In vitro and in vivo antimalarial activity of green synthesized silver nanoparticles using Sargassum tenerrimum - a marine seaweed.

Green nanotechnology has recently attracted a lot of attention as a potential technique for drug development. In the present study, silver nanoparticles were synthesised by using Sargassum tenerrimum, a marine seaweed crude extract (Ag-ST), and evaluated for antimalarial activity in both in vitro and in vivo models. The results showed that Ag-ST nanoparticles exhibited good antiplasmodial activity with IC50 values 7.71±0.39 µg/ml and 23.93±2.27 µg/ml against P. falciparum and P. berghei respectively. These nanoparticles also showed less haemolysis activity suggesting their possible use in ther…

Unravelling the multi-scale structural organisation of in vivo ileal digesta from diets containing protein-seaweed polysaccharide blends.

Seaweed-derived polysaccharides such as agar, alginate, carrageenan, and cellulose are increasingly used as functional ingredients in food products, yet their influence on the gastrointestinal digestion process remains poorly understood. This study investigated how different fibres modulate the digestion and nanoassembly process of two model food proteins, casein and whey protein isolate, under physiologically relevant conditions using an in vivo pig model. Ileal digesta were analysed through compositional, rheological, microstructural, and nanostructural characterisation. The results demonstr…

The Pacific seaweed pipefish Syngnathus schlegeli exhibits exceptionally high levels of polygynandry among fishes with paternal egg care.

Syngnathid fishes (family Syngnathidae), characterised by male pregnancy via a brood pouch, provide an exceptional model system for studying the relationship between mating systems and sexual selection, as they display extraordinary diversity in both mating systems and sex roles within a single family. A previous study reported that the population of Pacific seaweed pipefish Syngnathus schlegeli around Zhaitang Island in China has a polygamous mating system but did not investigate whether females also mate with multiple partners. In this study, we used parentage analyses with eight microsatell…

In vitro antiviral activity against Zika virus from a natural product of the Brazilian red seaweed Bryothamnion triquetrum.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arthropod-borne flavivirus that reemerged in 2007 and, since then, has caused several outbreaks and spread to over 80 countries worldwide. Along with this, ZIKV infections have been associated with severe clinical outcomes, including neurological manifestations, especially in newborns, posing a major threat to human health. However, there are no licensed vaccines or specific antiviral agents available yet; thereby, there is an urgent need for the discovery of novel therapeutic strategies to fight this infection. In this context, seaweeds are proven sources of biological…

Cryptic effects of habitat declines: coral-associated fishes avoid coral-seaweed interactions due to visual and chemical cues.

Seaweed-dominated coral reefs are becoming increasingly common as environmental conditions shift away from those required by corals and toward those ideal for rampant seaweed growth. How coral-associated organisms respond to seaweed will not only impact their fate following environmental change but potentially also the trajectories of the coral communities on which they rely. However, behavioral responses by coral-associated organisms to seaweeds are poorly understood. This study examined interactions between a guild of obligate and opportunistic coral-feeding butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae) …

Bioaccumulation and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Seaweeds from the Gulf of Mannar, Southeast Coast of India.

Heavy metals are among the most prevalent pollutants in marine environments. Seaweeds, widely consumed as a coastal superfood, can accumulate these contaminants from anthropogenic inputs. In this study, 15 seaweed species from the Gulf of Mannar, Southeast coast of India, were analysed for four toxic metals to evaluate their bioaccumulation potential and associated human health risks. The results revealed that the green algae concentrated Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd, brown seaweed mainly concentrated Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd, and red seaweed showed Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd, respectively. In green seaweeds, Cd (0.88-1…

The effects of temperature and CO2 enrichment on the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis from Southern California with implications for aquaculture.

The red alga Asparagopsis taxiformis has recently been recognized for its unique ability to significantly reduce methane emissions from ruminant animals when fed in small quantities. The main obstacle in using this seaweed as a methane-mitigating feed supplement is the lack of commercially available biomass. Little is known about how best to grow this red alga on a commercial scale, as there are few published studies that have investigated the factors that influence growth, physiology, and overall performance. This study examined the effects of temperature and CO2 enrichment on the growth, pho…
