentially fatal consequences. Children under the age of 10 y especially face a great risk. Predicting the prognosis is important in reducing mortality and morbidity because it enables the use of early treatment options. In this study, we examine the relationship between proBNP and prognosis in scorpion stings.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of patients aged ≤18 y who were admitted to the child emergency service with a scorpion sting. We examined the demographical data, clinical findings, laboratory records, treatments,

Many venomous species, including snakes, bees and scorpions, contain a variety of secreted phospholipases A2 (sPLA2) that contribute to prey digestion and venom toxicity. Based on their primary structures, the different venom sPLA2 have been classified into four groups I, II, III and IX. While the structure of sPLA2 groups II and I has been well characterized, only one crystal structure of group III sPLA2 from bee venom was described. Scorpion venom sPLA2 belong to group III with a particular heterodimeric structure composed of a long enzymatic chain linked by a disulfide bridge to a Short one…

It is long known that peptide neurotoxins derived from a diversity of venomous animals evolve by positive selection following gene duplicati … y accumulated extensive sequence variations by relaxed purifying selection in prey and predators of scorpions. The evolutionary variability in the toxin-bound regions of sodium channels indicates that accelerated substitutions in the multigene family of scorpion toxins is a consequence of dealing with the target diversity. This work presents an example of a …

Scorpion venom is a water soluble, antigenic and heterogeneous mixture. The venom is composed of varying concentration of neurotoxin, cardiotoxin, nephrotoxin, haemolytic toxin, phosphodiesterase, phospholipases, hyaluronidases, glycosaminoglycans, histamine, serotonins, and tryptophan and cytokine releasers. The reported incidence of scorpion sting in India is 0.6 %. Scorpion sting resulting in acute renal failure has been reported in the past, but not the nephrotic syndrome. We report a patient of nephrotic syndrome after scorpion sting. The lacunae in the present knowledge linking scorpion

Children are susceptible to various injuries, including insect bites, and scorpion bites are common in the lower extremity of children in Middle East countries. In most cases, the sting will produce just a local reaction; however, serious complications that can result in death have occurred. In this case report, we describe a case of osteomyelitis of the calcaneum after a scorpion sting.

This epidemiological review was carried out to display the magnitude and the geographic distribution of scorpion envenomation in Iran with focus on the southwestern region of Iran, particularly. The Iranian recognized scorpions belonging to two families, including Buthidae and Scorpionidae. Buthidae family consists of 14 genuses, 26 species, and 18 sub-species, while Scorpionidae family has three genuses and four species. The lack of basic knowledge, including the geographical distribution, clinical manifestations, and specific treatments related to scorpiofauna justifies such multidisciplinar…

Scorpion stings are common in many tropical countries. Although most scorpion stings cause only localized pain without life-threatening envenoming, about one third of stings cause systemic envenoming which can result in death. Children are particularly sensitive to scorpion envenoming. The severity of scorpion stings is related to the presence of neurotoxins in the venom that cause a sudden release of neurotransmitters from the autonomic nervous system, predominantly sympathetic. There is also a strong inflammatory response that worsens symptoms, including those of a respiratory nature. Severa

Passive immunotherapy was discovered in 1894. It is the only etiological treatment of envenomations by snakes or scorpions. Immunotherapy is based on administration of antibodies produced by an animal hyperimmunised against venom. Improvement of whole antivenomous sera was obtained, first by separating the antibodies from other components of blood plasma, then by using enzyme digestion of immunoglobulins G and, finally, by purifying the final product. Efficacy and also tolerance were significantly increased. Antivenom administration should be performed through the intravascular route to ensure…

Snakebites and the scorpion stings constitute a neglected public health problem, first because their incidence is poorly known and, second, because low income populations are involved. Accidents of envenoming are still regarded as inevitable, leading to limitations of their management. A better knowledge of the incidence and severity of the envenoming should result in a better control. Antivenoms are well tolerated, due to high purification of immunoglobulin, and became the most effective treatment. But they remain inaccessible to the populations of underdeveloped countries because of its high

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of scorpion venom and antivenom in experimental envenomation.
DESIGN: Prospective, controlled animal study.
SETTING: University research laboratory
SUBJECTS: Twenty-nine anesthetized and ventilated dogs.
INTERVENTIONS: The first group of animals had venom alone (0.05 mg/kg). Animals from the second group had simultaneous administration of 10 ml of scorpion antivenom (SAV). In the third and fourth groups, 10 ml and 40 ml SAV, respectively, were injected 10 min following venom.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Hemodynamic parameters using right heart catheter wer

Scorpionism in Sub-Saharan Africa is a poorly known problem but regarded as a public health preoccupation in several countries, especially Niger. The lack of knowledge of this question is due to non-existent information concerning mainly the composition of the scorpion fauna in Sub-Saharan areas, the distribution and density of dangerous species and the frequency and severity of scorpion stings in the Sub-Saharan areas. Until now, only the presence of Leiurus quinquestriatus and its involvement in fatal accidents have been attested to. In many areas, the presence of other classically dangerous

Interpreting the lesions of victims of sexual violence is one of the most difficult and most controversial areas of forensic medicine. The case we report involves the care of a victim of sado-masochism. It identifies the difficulties of both the forensic and legal management of sexual violence in an unusual context.

Circular dichroism spectra were obtained for ten scorpion neurotoxins (representing five species of scorpion) in order to provide an understanding of their relative conformations in solution. Despite a high degree of amino acid sequence homology, the toxins clearly differ from each other in terms of CD-detectable structure. When superimposed, the CD spectra suggest that the toxins form a series of related conformational variants. Since the resemblances amongst the individual CD spectra can be correlated to degrees of sequence resemblance and pharmacological specificity, conformational balance
