Feasibility, Acceptability and Preliminary Efficacy of Tikambisane ('Let's Talk to Each Other'): A Pilot Support Group Intervention for Adolescent Girls Living With HIV in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: In Zambia, 84,959 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 are currently living with HIV. We explored the feasibility and acceptability of a 6-session, curriculum-based support group intervention designed to address key concerns of AGYW living with HIV. SETTING: Urban Zambia. METHODS: Surveys and in-depth interviews were collected pre- and post-intervention from participants enrolled from 2 health facilities. Eight participant observations of sessions were conducted. Descriptive statistics at baseline were reported only for AGYW who participated in the intervention (N =

A booklet self-help intervention to reduce depressive symptoms among people living with HIV in Botswana: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of mental health issues among people living with HIV (PLH) in Botswana is yet to be addressed. A recent study revealed that depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in a sample of PLH in Botswana. Based on empirical findings of a study that investigated intervention targets for PLH in Botswana, a self-help program with coaching in booklet format in the Setswana and English languages was developed, composed of cognitive behavioral techniques, coping skills interventions, and goal adjustment training. We will investigate the program for effectiveness in the treatment of

Overcoming Addictions, a Web-Based Application, and SMART Recovery, an Online and In-Person Mutual Help Group for Problem Drinkers, Part 2: Six-Month Outcomes of a Randomized Controlled Trial and Qualitative Feedback From Participants.

BACKGROUND: Despite empirical evidence supporting the use of Web-based interventions for problem drinking, much remains unknown about factors that influence their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the performance of 2 resources for people who want to achieve and maintain abstinence: SMART Recovery (SR) and Overcoming Addictions (OA). OA is a Web application based on SR. We also examined participant and intervention-related factors hypothesized to impact clinical outcomes of Web-based interventions. METHODS: We recruited 189 heavy drinkers through SR's website and in-person meetings thro

A critical review of treatment approaches for gambling disorders.

This review presents the theoretical model, evidence base, and theoretical and methodological issues for seven treatment approaches to gambling disorders: 1) psychoanalytic and psychodynamic treatments, 2) Gamblers Anonymous, 3) behavioural treatments, 4) cognitive and cognitive-behavioural therapies, 5) brief, motivational, and self-directed interventions, 6) pharmacotherapies, and 7) family therapy approaches. Throughout the review, broader clinical and research issues are also discussed, including barriers to treatment-seeking, controlled gambling versus abstinence as a treatment goal, como

[Care and social treatment for parent(s) and children with Asperger syndrome].

This paper describes the care and social treatment for parent(s) and child with Asperger syndrome. The children with Asperger syndrome are not easily distinguished from children without Asperger syndrome. The diagnosis can be varied depending on perspectives. They are more likely to receive inappropriate intervention due to lack of understanding. They are more likely to develop emotional and conduct problems secondarily. Because their disorders cannot be seen clearly, their difficulties are not identified. It seems that parent(s) and child with Asperger syndrome are hurt by this problem. It is

Treatments such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, group and family therapies and self-help groups are just as effective for older adults as they are for other age groups. Guided self-help of bulimia nervosa in a specialist setting: a pilot study.

Seventeen patients meeting the DSM-IV criteria for bulimia nervosa were treated in a specialist setting according to the "guided self-help" approach as outlined in the self-help handbook "Overcoming Binge Eating" by Fairburn. This self-help manual is essentially a condensed version of the cognitive-behavioural therapy for bulimia nervosa developed by the same author. Every patient took part in 8 bimonthly sessions each lasting 20 minutes. All subjects were evaluated both before and after the treatment through a semi-structured interview. Overall, 10 patients (58.8%) did well; 6 of these 10 pat

[Mucopolysaccharidoses from the view point of mucopolysaccharidoses families--10 years' experiences of the "Austrian Society for Mucopolysaccharidoses"].

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are rare inborn errors of metabolism. They are caused by defects in enzymes which are necessary for the degradation of mucopolysaccharides. An effective causal treatment is not available as yet. Nevertheless, it is the duty of the doctor, both from the medical and human aspect to assist MPS patients and their families physically and psychologically over many years. This task needs much empathy, working morale and knowledge of these diseases on the part of the medical adviser involved, but also demonstrates the limitations of active medical treatment. Since 10 ye

Haematological patients transferred to the intensive care unit: what ICU nurses need to know.

This article will consider the nursing care and treatment required by haematology patients when transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU). Background information on types of haematological malignancies, treatment for and survival from these diseases will be presented. This will be followed by considering some of the complications that may lead to admission to ICU including tumour lysis syndrome, infections, disseminated intravascular coagulation and haemorrhage and the side-effects of treatment itself. Specialist needs of these patients when in an ICU will be addressed and the patients' expe

Laryngectomy rehabilitation: a woman's viewpoint.

A laryngectomy can be a traumatic operation, emotionally as well as physically. A female laryngectomee describes the emotional and physical problems that women face following this operation, especially in dealing with the complete and permanent loss of speech, and in managing a disfiguring stoma in the neck area. Support of family and friends, assistance of an experienced speech pathologist, and guidance from other caring health professionals all play a vital role in helping the laryngectomee master esophageal speech and begin once again to lead a full, productive life.

How sustainable are self-help interventions in the post-funding period? Qualitative findings from integrated leprosy communities in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Time-limited, externally funded self-help groups (receiving training, equipment and access to seeds) are typically evaluated during the funding period. However, their sustainability beyond this phase remains understudied. METHODS: This retrospective qualitative study explored the post-funding sustainability of two 6-y self-help interventions (2013-2019) for groups in integrated leprosy communities in central Nigeria. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 stakeholders (beneficiaries, implementers and funders) and supplemented by document analysis. RESULTS: Findings rev…

Drug treatment perspectives and experiences among family and friends of people who use illicit opioids: A mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is key to reducing opioid-related morbidity and mortality. Family and close friends of people with OUD can play an important role in motivating and facilitating their loved ones' treatment. We examined evolving knowledge about OUD and its treatment among family and close friends of people who use illicit opioids and their experiences navigating the treatment system. METHODS: Eligible individuals were Massachusetts residents, ≥18 years of age, did not use illicit opioids in the past 30 days, and had a close relatio

Demographic and Indication-Specific Characteristics Have Limited Association With Social Network Engagement: Evidence From 24,954 Members of Four Health Care Support Groups.

BACKGROUND: Digital health social networks (DHSNs) are widespread, and the consensus is that they contribute to wellness by offering social support and knowledge sharing. The success of a DHSN is based on the number of participants and their consistent creation of externalities through the generation of new content. To promote network growth, it would be helpful to identify characteristics of superusers or actors who create value by generating positive network externalities. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of developing predictive models that identify potent
