Self-concept and body image in persons who are spinal cord injured with and without lower limb amputation.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) requires considerable psychological adjustment to physical limitations and complications. One particularly severe complication of SCI is foot skin breakdown, which can result in lower limb amputation. Relative to SCI adjustment, amputation may produce one of two psychological outcomes: (a.) the fragile self-concept of a person with SCI may be reduced further by limb amputation, or (b.) amputation of a diseased, nonfunctional limb may be associated with restored health and improved self-concept. To better understand the effects of amputation, 26 males with SCI, 11 of wh

The Self-Concept and Identity Measure in Patients with Personality Disorders: A Psychometric Evaluation and Associations With Identity Processes, Core Domains of Self-Functioning, and Personality Disorder Symptoms.

As developmental and clinical research on identity has largely developed in disconnect, scholars recommend adopting a developmental psychopathology perspective on identity, which considers adaptive and pathological identity functioning. Such a perspective has also been introduced in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), which suggests that all personality disorders (PDs) are marked by moderate to extreme deficits in self-functioning (i.e., identity and self-direction). The present study aims to validate th

Exploring Proof of Concept for a Novel Web-Based Self-Management Support Intervention for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Multimethod Study.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common chronic hormonal condition affecting 8%-13% of women and individuals assigned female at birth. Symptoms may include subfertility, menstrual, skin, and metabolic problems, with long-term health risks including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. PCOS has a significant negative impact on mental health, quality of life, and well-being. We explored proof of concept for a web-based self-management support intervention, "Hope PCOS," designed to reduce anxiety and depression and increase positive well-being for women living with PCOS. From childhood psychological maltreatment to fear of happiness: the parallel mediating roles of self-concept clarity and executive function.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common belief that every human being pursues happiness, current evidence challenges this belief with the concept of fear of happiness. Growing literature has examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and fear of happiness, but has not yet provided sufficient evidence on how this relationship occurs. Therefore, the present study aimed to address this gap in the literature by examining the mediating roles of self-concept clarity and executive function deficits in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment (CPM) and fear of happines

The link between the gender role self-concept and psychobiological stress in everyday life: an ecological momentary assessment study.

This study examined how trait and state aspects of the gender role self-concept (GSC), beyond biological sex assigned at birth, are associated with psychobiological stress in daily life. We hypothesized that higher agency (self-assertive traits, historically associated with male gender stereotypes) would relate to lower subjective stress and stressor exposure, whereas higher communion (interpersonally oriented traits, historically associated with female gender stereotypes) would show the opposite pattern. Associations with salivary cortisol (sCort) were also investigated. Eighty-two healthy ad

The Impact of Perceived Teacher Support on Reading Literacy: The Mediating Roles of Reading Self-Concept and Reading Engagement.

To date, limited research has systematically explored the interconnections between perceived teacher support, self-concept, engagement, and academic achievement specifically regarding the reading domain. Most previous studies have been conducted in Western cultures, making it difficult to extrapolate the findings to Eastern cultures, such as China. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between perceived teacher support, reading self-concept, reading engagement, and reading literacy in a Chinese educational context. A structural equation modeling analysis was conducted using 12,05

Intrapersonal dynamics of closeness versus distance: Qualities of the self-concept distinguish destructive overdependence, dysfunctional detachment, and healthy dependency.

INTRODUCTION: People vary in the degree to which they affiliate with others; exaggerated efforts maintain interpersonal closeness versus distance are codified in longstanding categorical models of personality pathology, and in contemporary dimensional frameworks as well. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between destructive overdependence (DO), dysfuntional detachment (DD), and healthy dependency (HD) and qualities of the self-concept. METHOD: A mixed-sex sample of 229 adults completed the Relationship Profile Test to assess DO, DD, and HD, and the Object Relations Inventory (ORI) to assess

Internalized stigma and self-stigma in people diagnosed with a mental disorder. One concept or two? A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In the literature on stigma, authors often use self-stigma or internalized stigma interchangeably to refer to this type of stigma. This results in a lack of conceptual clarity with negative repercussions for measurement and intervention. AIMS: To identify how internalized stigma and self-stigma are conceptualized in people diagnosed with a mental disorder and establish similarities and differences between both concepts. METHOD: A scoping review was conducted. Thirty-five studies that conceptualized internalized stigma or self-stigma were selected. RESULTS: It was identified that

Mediating role of self-concept on character strengths and well-being among adolescents with specific learning disorder in India.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) are at higher risk of academic underachievement, stigmatization, and mental health issues. However, the complete elimination of disorder-related deficits and external challenges is an impracticable solution for enhancing their well-being. AIM: The study adopts a strength-based approach to understand the role of an innate factor, i.e., self-concept, in the association between character strengths and well-being of adolescents with SLD. METHODS: A correlational research design following a mediation analysis was adopted to examine the

Intergenerational Transmission of Depression during Adolescence: The Mediating Roles of Hostile Attribution Bias, Empathic Concern, and Social Self-Concept.

Few studies have empirically examined the role of peer microsystem in the intergenerational transmission of depression, and more importantly, little is known about the mechanisms underlying this potential pathway of intergenerational transmission. The purpose of the current study was to examine the sequential mediation effects of adolescent hostile attribution bias, empathic concern, and social self-concept on the association between maternal depression and adolescent depression. An urban Chinese sample of 761 mother-child dyads was investigated when the adolescents were in secondary school (M

Interpersonal Victimization, Substance Use, and Mental Health Among Sexual and Gender Minority Youth: The Role of Self-concept Factors.

Reducing substance use and negative mental health outcomes of interpersonal victimization among sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) represents a critical public health priority. Victimized individuals often develop cognitive schemas, or organized knowledge structures consisting of traits, values, and memories about the self, such as self-concept factors, in response to interpersonal victimization. Prior studies demonstrate the role of self-concept factors (e.g., mastery, control, and self-esteem) in explaining the relationship between victimization and substance use and mental health. Howe

Quality of life, academic self-concept, and mental health in children with epilepsy: The possible role of epilepsy comorbidities.

PURPOSE: Epilepsy in children is often associated with impaired quality of life, lower academic achievement, and reduced academic self-concept, as well as an increased risk of depression and anxiety. This study aims to evaluate the possible impact of comorbidities, such as learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), on these variables. METHODS: A total of 104 children with epilepsy (CWE) aged 8-15 years, attending mainstream schools, participated in the study. Of these, 45 were diagnosed with LD and/or ADHD. Participants completed the CHEQOL-25 questionnair

Positive Side-Effects of Psychotherapy: The Influence of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy on Self-Concept in Patients With Panic Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Past studies show a strong association of the self-concept (SC) and symptom burden for many mental disorders including anxiety disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for anxiety disorders that has also been shown to improve SC in patients suffering from such. However, whilst CBT has been shown to be an effective intervention for treating panic disorder (PD), the effects of CBT on SC in patients with PD as well as the predictive role of SC for therapy outcome in these patients remain unclear. This is hence the first study investigating the effec

Dimensions of sexual self-concept and sexual dysfunctions in middle-aged men: results of the Bavarian Men's Health-Study.

Sexual self-concept is multidimensional and a key construct in understanding people's sexuality. The etiology as well as the relationship and causal direction between its different dimensions and sexual dysfunctions are not fully understood. A population-based cohort (N = 5665) of 50-year-old men completed questionnaires on dimensions of sexual self-concept (toughness, body image, sexual self-esteem, and perceived pressure with regard to sexuality) and sexual dysfunctions. Associations were assessed using multivariable linear regression analyses. Erectile dysfunction (ED), lifelong/acquired an

Cryptocurrency Trading, Day Trading, and Gambling Behavior: Examining the Moderating Effects of Financially Focused Self-Concept and Gambling Motives.

Cryptocurrency and day trading have grown in popularity over the past decade following the creation of the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, in 2009. These activities share important features with gambling, including risking money on an uncertain outcome, a chance of monetary rewards, and the potential to experience harm (e.g., financial or relationship problems). However, little is known about cryptocurrency and day trading engagement in the adult population, including associations with gambling behavior, harm, and psychological factors that might moderate these relationships. We analyzed cross-

Reciprocal self-disclosure makes children feel more loved by their parents in the moment: A proof-of-concept experiment.

Feeling loved by one's parents is critical for children's health and well-being. How can such feelings be fostered? A vital feature of loving interactions is reciprocal self-disclosure, where individuals disclose intimate information about themselves. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we examined whether encouraging reciprocal self-disclosure in parent-child dyads would make children feel more loved during the conversation. Participants were 218 children (ages 8-13, 50% girls, 94% Dutch) and one of their parents (ages 28-56, 62% women, 90% Dutch). Parent-child dyads received a list of 14 quest
