Correlations between environmental salinity levels, blood biochemistry parameters, and steroid hormones in wild juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) inhabit freshwater wetlands that are vulnerable to salinization caused by anthropogenic alterations to freshwater flow, in addition to storm surges, sea level rise, and droughts. Salinization of coastal freshwater habitats is a growing concern in a changing climate due to increased frequency and intensity of storm surges and drought conditions. This study opportunistically sampled juvenile male and female wild alligators in various salinities each month excluding November, December, and January for one year at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in coas

Alpha0 thalassaemia as a result of a novel 11.1 kb deletion eliminating both of the duplicated alpha globin genes.

AIMS: To characterise a novel 11.1 kb deletion that eliminated both of the duplicated alpha globin genes, giving rise to a typical alpha0 thalassaemia phenotype in four carriers from a Chinese family. METHODS: Haematological investigations were carried out on all family members. The seven common forms of alpha thalassaemia were screened for by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blotting was used to analyse the alpha globin gene cluster. DNA sequence analysis of the entire alpha1 and alpha1 globin gene region was carried out and reverse transcription (RT)-PCR was used to investig

Coastlines retreat tipping point under storm climate changes.

Projected changes in ocean–atmosphere coupling under global warming suggest an intensification of storm climates, which, combined with sea-level rise, poses profound challenges to the resilience of sandy shorelines. Therefore, the definition of relevant indicators assessing beach response regimes to wave climate is crucial for future forecasts Here, we analyze 23 years of satellite-derived shoreline positions together with offshore wave data to quantify storm-induced erosion and post-storm recovery tendencies at synoptic scales. Our approach integrates statistically robust storm composites, co

Attributing climate-related health burdens in Southeast Asia: a scoping review.

Attributing health outcomes to climate-related exposures is essential for informing adaptive policy, yet Southeast Asia, one of the world's most climate-vulnerable regions, remains critically underrepresented in attribution research. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review of studies linking climate exposures to health burdens in the region. Although growing evidence demonstrates substantial health impacts from air pollution, heat, and extreme weather, the regional research landscape remains critically imbalanced, marked by neglect of other major hazards-including floods, droughts,

Decoupling speciation and extinction reveals both abiotic and biotic drivers shaped 250 million years of diversity in crocodile-line archosaurs.

Whereas living representatives of Pseudosuchia, crocodylians, number fewer than 30 species, more than 700 pseudosuchian species are known from their 250-million-year fossil record, displaying far greater ecomorphological diversity than their extant counterparts. With a new time-calibrated tree of >500 species, we use a phylogenetic framework to reveal that pseudosuchian evolutionary history and diversification dynamics were directly shaped by the interplay of abiotic and biotic processes over hundreds of millions of years, supported by information theory analyses. Speciation, but not extinctio

Water, sanitation and hygiene risk factors for the transmission of cholera in a changing climate: using a systematic review to develop a causal process diagram.

Cholera is a severe diarrhoeal disease affecting vulnerable communities. A long-term solution to cholera transmission is improved access to and uptake of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Climate change threatens WASH. A systematic review and meta-analysis determined five overarching WASH factors incorporating 17 specific WASH factors associated with cholera transmission, focussing upon community cases. Eight WASH factors showed lower odds and six showed higher odds for cholera transmission. These results were combined with findings in the climate change and WASH literature, to propose a h

Flux model to estimate the transport of mercury species in a contaminated lagoon (Ria de Aveiro, Portugal).

The concentrations of dissolved and particulate inorganic mercury (IHg(II)) and methylmercury (MeHg) from the contaminated Laranjo Bay (main freshwater discharge from the Antuã River) were measured by species-specific isotope dilution during six sampling campaigns at high and at low tide. Different effective riverine concentrations were calculated, based on salinity profiles, for specific hydrological conditions. The export fluxes of total Hg and MeHg (324 and 1.24 mol year-1, respectively) from the bay to the rest of the Aveiro Lagoon are much higher than the input fluxes from the Hg source (

Propranolol blocks metabolic rate increase but not ventilatory acclimatization to 4300 m.

Previously, we found resting metabolic rate increased at high altitude but the mechanism and consequences of this increase were unclear. We sought to test the role of beta-sympathetic activation for increasing metabolic rate and the contribution of an increase in metabolic rate to raising total ventilation at altitude. Following baseline studies at sea level, two groups of six healthy male subjects received either placebo or propranolol (80 mg/8 h) for 3 days prior to ascent to Pikes Peak (4300 m) where treatment was continued for 15 days. O2 consumption increased in placebo-treated subjects w

Time courses of cell electroporation as revealed by submicrosecond imaging of transmembrane potential.

Changes in the membrane conductance of sea urchin eggs, during the course of electroporation, were investigated over the time range of 0.5 microsecond to 1 ms by imaging the transmembrane potential at a submicrosecond resolution with the voltage-sensitive fluorescent dye RH292. When a rectangular electric pulse of moderate intensity was applied across an egg, a position-dependent potential developed synchronously with the pulse, as theory predicts for a cell with an insulating membrane. From the rise and fall times, the membrane capacitance of unfertilized eggs was estimated to be 0.95 microF/

Florida mangrove dieback on a decadal and centennial timescales.

Hurricanes are considered some of the most devastating weather phenomena, causing deaths and destruction along the coast. Mangroves are perceived as natural defenses against coastal hazards. However, mangrove gaps, known as mangrove dieback, have occurred in southwestern Florida. This study implemented a spatial-temporal analysis based on satellite, lidar and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images collected along the southwestern Florida coast between Tampa and Naples from 1994 to 2020 CE, and multi-proxy analyses on sediment cores sampled from two mangrove dieback sites to determine the cause(s

Seasonal variation of volatilized tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene concentrations in sewer systems in contaminated coastal landscapes.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) are commonly detected in urban environments with legacy contamination. Pathways of indoor VOC exposure through sewer infrastructure remain underexplored, particularly in the context of rising groundwater driven by seasonal rainfall and climate change in coastal settings. This study investigates how seasonal groundwater fluctuations influence VOC concentrations in sewers in the San Francisco Bay Area at a site characterized by shallow, unconfined groundwater and vulnerable sewer infrastructure in a setti

Methylmercury contamination in Mediterranean seafood: Exposure assessment and cost of illness implications.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a widespread contaminant that bioaccumulates in marine food webs, including those in the Mediterranean sea. It poses serious health risks, especially to developing infants and children, where exposure can cause neurological damage and developmental delays. In addition to health concerns, high MeHg levels in seafood can lead to economic losses through cognitive impairments that reduce productivity. Despite seafood being a dietary staple in Mediterranean countries, the full extent of MeHg's health and economic impacts remains underexplored, especially with the rising inte

Chemotherapy-based control of schistosomiasis haematobia. 3. Snail studies monitoring the effect of chemotherapy on transmission in the Msambweni area, Kenya.

Regular snail sampling was performed at 40 sites, representing the principal snail habitats, during a 4 year chemotherapy programme targetted at school-children in the Msambweni area of the coastal plain of Kenya. Populations of Bulinus africanus group snails, primarily from pools, showed seasonal variations, dropping when sites dried out and rising when they were refilled by the rains. Transmission, judged by the recovery of snails shedding typical fucocercous cercariae, continued throughout the treatment period at very low levels (less than 1% of the snails collected were infected) with peak

Mercury exposure of tidal marsh songbirds in the northeastern United States and its association with nest survival.

The biogeochemistry of tidal marsh sediments facilitates the transformation of mercury (Hg) into the biologically available form methylmercury (MeHg), resulting in elevated Hg exposures to tidal marsh wildlife. Saltmarsh and Acadian Nelson's sparrows (Ammospiza caudacutua and A. nelsoni subvirgatus, respectively) exclusively inhabit tidal marshes, potentially experiencing elevated risk to Hg exposure, and have experienced range-wide population declines. To characterize spatial and temporal variation of Hg exposure in these species, we sampled total mercury (THg) in blood collected from 9 popul

[Health effects of climatic changes--possible consequences for Norway].

In the year 2100 a global mean temperature increase of 2 degrees C, and a 50 cm rise in sea level are expected. An escalation in the intensity and duration of heat waves will increase mortality, whilst higher temperatures in cold regions may reduce it. On a global scale, vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, yellow fever and some types of viral encephalitis are likely to increase. 50 to 80 million more cases of malaria could occur annually. Elevated temperatures and more frequent floods could cause an increase in salmonellosis, cholera and giardiasis. Indirectly, shortages of freshwat

Coastal vulnerability to extreme weather events: An integrated analysis of erosion, sediment movement, and land subsidence based on multi-temporal optical and SAR satellite data.

Coastal areas undergo continuous transformations, altering their geometry under the influence of external forces like tides, waves, and extreme events. Thus, monitoring the impact of extreme weather events on coastal regions is crucial to prevent potential cascading hazards. Here, we utilized time-series optical and SAR satellite data and tide records, coupled with sophisticated analytical techniques, to analyze erosion processes, sediment transport, and vertical land movement (VLM) at an embayed sandy beach (i.e., Haeundae Beach, South Korea). We found a significant erosion rate of -4.12 m/ye

Nature-based Solutions as Building Blocks for coastal flood risk reduction: a model-based ecosystem service assessment.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognized as effective measures for mitigating flood risks and enhancing climate change adaptation. However, evaluating their efficacy in delivering flood risk reduction ecosystem service (FRR-ESS) is usually limited by reliance on qualitative, expert-based "quick-scan" scoring methods. While already challenging for present-day evaluations, this limitation becomes even more significant when addressing future climate scenarios, introducing deep uncertainties in the evaluation. The present study introduces a model-based framework to quantify FRR-ESS

The Influence of Seawater on Fe(II)-Catalyzed Ferrihydrite Transformation and Its Subsequent Consequences for C Dynamics.

Short-range-ordered minerals like ferrihydrite often bind substantial organic carbon (OC), which can be altered if the minerals transform. Such mineral transformations can be catalyzed by aqueous Fe(II) (Fe(II)aq) in redox-dynamic environments like coastal wetlands, which are inundated with seawater during storm surges or tidal events associated with sea-level rise. Yet, it is unknown how seawater salinity will impact Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation or the fate of bound OC. We reacted ferrihydrite with Fe(II)aq under anoxic conditions in the absence and presence of dissolved organ

The Potential Impact of Climate Change on the Micronutrient-Rich Food Supply.

Micronutrient deficiencies are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries worldwide. Climate change, characterized by increasing global surface temperatures and alterations in rainfall, has the capacity to affect the quality and accessibility of micronutrient-rich foods. The goals of this review are to summarize the potential effects of climate change and its consequences on agricultural yield and micronutrient quality, primarily zinc, iron, and vitamin A, of plant foods and upon the availability of animal foods, to discuss the implications for micronutrient d

Decay of Enterococcus faecalis, Vibrio cholerae and MS2 Coliphage in a Laboratory Mesocosm Under Brackish Beach Conditions.

Enterococci are fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) used for monitoring the microbial quality of bathing water. However, the reliability of health protection by monitoring FIB is questioned. This study evaluated the decay pattern of Enterococcus faecalis in beach environment and compared it with decay patterns of the pathogen Vibrio cholerae and the virus indicator MS2 coliphage. Tests were done in an experimental mesocosm simulating natural Nordic summer daylight conditions with and without the aquatic plant Myriophyllum sibiricum.
